Overview
Designed for the crop 1.6x Canon DSLRs the EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM lens covers a very interesting focal length range of 15-85mm (equivalent to a 24-135mm on a 35mm camera). This practically makes the lens an all purpose one for most everyday shooting needs, unless you need to shoot something at 100 meters or more and resultantly need a longer focal length. it has a total of 17 lens elements, including 1 UD glass and 3 aspherical elements, arranged in 12 groups. The diaphragm of the lens is made up of 7 blades.
The lens comes with Canon’s IS (Image stabilization technology) which allows up to four stops slower shutter speed even when the camera is hand held. It also has a close focusing distance 1.15’ (0.35 meters) with a maximum reproduction ratio of 1:4.8.
This lens has FTM which means you will probably never have to switch to manual focusing again. To focus precisely, all you need to do is to let the lens auto-focus and then simply turn the focusing ring to fine tune it. No need to flick any switch for the ‘switchover’. During zooming the lens barrel does not rotate, however the barrel does extend and contract which means this is not exactly a discreet lens.
Overall build quality of the lens is good. It is almost entirely built out of plastic. The dimensions of the lens are 3.2″ x 3.4″ and the weight is 575 grams. It has a filter thread specification of 72mm. Available at Amazon | Adorama | B&H
