Canon 5D Mark III To Get f/8 AF Capability & Uncompressed HDMI Output Through New Firmware Update!
NEW FIRMWARE UPDATE FOR CANON EOS 5D MARK III DIGITAL SLR CAMERA PROVIDES UNCOMPRESSED HDMI OUTPUT SUPPORT AND IMPROVED AF PERFORMANCE
From Canon:
LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y., October 23, 2012 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today announced a new firmware update for the EOS 5D Mark III Digital SLR camera that significantly improves the camera’s performance and usability. In response to requests from professionals working in the fields of cinema and television production, the firmware update enables the use of uncompressed HDMI Output support, making possible more efficient video editing and monitoring procedures. Additionally, the upgrade supports the advanced needs of photographers through improved AF performance when capturing still images.
Uncompressed HDMI Output Support
When shooting video, HDMI Output makes possible the recording of high-definition uncompressed video data (YCbCr 4:2:2, 8 bit) from the EOS 5D Mark III to an external recorder via the camera’s HDMI terminal. This, in turn, facilitates the editing of video data with minimal image degradation for greater on-site workflow efficiency during motion picture and video productions. Additionally, video being captured can be displayed on an external monitor, enabling real-time, on-site monitoring of high-definition video during shooting.
Improved AF Functionality
Even when the EOS 5D Mark III is equipped with an extender and lens making possible a maximum aperture of f/8, the firmware update supports AF employing the camera’s central cross-type points (currently compatible with maximum apertures up to f/5.6). Accordingly, the update will allow users to take advantage of AF when shooting distant subjects, benefitting sports and nature photographers, particularly when using telephoto lenses.
The new firmware update will be available, at no charge, in April 2013 from the Canon U.S.A. website and can be downloaded by end users or through Canon Factory Service Centers.

Canon EOS-1D X Now Able to Autofocus at f/8 With New Firmware Update!
LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y., October 17, 2012 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today announced a new firmware update in response to user requests which further enhances the capabilities of Canon’s flagship EOS-1D X Digital SLR camera. The EOS-1D X will now be capable of AF point illumination during AI Servo AF and cross-type AF for maximum apertures as small as f/8. The new firmware update is available now at no charge from the Canon U.S.A. website and can be downloaded by end users or through Canon Factory Service Centers.
AF Point Illumination During AI Servo AF
To support the needs of wedding, portrait, sports, wildlife, and theatrical performance photographers working in low light, the new firmware allows AF points in the EOS-1D X’s viewfinder to be illuminated in red when the shutter button is pressed halfway during AI Servo AF, for easy viewing of the selected point. This valuable feature will enhance the photographers’ ability to aim the camera accurately in low-light conditions, and when photographing dark subjects. To preserve exposure-metering accuracy, illumination is intermittent, not continuous. Three choices will be selectable from the menu system – Non-illuminated, Illuminated (Normal) and Illuminated (Brighter).
Cross-Type AF Support at f/8
The EOS-1D X is equipped with an innovative 61-point High Density Reticular AF System featuring up to 41 cross-type AF points, depending on the lens in use. The cross-type AF points recognize a wide variety of subject matter, making them highly desirable for maximum autofocus performance. Until now, cross-type AF on the EOS-1D X has been limited to EF lenses and lens/extender combinations with a maximum aperture of f/5.6 or larger. The new firmware allows cross-type autofocusing with the center AF point even when the maximum aperture of a Canon EF lens/extender combination becomes as small as f/8. Ideal for wildlife photographers and others who often use EF super-telephoto lenses with extenders, this new feature greatly expands the range of EF lens/extender combinations that support autofocus when used with the EOS-1D X.
If AF point expansion is selected with an f/8 maximum aperture lens/extender combination, the four AF points surrounding the center point will act as AF Assist points. This option effectively expands the size of the AF detection area to enhance autofocus performance with subjects that are small in the frame and difficult to track, such as small animals and birds in flight. AF points above and below the center will be sensitive to vertical contrast, while points to the left and right will be sensitive to horizontal contrast.

Overview
This lens has a great focal length range of 24-70mm and designed for full frame DSLRs. It directly competes with a number of Canon’s and Nikon’s 24-70mm lenses in terms of its performance and features. It features Sigma’s HSM (Hyper-sonic motor) which is a similar type technology to the USM from Canon and keeps the lens quiet during auto-focusing.
The lens is designed for landscape, wedding and a general purpose lens for everyday shooting needs. It also serves as a great portrait lens and is suitable for most lighting conditions because of the f/2.8 aperture.
The lens has a total of 14 elements including three aspherical elements, one SLD (super low dispersion) and one ELD (extra low dispersion) elements arranged in 12 groups. Sigma has also provided multi-layer coating on the lens to ensure that ghosts and flares are suppressed to a large extent.
The diaphragm of the lens is made up of 9 rounded blades giving it a maximum constant aperture of f/2.8. However, it can stop all the way down to f/22 as well. The rounded blades are also responsible for the purpose of creating a beautiful soft bokeh. At only 15” the lens has a very close focusing distance and a maximum magnification ratio of 1:5.3. The angle of view of the lens is 84.1-34.3.
Sigma’s EX lenses are known for their quality build and this lens does not disappoint in that regard. The dimensions of the lens are 3.5 x 3.7” and it weighs 790 grams. Also check Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG OS HSM

