Features
Canon lens line up currently has different version of this 400nn range. The EF 400mm f/4.0 DO IS USM features Canon’s multi-layer diffractive optical lens technology. Other two versions are cheaper EF 400mm f/5.6 L USM & expensive EF 400mm f/2.8 L IS II USM Lens. This lens was the first of its kind that featured this technology that launched in Photokina 2000. There are many advantages of this technology and one among them is the excellent chromatic aberration cancellation that is achieved in comparison to standard UD, Super-UD and fluorite based lens elements. It also reduces the density of the lens elements, reduces the over all length of the lenses and their bulk. For a super telephoto lens such as the EF 400mm f/4.0 DO IS USM the effect is quite evident. Additionally Canon has implemented Fluorite & UD elements in this lens making it possible to eliminate any ancillary chromatic aberration.
Canon has also provided IS (Image Stabilization) technology in the lens which makes it up to two stops equivalent of stabilized. The presence of FTM (Full Time Manual) focusing means the photographer can easily switch from Auto to Manual focusing at any time without having to flick a switch for the changeover. The lens also has inner focusing elements (fixed lens barrel length) and USM (ultra-sonic motor) for faster and quieter auto-focusing.
The overall construction of this $6469 lens is excellent. Magnesium alloy lens barrel prevents dust and dirt from getting inside the lens. This super telephoto lens comes with 17 elements arranged in 13 groups. The diagonal angle of view of the lens is 6° 10′. The external dimensions of the lens are 5.0″ x 9.2″ and the weight of the lens is 1940 grams. Available at Amazon | Adorama | B&H
