The AF Nikkor 85mm f/1.8D is a great choice if you’re looking for an affordable 85mm prime. It is fast with a maximum aperture of f/1.8 and has great low light performance. Additionally Nikon has provided Super Integrated Coating (SIC) technology that ensures that the flares and ghosts are suppressed. Rear Focusing is also provided which means only the rear elements of the lens moves during auto-focusing leaving the barrel length unchanged.
This FX format lens is compatible with all Nikon FX DSLRs, all the latest DX format and other film cameras by Nikon. With the cheapest DX cameras such as the Nikon D3100 or the D5100, however, auto-focusing will not work, so it is best to check the compatibility issues, if you’re planning to buy this lens for your DX Nikon DSLR.
The lens has a maximum angle of view of 18°50′ on a DX format lens and a maximum angle of view of 28°30′ on a FX format lens. A total of 6 lens elements arranged in 6 groups make up the constructions. The diaphragm is made of 9 straight blades with a maximum aperture of f/1.8. It can stop down all the way to f/16. The minimum focusing distance is 2.8’ (0.85 meters). The AF Nikkor 85mm f/1.8D uses a 62mm filter size and its dimensions are 2.8×2.3” (diameter x length). The weight of the lens is a reasonable 380 grams.
