Sony Introduces New Wi-Fi®, Waterproof and High-Zoom Cyber-shot Cameras with Intelligent Flash Performance, 360° Panoramic Shooting and more
LAS VEGAS (CES Booth #14200), Jan. 7, 2013 – Sony’s newest Cyber-shot compact cameras deliver a range of powerful, high-end capabilities at attractive prices, making it easier than ever for consumers to shoot and share all of their precious memories.
The five new models — WX80, W730, W710, TF1 and H200 cameras – share a variety of new features for the Cyber-shot line including a new Advanced Flash which boosts the cameras sensitivity and extends the effective range of the flash. This is especially useful in low-light situations like party shots, indoors or dusk where built-in flashes have historically struggled to reach far-away subjects and capture all important details of a scene.
Additionally, the new “Beauty Effect” feature gives users several post-shooting “re-touch” options including skin toning and smoothing, teeth whitening, eye widening and shine removal. Also, 360 Sweep Panorama mode, previously available on a few select Cyber-shot models, will now be offered throughout the entire line. This unique feature allows for seamless, detailed 360o panoramic shots.
Ultra-Compact W Series Cameras
The new Cyber-shot WX80 compact camera features a high-resolution 16.2 MP Exmor® R CMOS sensor, an 8x optical zoom lens with 16x Clear Image digital zoom and an enhanced Optical SteadyShot™ that minimizes camera shake for crisp, blur-free still images. Additionally, Superior Auto shooting mode has been improved to recognize and optimize settings in an even wider range of shooting situations including very low-light scenes and instances where a subject is in fast motion.
The new WX80 model is Wi-Fi® capable, allowing users to send images and video clips (MP4 only) wirelessly to a compatible smartphone or tablet through Sony’s PlayMemories™ Mobile application. Its Wi-Fi functionality also lets shooters use their connected phone to control basic camera functions including shutter release, zoom, flash mode and more. Images can be viewed wirelessly on a networked TV or PC as well.
The feature-packed WX80 camera is also compatible with TRILUMINOUS Color™, an expanded range of vivid, ultra-realistic colors that is available on select Sony BRAVIA TVs. Content shot with the camera, including still images and Full HD (1020X1080i) videos, can be experienced in these rich, natural colors when connected to compatible televisions.
The new W730 camera features a 16.1 MP Super HAD CCD sensor with an 8x optical zoom Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar lens. It has 720p HD movie shooting and Optical SteadyShot™ Active Mode.

Press Release
Valhalla, N.Y., January 7, 2013 – FUJIFILM North America Corporation announces the new flagship FinePix HS50EXR that features a manual zoom lens for high precision zooming over a huge 42x focal length range (24-1000mm*2) and a new ½” EXR CMOS II sensor with phase detection that achieves the world’s fastest autofocus speed in its class of just 0.05 seconds*1.
“The new HS50EXR bridge camera gives consumers a truly amazing autofocus speed of just 0.05 seconds and a wide range of shooting features in an all-in-one design that is more economical and easier to use than expensive and heavy DSLR kits,” said David Troy, director of marketing, Digital Cameras, Electronic Imaging Division, FUJIFILM North America Corporation. “With the HS50EXR, users can capture everything from beautiful wide angle landscape shots to sharp telephoto pictures with its powerful 42x zoom and Optical image Stabilization – no shot will be too far away again.”
New EXR CMOS II Sensor with Phase Detection for High Performance
The HS50EXR boasts the latest FUJIFILM EXR 16MP ½” EXR CMOS II sensor, as well as the EXR Processor II, which has faster processing speeds compared to the previous generation EXR processor.
The HS50EXR now includes built-in phase detection to achieve an incredibly fast autofocus speed of just 0.05 seconds in fastest conditions, along with a new Intelligent Hybrid Autofocus system that automatically selects between phase detection autofocus or contrast autofocus in low light to ensure the optimal focus system is used for sharp, vibrant images.
The new EXR CMOS II sensor and EXR Processor II make the HS50EXR a truly powerful camera when it comes to capturing moving objects. In addition to the 0.05 seconds autofocus speed*1, it also achieves a start-up time of 0.5 seconds*3, and interval time between shots of just 0.5*4 seconds. And by using the Continuous Shooting mode, the HS50EXR can shoot in burst mode of 11fps at the full 16MP resolution (up to 5 frames)*4 and seamless 5.5fps shooting at 8MP resolution. Combined, these technologies mean that you will never miss that crucial shot, no matter how fast your subject is moving.
