Overview
This EF-S lens is designed for smaller APS-C Canon DSLRs. They are not designed for the purpose of APS-H or the larger full frame 35mm cameras or even for film Canon cameras. The EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS lens has the same focal length range as an 88-400mm lens would have on a 35mm camera. It is one of the cheapest EF-S tele zooms that Canon offers to its discerning APS-C DSLR users.
The lens comes with Canon’s optical stabilization (IS) system. Being a tele lens of such high focal length, it is but imperative that the lens comes with some sort of image stabilization system and Canon does not disappoint with the claimed four stops slower shutter speeds that is possible with this lens while hand holding the camera. The focus adjustments of the lens are done using DC motor.
The EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS has a total of 12 elements including one UD glass element arranged in 10 groups. The presence of the UD glass elements ensures that the chromatic aberrations of the lens are greatly suppressed.
The circular diaphragm of the lens offers a maximum aperture of f/4 at 55mm and a maximum of f/5.6 at 250mm. The diagonal angle of view of the lens is 27° 50′- 6° 15′. In spite of being a tele lens it has a small focusing distance of only 3.6’ at all times. The external dimensions of the lens are 2.8” x 4.3”. The overall weight of the lens is 390 grams.
