A handy telephoto lens with a wide f-stop is a nature & wild life photographer’s dream come true. Specially when shooting feathered friends perched up in the trees surrounded by leaves in a tricky lighting condition. A wide f-stop such as that provided by the EF 200mm f/2.8 L II USM lens is much appreciated. Having said that, however, the lens is also suitable for fast action and sports photography. Considering the versatility of zoom & IS both the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM or EF 70-200f/2.8L IS II USM lenses are better choices.
The construction of the EF 200mm f/2.8 L II USM lens consists of 9 elements including two UD (Ultra-Low Dispersion) glass elements and is arranged in 7 groups. The lens features Canon’s USM (Ultra-Sound Motor) technology which basically means the lens is quiet when focusing, making it ideal for a nature & wild life photographer. Additionally the presence of Rear focusing elements means the lens never extends when focusing making it discreet.
The diagonal angle of view of the lens is 12°. Even for a lens of this long focal length range it has a close focusing distance of only 4.9 feet or 1.5 meters giving it a maximum magnification ratio of 1:6.25. This makes the lens somewhat suitable for the purpose of close-up photography. The diaphragm of the lens consists of 8 blades with the maximum aperture of f/2.8. The lens can stop all the way down to f/32. The wide aperture provides excellent bokeh in your shots. The overall external dimensions of the lens are 3.3″ x 5.4″ and the weight is 765 grams. It takes a filter of 72mm.Also have a look at Canon EF 200mm f/2L IS USM.