The HS50EXR also uses a new Focus Peaking feature in manual focus mode to help photographers by highlighting high contrast areas of a subject and provides a guide for focusing in situations where it is difficult to tell whether the subject is correctly focused.
Manual 42x Optical Zoom Lens (24-1000mm*2)
The newly developed 42x FUJINON zoom lens in the HS50EXR offers the precision of a manual zoom and stunning optical performance for beautiful high resolution images. The HS50EXR can shoot Super Macro photography as close as 0.39” all the way through 24mm wide-angle up to 1000mm telephoto*2, a range that of focal lengths that would require several different lenses on a DSLR camera.
To ensure premium image quality, the HS50EXR lens uses aspherical, ED and cemented elements and achieves blur reduction with Optical Image Stabilization, over the entire aperture range of F2.8 to F5.6. The lens features 17 elements in total, 15 of which have FUJINON’s Super EBC coating on both sides to reduce ghosting and flare in challenging low light situations.
3.0” Variable Angle LCD Screen
The HS50EXR features a 920k dot, highly detailed electronic viewfinder (EVF) that is perfect for helping users frame a subject, even in bright sunlight. And for challenging low or high shots, the HS50EXR has a useful 3.0” variable-angle 920k dot LCD screen that folds out and flips around for easy viewing and shooting.
Full HD Movie 1080p/60fps with continuous phase detection AF and stereo sound
The HS50EXR with built in stereo microphone is now the ideal camera for the budding cinematographer. Thanks to the EXR CMOS II sensor, the HS50EXR is capable of full HD movie recording (1080p) at up to 60 frames per second. Connect an external microphone to the dedicated input and you can get amazing sound to rival the image quality. If you want to be more creative you can record lower resolution movies at up to 480 frames per second*5 – and capture some amazing slow motion action. The Phase Detection pixel technology and scene recognition modes also work while recording movies to ensure that your video stays sharply focused on the subject.
Artistic shooting effects
The HS50EXR features several Film Simulation Modes. Users can choose from ten different modes which simulate the effects of traditional Fujifilm films, including color reversal film effects (Velvia / PROVIA / ASTIA), as well as create Multiple Exposures by combining two separate subjects into one photo.
The HS50EXR also features Advanced Filter functions including:
- Pop Color – emphasizes contrast and color saturation
- Toy Camera – create shaded borders as if you were taking a photo on a toy camera
- Miniature – adds top and bottom blur for a diorama or miniature effect
- Dynamic Tone – create a fantasy effect by dynamically-modulated tonal reproduction
- Partial Color – retain one selected original color and change the rest of the photo to black and white
- High Key – enhance brightness and reduce contrast to lighten tonal reproduction
- Low Key – create uniformly dark tones with few areas of emphasized highlights
- Soft Focus – blur the focus of the image edges to create a softer effect

Overview
A recently launched prosumer compact from Fujifilm the X20 is a camera that is aimed at the photographer who takes his photography seriously yet does not quiet fancy carrying the weight of a DSLR around his neck. The retro design is very similar to what the X10 had. For someone who may already be having a DSLR the X20 is a second camera that he could use to shoot everyday moments, fast, accurate and minus the hassle that comes with a DSLR.
Official Video
Main Features
Larger sensor compared to smaller compact bodies
The X20 features a 2/3” X-Trans CMOS II sensor new design specific for the X20. Fujifilm claims that the performance of the sensor is comparable to that of the sensor on the X-Pro1. The larger sensor size compared to the standard 1/2.3” sensors of compacts cameras allows for a better light gathering surface. Additionally Fuji has incorporated back-side illumination technology and phase detection AF in the sensor for faster auto-focusing and better low light performance. Fuji has eliminated the Optical Low Pass Filter (OLPF), which is used for eliminating false colors and moiré when shooting repetitive patterns, further enhancing the sharpness of images.
Advanced Optical Viewfinder
The Advanced Optical Viewfinder consists if 2 glass prisms and 2 aspherical elements and offers coverage of 85%. Along with it a Digital Trans Panel, which is actually a LCD panel set in one mm of space inside the viewfinder, shows all the shooting information, the focusing area for you to quickly compose your shots and click. Dark or bright conditions can often be a pain when properly viewing shooting information through the viewfinder. The new Digital Trans Panel automatically changes the color of the shooting information depending on the type of scene and the background color.
The eye sensor
The eye sensor on the X20 automatically turns the LCD off when you raise the camera and look through the viewfinder. Alternatively when you take the camera away you’re your eye the LCD is switched on. This saves a lot of power by not keeping the LCD needlessly on for long stretches of time. Even a lot of entry level DSLR doesn’t have this feature; neither did the X10 its predecessor.
