Overview
The EF 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6 L IS USM is a very versatile lens. It has a stunning focal length range of 28-300mm covering everything from a very wide perspective to telephoto. At 28mm the lens is however not as fast as a prime lens would be so users looking for something faster would be disappointed. However the lens is designed more for its versatility over a longer focal length range.
Canon has provided its Image Stabilization (IS) system in the lens which makes it steady at up to three stops slower shutter speed than in the non IS versions. They have also incorporated the IS 2 mode which ensures that the lens can detect when there is a conscious panning movement and immediately disengages the stabilization system.
Full-time manual focusing ensures that the photographer can precisely adjust the focusing by simply turning the focusing ring. There is also a focusing mode change switch, which when flicked changes the focusing from auto to manual and vice-versa.
The lens has a total of 22 elements arranged in 16 groups. The diaphragm of the lens is made up of 8 rounded type bladed which gives it a maximum aperture of f/3.5. It can also shot down to f/22-38.
The overall construction of the lens is very good. Being an L series lens this has weather sealing which comes handy when being used out in the field.
