The EF 85mm f/1.8 USM is a cheaper alternative to the pricier and bulkier EF 85mm f/1.2 L II USM lens. If you’re looking for a low budget and usable 85mm prime for your full frame Canon, the EF 85mm f/1.8 USM is one of the best lenses that you can lay your hands on. If you’re using a 1.6x crop Canon DSLR such as a 7D or a Rebel T4i, this lens will give you the 35mm equivalent field of view as a 138mm lens.
The lens construction is composed of 9 elements arranged in 7 groups. The lens features Canon’s USM (ultra-sonic motor) technology which evidently makes the lens very quiet. 8 blades make up the lens diaphragm which gives it a wide aperture of f/1.8. It can additionally stop down to f/22. The closest focusing distance of the lens is 2.8’ (or 0.85 meter). The lens has internal focusing elements which means during focusing the lens length does not extend. Auto focusing performance is very good as expected. The lens bokeh (soft background/foreground) is also great. Also it has reduced issues with color fringing, allowing even 100% crops at f/2.8 or f/4 to be usable.
The overall lens construction feels plasticky. This is not a L series and does not have many of the refinements that one come to expect from that series, but still this lens gets the job done and at a cheaper price too. As such this lens should appeal to a APS-C user looking for a fast medium tele-lens. The overall dimensions of the lens are 3.0″ x 2.8″ and it weighs 425 grams. The filter size specification is 58mm.