The intelligent Hybrid AF system
The X20 incorporates an intelligent hybrid auto-focusing system that instantaneously switches between contrast detection to phase detection auto-focus and vice-versa depending on the requirements of the scene. Fujifilm claims that the auto-focusing can lock focus on a subject within 0.06 seconds.
Artistic photography
This exciting new camera features FUJIFILM’s proprietary Film Simulation modes. Users can choose from ten different modes which simulate the effects of traditional Fujifilm films. Including colour reversal film effects (Velvia / PROVIA / ASTIA), professional colour negative film (PRO Neg.Std / PRO Neg.Hi), monochrome filters (MONOCHROME, Ye filter, R filter and G filter) and SEPIA.
Also available on the X20 are the Advanced Filter functions; users can choose from 8 different artistic effects which can be previewed on the LCD screen:
Pop Colour – emphasises the contrast and colour saturation
Toy Camera – creates shaded borders as if you were taking a photo on a toy camera
Miniature – adds a blur to the top and bottom for a diorama or miniature effect
Dynamic Tone – giving dynamic gradation for a fantasy finish
Partial Colour – this feature selects one colour and takes the rest of the shot in black and white. Colours can be selected from red, yellow, green, blue, orange and purple
High Key – enhances brightness and reduces contrast to lighten tonal reproduction
NEW Low Key – creates uniformly dark tones with a few areas of emphasised highlights
NEW Soft Focus – blurs the focus of the image edges to create a softer effect
A separate Multiple Exposure function offers users the chance to combine two separate subjects into one photo, offering great artistic expression.
The good
Although, design-wise, the X10 and the X20 are near identical, some layout changes have been incorporated to ensure that the operation of the camera is much better in the new avatar. The zoom feature is now operated using the new mechanically coupled ring. This should be handy if you want precise zooming.
The build quality of the X20 is solid and feels firm when picked up. The magnesium alloy body and the smooth polished surface is a delight for any photographer. Lookwise the black & silver design looks retro and for that reason better compared to the all black one.
The X20 offers RAW shooting plus full manual options. The C1 and C2 options allow you to set your preferred settings for up to two different shooting situations and instantly recall them when required. Additionally the main mode dial now comes with a SR+ mode with an option to choose from among 64 different scenes for the perfect exposure.
The ‘Q’ menu button which has swapped places enables a fast access to the main electronic menu of the X20. Once on the main menu you can conveniently use either of the rear dials or the four-way button to select the option that you need.
The Bad
In spite of having made so much of the cameras controls accessible via buttons and dials, the X20 does not have a dedicated ISO button / dial. Instead what Fuji has done is provided the fn button pre-programmed with a direct access to the ISO option. In case you wish to use this for any other option you lose the direct access to control ISO.
The small form factor can be disconcerting for some photographers. Additionally the lack of a pronounced bulge on the grip area is also a problem, especially when you want to hold the camera with one hand and adjust the focal ring with the other.
Similar Products
The X20 in a line of compact prosumer cameras enjoy a critical advantage in terms of price. It is priced reasonably at around $600. There are not too many options at that price range especially when you throw in the size of the sensor and the zoom lens in the equation. The Canon PowerShot G15 is a fixed focus compact prosumer that retails under $500 and could be considered an alternative but then it has a fixed lens.
Should I buy it?
The X20 makes a great buying decision. Not only for connoisseurs of a retro look but for serious photographers as well. If you already have a DSLR and is looking for a lighter something with full manual controls and a slightly bigger sensor, then this is it. Of course if you need an even bigger sensor then you can look at the Nikon Coolpix – A.

Press Release
Denver, CO (January 7, 2013) — PENTAX RICOH IMAGING AMERICAS CORPORATION (PENTAX) has introduced the MX-1, an advanced digital compact camera whose craft design and vintage lines appeal to a wide variety of photo enthusiasts. It’s fast F1.8-2.5 lens produces sharp and crisp imagery in a variety of settings and the camera’s 1/1.7 inch, 12.0 effective megapixel backlit CMOS sensor renders impressive low-light performance.
Encased in brass covers with an ergonomically-pleasing, texturized grip, the MX-1’s body is a tactile experience. The brass panels are cool to the touch and its high-end composition feels substantial in the hand, enabling simple and intuitive handling. Thanks to its beautiful styling and premium materials, the MX-1 develops a stunning patina impressing a history on the camera with each use.
