The AF VR Zoom-Nikkor 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6D ED lens is a superzoom tele lens with 5x optical zoom range. The AF VR Zoom-Nikkor 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6D ED is a compact design ideal for wildlife and other photojournalistic requirements. Recently replaced by a newer version the Nikon AF-S Nikkor 80-400mm f:4.5-5.6G ED VR. It has a bright f/4.5 aperture when completely zoomed out. When zoomed in completely, the lens is an f/5.6 which is still good enough for a soft background blur for portraiture. This lens comes with Nikon’s optical image stabilization system VR which allows the user to decrease the shutter speed by up to three stops.
However there is a special feature provided which automatically detects when panning and switches off the VR. There is an option to switch off stabilization for the viewfinder which results in conservation of battery power.
Nikon has provided ED (Extra-low dispersion) elements in the lens to reduce color fringing and more saturation for a sharper image. Additionally there the A-M feature which allows easy transition from auto to manual focusing.
The lens has 17 elements arranged in 11 groups containing 3 ED glass elements. The closest focusing distance of the lens is 2.3 meters (7.5’). 9 rounded blade makes up the diaphragm. The lens has a filter size specification of 77mm. the diameter x length measurement is 91 x 171 mm (or 3.6 x 6.7”). The overall weight of the lens is 1360 grams.
