A soft-focus lens is one that creates a blurred image but at the same time the edges of the image still remain in sharp focus. This is inherently a limitation of the optics of the lens and was a common factor back in the old days. When photographers started using them creatively, lenses such as the EF 135mm f/2.8 with soft focus started to get in demand. Lenses such as this one are now used by specialist soft-focus photography enthusiasts.
The EF 135mm f/2.8 can be used also as a normal 135mm f/2.8 lens which should be ideal for photographers looking for a medium range telephoto at an affordable price. There are built-in options for the two settings. This gives the lens a lot of flexibility. The EF 135mm f/2L USM is almost double the price of the EF 135mm f/2.8 (Soft Focus).
The lens construction has 7 elements arranged in 6 groups and has a minimum focusing distance of 1.3 meters or 4.3’. Certainly the lack of closeness of the minimum focusing distance rules out it being a preferred choice for macro photography. Presence of rear focusing system means the lens does not extend when focused. The diagonal angle of view of the lens is 18°.
The build quality of the lens leaves something to be desired. It is almost entirely build out of plastic except for the lens mount. The overall dimensions of the lens are 2.7″ x 3.9″ and it weighs 390 grams. It takes a filter of size 52mm.