The camera captures images in a wide variety of settings and its fast lens makes creating beautiful focusing effects and bokeh achievable, enabling heightened creative expression and artistic personalization. The MX-1’s 4X zoom offers a versatile and highly-useable range, from a wide 28mm to telephoto 112mm (in 35mm format), its dual shake-reduction system enables sharp, blur-free images in even the most demanding circumstances.
“The feature set of the MX-1, including its large articulated LCD, makes it a phenomenal choice for photo enthusiasts who require superior image-capturing capabilities but also appreciate the styling and construction of a classic camera.” said John Carlson, senior marketing manager, PENTAX.
Whether it is the seasoned and well-practiced veteran who is brought back to the heart of his passion with the touch and feel of the cool brass panels, or the design-conscious novice who’s inspired by retro character and design, the MX-1 delivers on their hunger to produce beautiful photos through defining optics, electronics and design.
Major features of the MX-1 include:
Expanding photographic horizons with fast lens and versatile zoom
The PENTAX MX-1 features a 4X optical zoom lens offering a large maximum aperture of F1.8 to F2.5 and 28mm wide-angle coverage (in the 35mm format). When set at maximum aperture and widest angle of view the photographer can use fast shutter speeds in dimly lit locations and take advantage of a beautiful bokeh (out-of-focus) effect in the background. The MX-1 also provides a Macro mode to capture dramatic close-up images of subjects from as little as one centimeter away. Additionally, the Intelligent Zoom (digital zoom) function extends the zoom coverage up to approximately 7.8 times (for a focal length of approximately 218mm (in the 35mm format) without compromising image quality by optimizing the resolution to match the zoom length.
Newly engineered backlit CMOS image sensor ensures super-high-resolution images in high-sensitivity shooting
The MX-1 incorporates a newly designed back-illuminated CMOS image sensor. With a top sensitivity of ISO 12800 and approximately 12.0 effective megapixels, it boasts remarkable high-sensitivity, low-noise capabilities and assures high-speed image data readout to deliver high-resolution images. The MX-1 also features a state-of-the-art imaging engine. Supported by the latest Super Resolution technology, this engine offers outstanding image-processing performance to produce clear, high-quality images with well-defined details. In addition, the MX-1’s unique Handheld Night snap mode helps the photographer capture blur-free night-time images by taking multiple images at one time, then synthesizing them into a single composite picture.
Classic and refined design
With its textured-rubber grip, and brass top and bottom covers that develop a distinctive appearance after years of use, the MX-1 offers a classic design reminiscent of traditional film cameras. It also features a number of metallic accents, including the lens ring, to further complete the tasteful, high-class finish down to the fine details.
DSLR operability including in-body RAW data development and dedicated exposure compensation dial enhance the shooting experience
Thanks to a dedicated exposure compensation dial, the MX-1 assures user-friendly, direct-access shift of the exposure compensation setting without the need to recall the menu screen. It also features a mode dial for swift, effortless setting of 10 different shooting modes — ranging from the hands-off Auto Picture and the all-purpose Programmed AE, to the more creative Aperture-priority AE, Shutter-priority AE and Metered Manual. As the result, the photographer is assured of outstanding creative freedom to choose the most appropriate shooting mode for a particular scene or subject without delay. Additionally, the MX-1 comes equipped with a host of SLR-like features to optimize its operability, including advanced UI (user interface) functions, easy-to-access controls and in-body RAW data development.
Dual shake-reduction system produces sharp, blur-free images
The MX-1’s dual shake-reduction system couples the PENTAX-developed sensor-shift-type SR (Shake Reduction) mechanism with a digital SR mode to more effectively compensate for camera shake. This hybrid system guarantees the photographer sharp, blur-free images even under demanding shooting conditions prone to camera shake, such as when using a telephoto lens, shooting with incident light in poorly lit locations, or photographing sunset scenes.
Large, articulated LCD display simplifies capturing images at challenging angles
The MX-1 comes equipped with a large 3.0-inch, high-definition LCD display with approximately 921,000 dots. Its articulated design allows the photographer to adjust the display vertically and set it to the angle easiest for capturing and viewing. It also provides a clear view of images and menus displayed on the screen to assure quick, effortless review of recorded images and swift, error-free setting changes.
Full HD video captures high-quality movies with the push of a button
The MX-1 features Full HD movie recording functionality employing the H.264 recording format, to capture high-quality, extended movie clips (with 1920 x 1080 pixels, at a 16:9 aspect ratio, and at a frame rate of 30 frames per second). Switching to video mode is simple and intuitive; with the push of a dedicated button, the MX-1 instantly begins recording video from any shooting mode. It also offers creative movie capture modes — including a High-speed Movie mode* for slow-motion playback and a Time-lapse Movie mode* for fast-forward playback — to make movie capturing and viewing more fun and exciting. A micro-HDMI terminal (Type D) is also included on the camera body for quick and efficient output of recorded movies and sound to external devices.