Overview
Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS Lens
Whether you’re interested in landscape photography or taking portrait snaps of your loved ones a focal length range of 17-70mm is a great choice. While most kit lenses will only give you a range of 18-55mm the extra 10-15mm of reach can often make a lot of difference. The Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS (Amazon | Adorama | B&H) fits that bill and with a wide f/2.8 aperture the lens is perfect for almost any type of lighting. The close focusing distance of 8.7” means the lens gives a magnification ratio of 1:2.7. This is a great macro lens to begin with or seriously explore further into close-up photography. Having said that, the focal length range of the lens offers a lot of flexibility to shoot landscapes, portraits, wedding as well and pretty much everything except wild-life.
Sigma’s OS (Optical Stabilization) technology gives a shake free image and coupled with the wide aperture it is possible to manage both reasonably long exposures and tricky lighting with hand. up to four stops of slow shutter speed correction is possible with the lens. For users wielding a Pentax or Pentax DSLR the optical viewfinder will show a optically stabilized view of the FOV.
The lens construction includes 17 elements arranged in 13 groups. The diaphragm of the lens is made up of 7 blades and apart from the wide maximum aperture of f/2.8 it can stop all the way down to f/22. The external dimensions of the lens are 3.1 x 3.5” and it weighs 535 grams. Similar product Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM Lens

Lytro Camera Adds New Manual Controls
We’re celebrating the launch of three big changes for the Lytro camera: new manual controls, new colors and new accessories.
Manual Controls – Creative Tools for Lytro Photographers
With new, easy-to-use, and readily accessible manual controls, Lytro camera owners have more creative capabilities with light field photography. “Manual controls give Lytro photographers the opportunity to take control of the exposure in a scene,” said Eric Cheng, Lytro’s director of photography. “We introduced these features as a result of feedback from our most creative camera owners, who are capturing things like subjects in motion or experimenting with artistic styles like light painting. With manual controls, they now have more flexibility as they push the boundaries of the light field.” Check out these examples for inspiration.
The new controls are:
- Shutter Speed- By manually controlling the shutter speed, Lytro photographers can keep the shutter open longer to capture living pictures in dark conditions. The maximum shutter speed is 8 seconds and the minimum is 1/250 second.
- ISO Sensitivity – Controlling ISO gives Lytro photographers more ways to take creative living pictures in a variety of lighting conditions, from low-light concerts and restaurants to brightly lit soccer fields and amusement parks. The ISO range is 80 (min) to 3200 (max).
- Neutral Density (ND) Filter – When in full manual mode, Lytro photographers can turn on the ND Filter to adjust the amount of light captured in extremely bright settings.
- Auto Exposure (AE) Lock – Lytro photographers can lock the auto exposure while changing the composition of a picture in a scene.
These controls are included in all new camera purchases starting today. For existing Lytro camera owners, the free camera update begins rolling out today. To check for the update, just plug your Lytro camera into your computer.

Nikon D800/D800E is incompatible with Eye-Fi X2 Cards
“The Nikon D800 / D800E is not compatible with Eye-Fi X2 Cards.
Eye-Fi engineering has found and confirmed a compatibility issue with the Eye-Fi card that impacts the use of Direct Mode in the Nikon D800. We are currently investigating an issue with the D800’s SD slot that appears to contribute to a lack of steady signal while the Eye-Fi card is in Direct Mode which makes the Direct Mode feature incompatible with the camera. The Nikon D800/D800e passes all other wireless network tests and is compatible with wireless transfers via a wireless router.”

Canon EF 135 f/2.8 with Soft Focus Lens
Product Summary
- Model name: Canon EF 135 f/2.8 Soft Focus Lens
- Format: Full Frame
- Mount: Canon EF
- Color: Black
- Purchase Options: Amazon | Adorama | B&H
Features
A soft-focus lens is one that creates a blurred image but at the same time the edges of the image still remain in sharp focus. This is inherently a limitation of the optics of the lens and was a common factor back in the old days. When photographers started using them creatively, lenses such as the EF 135mm f/2.8 with soft focus started to get in demand. Lenses such as this one are now used by specialist soft-focus photography enthusiasts.
The EF 135mm f/2.8 can be used also as a normal 135mm f/2.8 lens which should be ideal for photographers looking for a medium range telephoto at an affordable price. There are built-in options for the two settings. This gives the lens a lot of flexibility. The EF 135mm f/2L USM is almost double the price of the EF 135mm f/2.8 (Soft Focus).
The lens construction has 7 elements arranged in 6 groups and has a minimum focusing distance of 1.3 meters or 4.3’. Certainly the lack of closeness of the minimum focusing distance rules out it being a preferred choice for macro photography. Presence of rear focusing system means the lens does not extend when focused. The diagonal angle of view of the lens is 18°.
The build quality of the lens leaves something to be desired. It is almost entirely build out of plastic except for the lens mount. The overall dimensions of the lens are 2.7″ x 3.9″ and it weighs 390 grams. It takes a filter of size 52mm.

The lens offers a decent performance in low light conditions and when shooting fast action photography.

As such it offers a great telephoto reach for smaller micro four thirds based MILC cameras. The lens has minimum focusing distance of 34.50”.
Overall design is very compact and solid. The lens has a large manual focusing ring that helps in the precise focusing of the lens. The barrel is metal made and offers a secure feeling. The lens is catadioptric and has very little to non-existent chromatic aberration. Even then Tokina has provided multi-layer coating which means the lens has absolutely no issues from flares and ghosts when shooting in bright sunlight.
The external dimensions of the lens are 2.17” x 2.60″. The lens has a total of 13 elements arranged on 11 groups. The lens has a weight of 298 grams and it takes a filter of 55mm. Available at Amazon | Adorama | B&H
