Overview
Made for the true wildlife photographer or sports/action photographer, the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS USM lens has a fast f/4 aperture great optical zoom ratio of 4x (100mm-400mm) and has both the ring-type USM (Ultra-sonic motor) and IS (image stabilization) technology. Canon has provided both fluorite and Super-UD (Ultra-Low Dispersion) elements in the lens which ensures that the lens has great suppression of lens flairs when shooting wide and color fringing when shooting fully zoomed in.
The image stabilization feature of the lens is very good. Being a L series lens the overall performance is excellent. The lens will automatically disengage the IS when mounted on a tripod. There are overall two IS modes in the lens. Overall chromatic aberration is well controlled although some of it is noticed at when the lens is used fully zoomed in on a APS-C Canon DSLR. Additionally some amount of vignetting is noticed when used on a full frame DSLR fully zoomed in. stopping down corrects this problem. APS-C users may also notice the same when shooting at f/5.6. Canon has provided its ring-type USM technology in the lens. This makes it very fast and very quiet when focusing something that wild-life photographers would love.
Overall the lens has 17 lens elements arranged in 14 groups. Rear focusing elements means the lens barrel never extend when focusing or zooming.