* In these modes, the recorded size is fixed at VGA dimensions (640 x 480 pixels).

The camera’s 28mm wide-angle 8x optical zoom lens and shutter are both operated on the camera’s dual-ring lens. The outer ring controls the shutter, which can be released from any point on the ring, and the inner ring controls the zoom, so managing the PowerShot N is easy and effortless. With these innovative new design features, users now have the ability to shoot diagonally, horizontally and from low or high angles so even the most out-of-reach image can be captured with ease.
In addition, the PowerShot N offers a new ECO Mode, a feature that provides approximately 30 percent longer battery life when enabled, by dimming the screen and eventually shutting off the display after the device has been idle for 10 seconds, allowing users to shoot more and for longer. Adding to its portability and convenience, the camera features USB charging through a computer or traditional charging by the AC adaptor, allowing users to power-up from virtually anywhere.
Pricing and Availability
The PowerShot N is expected to be available in April 2013 for an estimated retail price of $299.99, in white or black.

Lexar Introduces High-Performance 600x UHS-I SDXC Memory Card
Lexar High-Performance 600x UHS-I Memory Card Offers High Performance to Dramatically Accelerate Workflow
New 256GB SDXC UHS-I Card Captures, Stores, and Transfers High-Quality Photos and Extended Lengths of Full-HD Video
Fremont, CA, January 7, 2013 – Lexar, a leading global brand of flash memory products, today announced the 256GB Lexar® Professional 600x SDXC™ UHS-I card. The Class 10 card offers a 90MB* per second minimum guaranteed read transfer speed to give photographers and videographers the ability to capture extended lengths of 1080p HD and 3D video and high-quality images. When paired with a compatible card reader, such as the Lexar® Professional USB 3.0 Dual-Slot Reader, the Professional 600x SDXC card helps photographers zip through post-production with high-speed card-to-computer file transfer, improving workflow and enabling them to shoot longer.
“With the growing demands of HD and 3D video capabilities, today’s professional photographers and videographers need to be equipped with a high-performance and high-capacity memory card to meet the needs of their clients,” said Manisha Sharma, director of product marketing, Lexar. “By using the 256GB Lexar Professional SDXC UHS-I card, professionals can leverage all the latest camera features available for capturing high-quality video and images, without having to worry about time spent changing cards or transferring content to the computer. We want our customers to make the most of their time out on the field.”
“Small capacity cards are not efficient for shooting a lot of HD and 3D video. Constantly having to change cards eats away at time spent behind the camera, and also means I’ll have to spend more time transferring the content from each card to my computer,” said Lexar Elite Photographer David Honl. “Lexar cards help improve my workflow by giving me the mix of capacity and performance that allows me to shoot longer and spend less time transferring my videos and images.”
The Lexar Professional 600x 256GB SDXC UHS-I card includes the latest downloadable version of Image Rescue® 4 software to help recover lost or deleted photo and video files, even if they’ve been erased or the card has been corrupted.** All Lexar memory card designs are tested in the Lexar Quality Labs to ensure performance, quality, compatibility, and reliability with more than 800 digital cameras and memory card devices. The Professional 600x SDXC UHS-I card comes with a limited lifetime warranty and free dedicated professional technical support.
The 256GB Lexar Professional 600x SDXC UHS-I card will be available in January for purchase with an MSRP of $999.99 from Lexar.com and leading retail and e-tail outlets worldwide. For additional information about Lexar Professional products, visit www.lexar.com.

Press Release
The Sigma Corporation is pleased to announce the release of the new SIGMA 120-300mm F2.8 DG OS HSM, the telephoto zoom lens that achieves superior performance redesigned to meet photographers’ needs.
Conventionally, large aperture lenses for 300mm F2.8 have been loved by professional users due to their brilliant capability of depiction and bright aperture value. It has established a solid standpoint in the world of photography. Based on the concept that turning a 300mm F2.8 lens into zoom lens would enable photographers to expand the scope of shooting, we have developed 120-300mm F2.8 lenses and released them into the market. It is not simple to decide on a composition with a 300mm lens. Especially for sports and theatrical shows, shooting positions are almost always fixed and changing lenses could lead to missed photographs. By adding a zoom function with the large aperture 300mm F2.8 lens, it no longer requires other interchangeable lenses and rotation of the zoom ring will offer excellent framing. In other words, when conditions are difficult, this high-performance lens gives you more scope to express yourself in the shots you take.
