Overview
A longer focal length is often the preferred parameter for selecting a good macro lens. It suggests the maximum distance that you can stand and yet capture a 1:1 magnification ratio. More the focal length, more of the subject can be brought to focus by allowing a tighter shot and at the same time to enable getting rid of the unwanted background. A longer focal length such as that of the EF180mm f/3.5L Macro USM is ideally suitable when the photographer wants to bring into focus something which is very small and fill the entire frame with it. It is also suitable when the subject is easily scared and can run away at the sight of a long barrel approaching it. It is suitable for subjects such as bees, flies, ants and even butterflies which make for some of the most popular and yet difficult subjects to capture and fill a frame. Compared to that something such as the EF50mm f/2.5 Compact Macro is ideal when you don’t have a lot of room to work around and you need to get closer.
Capture the small things into full-sized view with the Canon EF 180mm macro USM lens. The 180mm lens features three UD glass elements and an internal floating system, an advanced ultra-sonic monitor (USM) for high-speed, quiet autofocusing; full-time mechanical manual focusing; and a minimum focusing distance range of 1.57 feet. Compatible with both the EF Extender 1.4x and 2x, the lens. Available at Amazon | Adorama | B&H
