Overview
The EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS is a wide angle medium tele zoom that is designed for smaller 1.6x crop Canon DSLRs. It is compatible with the rebel series as well as the semi-pro 60D and others. This lens however is not compatible with any of the pro 35mm DSLRs or the APS-H sensor cameras that Canon produces. Its focal length is equivalent to 28.8-216mm on a 35mm format equivalent camera.
The lens construction is almost entirely plastic. The barrel, the focusing ring, the fore barrel are all made out of plastic. The mount is chromed metal. The markings on the lens are painted. It has 16 elements arranged in 12 groups. 6 blades make up the lens diaphragm which allows it to have a wide f-stop of f/3.5 at 18mm. At 135mm (fully zoomed in) the lens has a wide f-stop of f/5.6. The lens can alternatively stop down to f/22 – f/36.
The EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS does not have a manual focus override (FTM). Instead there is an AF/MF switch. Flick it and you should be able to now manually lock focus. The closest focusing distance that the lens has is 1.5’ (or 0.45 meters). The front elements of the lens moves during focusing however due to internal focusing technology they never rotate. The diagonal angle of view of the lens is 74° 20′ – 11° 30′.