Special Features:
- Sports line lenses deliver high action-capture performance
Sigma is organizing all its interchangeable lenses into three product lines; Contemporary, Art and Sports. While offering sophisticated optical performance and expressiveness, our Sports line lenses deliver high action-capture performance, enabling photographers to get exactly the shots they want. With their high-level optical performance and expressive power, these lenses can capture fast-moving subjects, even at distance. This high-performance line also offers a variety of functions to aid the photographer in challenging conditions and scenarios. The SIGMA 120-300mm F2.8 DG OS HSM is the first product from the “Sports” line. Besides sports photography, the lenses are also perfect for nature shots featuring birds, wild animals and other wildlife, and for capture of aircraft, trains, racing cars and more. Another major feature of our Sports line lenses is their wide range of customization functions: using the software provided, all sorts of settings can be tailored to the personal preferences of the photographer. - Dust-proof and splash-proof construction
For professional purposes, we have achieved excellent durability by incorporating dust-proof and splash-proof parts for joint parts, such as mount attachment, manual ring, zoom-ring, switches for customization and external switch panels. It prevents dust and dirt from entering the lens. Also, the usage of the zoom ring and focus ring is well positioned for shooting situations. - High image quality close to fixed focal length lens.
This lens incorporates 2 FLD (“F” Low Dispersion) glass elements, which have performance equal to fluorite, 1 SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass element, and compensate for the color aberration at the utmost. The design also compensates for sagittal coma flare and minimizes the blurring of a point light source in peripheral areas. It offers very high image quality, close to fixed focal length lens. - Incorporation of focus limiter
Excellent usability is achieved by incorporating inner focusing and zooming that requires no change in the length of the lens for focus and zoom. It is possible to use with a rounded filter, such as a Circular Polarizer, as the front part of the lens is fixed. Due to the focus limiter offering adjustable range of auto focusing, this lens can provide fast focus setting. The USB dock enables users to change the range of the auto focusing at the discretion of users’ creativity. - Newly developed “USB DOCK” exclusively for new product lines
Based on these new lines, we have developed special software (SIGMA Optimization Pro) that can update the lens firmware and adjust parameters such as focus. In addition, the lenses from our Sports line have customizable AF speed, focus limiter and OS function. The “Custom Mode Switch” is the device for further customization on the dedicated lenses. - Ease of use
Many parts of this lens have been designed for comfortable usage. For example, the design of the zoom ring is concerned with a texture when you hold it, the position of printed letters and the 4 control switches with integration-considered shape of the screws. Included accessories such as the removable lens hood and the newly designed tripod collar with strap ensure added ease of use.
Other Features:
- Flare and ghosting conscious design – SIGMA’s Super Multi-Layer Coating reduces flare and ghosting. It provides sharp and high contrast images throughout the entire zoom range.
- Excellent in handheld photography for telephoto shooting – This lens incorporates the OS system which offers the use of shutter speeds approximately 4 stops slower than would otherwise be possible, ensuring the excellent use in handheld photography for telephoto shooting. The OS system has two modes – OS mode 1 is suitable for general photography, and OS mode 2 is best for panning shots of subjects such as planes or racing cars. It is possible to adjust the OS using the optional USB DOCK.* This lens cannot be used with film SLR cameras with the exception of the Nikon F6, Canon EOS-1v.
- Quiet and Fast AF – The HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) ensures high speed and quiet AF as well as full-time manual focus override by rotation of the focus ring. With the enhanced AF algorithm, smoother AF is achieved. The full time manual, which offers further adjustment after focusing with AF mode, is possible. By using USB Dock, you can change and adjust the AF speed at your convenience.
- Incorporating Rounded Diaphragm – The 9 blade-rounded diaphragm creates an attractive blur to the out-of-focus areas of the image.
- APO Tele-Converter (Optional) – The addition of Sigma’s 1.4x EX DG APO or 2x EX DG APO TELE CONVERTER produces a 168-420mm F4 AF telephoto zoom lens or a 240-600mm F5.6 AF telephoto zoom lens respectively.
- Brass made bayonet mount – This lens incorporates a brass made bayonet mount which has both high accuracy and durability. A special treatment to reinforce its strength is applied to the surface giving it greater strength and making it highly resistant to long-term use.
- Evaluation with Sigma’s own MTF measuring system “A1” – We used to measure lens performance with an MTF measuring system using conventional sensors. However, we’ve now developed our own proprietary MTF (modulation transfer function) measuring system (A1) using 46-megapixel Foveon direct image sensors. Even previously undetectable high-frequency details are now within the scope of our quality control inspections. The SIGMA 17-70mm F2.8-4 DC MACRO OS HSM will all be checked using this “A1” before they are shipped.
