Overview
The best thing about the Sigma 50-150mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM is its demure size which makes it one of the smallest and easy to carry 3x optical zoom lenses from Sigma. This 7.8 inches long 50-150mm f/2.8 lens is designed for APS-C DSLRs only and gives a equivalent field of view of a 75-225mm lens mounted on a 35mm body. It features Sigma’s HSM (Hyper-sonic Motor) technology (comparable with that of Canon’s USM. It is very quiet during auto-focusing ensuring its suitability to wild-life photography. The lens comes with four stops of image shake correction.
Lens construction is very good. There are a total of 6 SLD (super low dispersion) glass elements which ensures that chromatic aberrations (color fringing) are suppressed. Over all there are 21 elements arranged in 15 groups. Sigma has also provided its Super multi-layer coating to ensure reduced flares and ghosts. Three features of the lens are really good for professional photographers. First is the inner focusing & zooming elements which means the lens does not extend when focusing or zooming. The next is the HSM (Hyper-sonic Motor) technology and third is the full time manual focusing. This manual focus override allows the user to turn the manual focusing ring to adjust the focus precisely without needing to flick the focus mode switch.
The lens diaphragm is constructed of 9 rounded blades which gives it the maximum f-stop of f/2.8. It can also stop down to f/22.
