Features
The EF 50mm f/1.8 II is the cheapest 50mm standard prime lens offered by Canon. At $125 this is certainly a good lens for someone who is interested in candid street photography on a full frame or can even be used by a 1.6x crop camera like the 60D or the 650D for the purpose of medium range telephoto lens (80mm). The overall performance of the lens is very sharp.
The lens has no FTM (full-time manual focusing) option. There is a switch that needs to be flicked in order to move from auto to manual focusing. During auto-focusing however the manual focus ring turns as well.
The lens construction has a total of 6 elements arranged in 5 groups. Canon has provided multi coating for the elements. The diaphragm of the lens is built out of 5 straight blades which stop all the way down to f/22. The wide f/1.8 aperture gives excellent out of focus effects (bokeh) for your shots. If you’re worried about lend vignetting, then some of it is going to be present when shooting wide open. Stop down one or two and lens vignetting is greatly diminished.
The closest focusing distance of the lens is 1.5 feet (0.45 meters) and the maximum reproduction ratio is 1:6.7. The overall dimensions of the lens are 2.7″ x 1.6″ (diameter x length) and the weight is 130 grams making it the lightest 50mm prime that Canon currently has. The EF 50mm f/1.8 II takes a filter of 52mm specification. Also check EF 50mm f/1.4 and EF 50mm f/1.8 STM
This is a up and ready 50mm prime which should appeal to users who are interested in a standard prime for their everyday shooting needs.