- “Made in Japan” – All Sigma’s manufacturing – right down to the molds and parts – is carried out under an integrated production system, entirely in Japan. We are now one of the very few manufacturers whose products are solely “made in Japan”. We like to think our products are somehow imbued with the essence of our homeland, blessed as it is with clean air and water, and focused, hard-working people. We pride ourselves on the authentic quality of Sigma products, born of a marriage between highly attuned expertise and intelligent, advanced technology. Our sophisticated products have satisfied professionals and lovers of photography all over the world, because our manufacturing is based on genuine craftsmanship, underpinned by the passion and pride of our experts.

Press Release
The Sigma Corporation is pleased to announce the release of the new SIGMA 17-70mm F2.8-4 DC MACRO OS HSM / DC MACRO HSM, the large-aperture APS-C standard zoom lens with a focal range that covers all your everyday needs along with macro functionality.
The most important features for a standard zoom lens for digital single lens reflex camera is to achieve high image quality, to meet the needs in various occasions and to be handy and compact.
The SIGMA 17-70mm F2.8-4 DC MACRO OS HSM will clear away all the general concerns, such as a short minimum focusing distance, not a long enough focal length for telephoto shooting and a small aperture value. Mainly used for general-purpose photography, this everyday lens covers a range equivalent to 25.5-105mm on a 35mm camera. It’s surprisingly compact in size for a large-aperture lens that opens up to F2.8. Great for treasured snapshots of travel or family occasions, it also handles shots that are a little bit more creative. Designed to be the kind of lens you carry around with you all the time, it delivers simplicity and is so user-friendly it’s sure to satisfy even the most demanding of users.
Special Features:
- Contemporary line can handle all sorts of photo opportunities
Sigma is organizing all its interchangeable lenses into three product lines; Contemporary, Art and Sports. Featuring the very latest technology, and combining optical performance with compactness, the Contemporary line covers a wide range of needs. Incorporating the very latest technology in these lenses, Sigma has solved the difficult problem of keeping size and weight low without compromising optical performance. The SIGMA 17-70mm F2.8-4 DC MACRO OS HSM is the first product from the Contemporary line. Featuring a wide zoom range, the lens has a focal range equivalent to 25.5-105mm on a 35mm lens. - Excellent for macro photography
This lens’ minimum focusing distance is 22cm and the maximum magnification ratio is 1:2.8. At 70mm, the working distance becomes 5.52cm. When it comes to telephoto, it can shoot pictures with a similar sensation to a macro lens. Also, without the need to change the lens, it enables photographers to take a close up pictures of subjects such as jewelry and flowers. In order to secure a clear field of view, the design of this lens is very thorough, even down to the precise position of the engraved letters on the lens. - 30% Smaller Than Conventional Models
For a which is used lens used in everyday situations, the small size makes a big difference. By incorporating a smaller OS unit and optimizing the structure and power distribution of optical elements, the lens barrel has now become more compact. In order to ensure high accuracy of the product, the new compound material TSC (Thermally Stable Composite), which has high affinity to metal parts, is introduced for the lens barrel. It results in better durability of the parts and smaller zoom rings and scale rings. The dimension of this lens is 30% smaller than our conventional models. - Superior Image Quality Throughout The Entire Zoom Range
This lens incorporates 2 FLD (“F” Low Dispersion) glass elements, which have performance equal to fluorite, 1 SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass element and 3 aspherical glass lenses including double sided aspherical lens. By optimizing the power alignment of the lens, both chromatic aberration of magnification and axial chromatic aberration have been corrected. From infinity to macro, it achieves superior image quality through entire zoom range. This lens offers extraordinary expressive power and is capable of surpassing the requirement of the rigorous checking process of our new MTF measuring system “A1”. - Large maximum aperture of F2.8
The aperture value is F2.8 at the wide end (17mm), and is F4 at the telephoto end (70mm). The bright viewfinder aids focusing and composition of images. The fast apertures also offer useful functions such as fast shutter speeds to prevent an object from being blurred and ensuring a smooth bokeh in the background.
Other Features:
- Optical Stabilizer – Sigma’s own unique OS (Optical Stabilizer) function is incorporated. It offers effective correction of approximately 4 stops, which makes it possible to compensate for camera shake even in macro range photography where a small blur can be easily identified.*1. The closer the lens is to the object, the less effective the OS function is.
*2. For Sony and Pentax, OS function is not incorporated. - Flare and ghosting conscious design – In order to achieve high rendering on this flagship lens, flare and ghosting were thoroughly measured from an early stage to establish an optical design which is resistant to strong incident light such as backlight. The Super Multi-Layer Coating reduces flare and ghosting and provides sharp and high contrast images even in backlit conditions.
- Incorporating Rounded Diaphragm – The 7 blade-rounded diaphragm creates an attractive blur to the out-of-focus areas of the image.
- Hyper Sonic Motor – The HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) ensures high speed and quiet AF as well as full-time manual focus override by rotation of the focus ring. With the enhanced AF algorithm, smoother AF is achieved.
- Brass made bayonet mount This lens incorporates a brass made bayonet mount which has both high accuracy and durability. A special treatment to reinforce its strength is applied to the surface giving it greater strength and making it highly resistant to long-term use.
- Ease of use – The new product lines incorporate rubber for the attachment part of the provided lens hood. For better usability, the design of the lens cap and AF / MF changeover switch has been improved.
- Newly developed “USB DOCK” exclusively for new product lines – Based on these new lines, we have developed special software (SIGMA Optimization Pro) that can update the lens firmware and adjust parameters such as focus.
- Evaluation with Sigma’s own MTF measuring system “A1” – We used to measure lens performance with MTF measuring system using conventional sensors. However, we’ve now developed our own proprietary MTF (modulation transfer function) measuring system (A1) using 46-megapixel Foveon direct image sensors. Even previously undetectable high-frequency details are now within the scope of our quality control inspections. Nikon 1 J3
Nikon 1 J3 (Amazon | Adorama | B&H)
Nikon recently launched the J3 a new entry to its 1 series of MILCs. The J3 has a 14.2-megapixel CMOS sensor, the same as the Nikon 1 V2. However unlike the V2 the J3 has been given a serious bump in the continuous shooting drive. It has a maximum burst rate of 60 fps (with focus-locked), albeit at a maximum of 15 frames in one go. If you forgo speed and go for continuous AF performance, even then the J3 churns out a spectacular 15 fps.
Further upgrades that even a semi-pro DSLR user would drool about is the Hybrid auto-focus system featuring 73-point auto-focusing points and an upgraded Expeed 3A image processing system. The new image processing system means the camera has a low ISO sensitivity of 160-6400.
Promo Video
The J3 has a new interesting mode option in the mode dial. The Advanced movie mode now assists shooting slow motion video. Apart from this the other mode options include S – shutter priority, A – aperture priority, P – program mode (full-auto) and manual modes but in order to use them one has to dig deeper into the menu as the mode dial does not offer these directly. The J3 uses all three popular storage options in the SD, SDHC and the SDXC cards.
At 3:2 ratio the J3 shoots stills of size 4,608 x 3,072 pixels. It shoots full HD in 1080 in 60i//30p and 720p HD in 60p/30p. There are no built-in OPV and the composing has to be made via the 3” TFT LCD screen that boasts a resolution of 921,000 dots. The external dimensions of the J3 are 4.0 x 2.4 x 1.1 and it weighs 201 grams and ships with a 10-30mm lens

Nikon 1 S1
Nikon 1 S1
The S1 launched recently along with yet another MILC from Nikon, the J3. It is the smallest MILC that has been launched by Nikon yet and is aimed directly at users looking to migrate from a point and shoot to a DSLR like camera minus the complexity. This camera is best in the hands of those who are looking for a lightweight yet flexible system with a slightly larger sensor than what a point and shoot offers. To be retailed starting in February 2013 at $500 this is the new entry level Nikon 1 series camera so to say. It has a 13.2mm x 8.8mm CMOS sensor with an effective megapixel of 10.1.
The S1 has a Hybrid auto-focusing system with both phase detection and contrast-detection and boasts 73 AF points. It can shoot at 60 fps for a maximum of 15 frames in one burst when AF is locked. With continuous AF it can shoot at 15 fps. The CMOS sensor of the S1 is slightly more sensitive in low light compared to the J3 and has a range of 100-6400.
Promo Video
The S1 takes still images of max size 3,872 x 2,592 pixels a well as shoots full HD movies at 60i /30p and 720p HD movies at 60p/30p. It has a 3” TFT LCD screen that has a resolution of 460,000 dots.
The S1 is compatible with most of the popular storage cards including SD, SDHC and SDXC. The external dimensions of the camera are 4.0 x 2.4 x 1.2 and it weighs only 197 grams. The S1 will be shipped together with the 11-27.5mm lens.
