Tokina 100mm f/2.8 Macro AT-X M100 AF PRO D Lens

Tokina 100mm f:2.8 Macro AT-X M100 AF PRO D Lens

Product Summary

Overview

For true macro photography perspectives you would need a lens that gives you a 1:1 magnification ratio. With a close minimum focusing distance of 11.8” and a 1:1 magnification ratio the Tokina 100mm f/2.8 Macro AT-X M100 AF PRO D lens does just that. But that is not all that this sharp lens can do. Compatible for 35mm film and full frame DSLRs the lens can also work as a medium range tele-photo lens. All you need to do is to flick the focus limited switch and you’re ready to shoot. At f/2.8 the lens operates very well for fast action and even for shooting in difficult low light conditions. Tokina’s one touch clutch mechanism that segregates the manual and auto-focusing features ensures that the lens is easy to use.

The lens should suit any and all macro photography users wielding crop, full frame or even film cameras. Auto-focusing capabilities of the lens is good not excellent. Some users will find the manual focusing to be a much better option. Additionally during auto-focusing the lens makes considerable amount of noise that may be disconcerting for some users. This is generated by the AF motor inside the lens. This is not an Ultra-sonic motor.

On a crop DSLR the lens will provide the same field of view as a 150mm/160mm (Nikon/Canon) lens mounted on a full frame. The lens construction includes a total of 9 elements arranged in 8 groups. The lens takes a filter of size 55mm and weighs 540 grams. Available at Amazon | Adorama | B&H

Leica announces 24MP full-frame Leica M with movies & Live View

Leica M

The Leica M carries on the legacy of the Leica rangefinder cameras and the precision and joy of being able to manually adjust focus and do everything else, instead of the electronics of a modern big fat DSLR doing everything for you. Rangefinder users have always advocated that these cameras are faster and accurate more often than even the best of DSLRs when it comes to focusing and making sharp exposures.

Key features & specs

  • Range finder camera in a compact design
  • Newly designed full frame 24 megapixels CMOS sensor
  • 3” LCD screen with display resolution of 920,000 dots
  • Corning® Gorilla® Glass screen protector for the LCD screen to prevent scratches
  • Full HD video shooting capabilities using .mov and Motion JPEG formats
  • Compatible with full frame Leica-R lenses when the Leica R-adapter M is used
  • Top and bottom plates machined out of solid brass. Additionally the main body area is made out of a single block of high strength magnesium alloy
  •  Weather sealed to prevent dust and moisture and even rain to impact the camera
  • ISO sensitivity of 200 – 3200. further expandable from 100 – 6400
  • Continuous shooting speed of 3 fps
  • Audio level controller when using an external stereo mic jack via the 3.5 mm mic jack
  • Leica Maestro Image processing engine

Features

The newly designed 24 megapixels CMOS sensor

The newly designed sensor features a flat pixel architecture. What it does is gather a larger amount of light when compared to traditional pixel layout. The result is superb low light performance, sharper images and greater detail. Additionally when Leica designed the new sensor they had kept in mind both Leica-R and Leica-M lenses would be compatible with it.

Live view and live view focusing feature

The live view and the Live View focusing are two new features in the Leica M. for the first time Leica users would be able to take advantage of the large LCD screen and use it to compose much as one would do on a compact camera.

Weather sealing

True to Leica’s reputation for making sturdy built-for-life cameras, the Leica M is built using brass plates and the main body is made out of magnesium alloy. The camera is finally sealed using specially formulated rubber to ensure that there are no seepages. The viewfinder glass is made out of Corning® Gorilla® glass which is tough and scratch resistant. The Leica M is designed to last no doubt about that.

The good

When the new Leica M was launched in Photokina 2012 it became the first Leica M series camera that came with video capabilities. With a full frame sensor and Leica’s legendary reputation things do look bright with the Leica M. at this point however the videos can be a maximum of 4 gigs or 29 mins only.

Full manual controls in video mode. The shutter speed adjustment option that photographers can use in their stills can be tweaked for video filming as well.

Dedicated video button for instant video recording has been provided at the top panel of the camera.

The Leica M is compatible with the Visoflex EVF2 Electronic Viewfinder. Together with a Leica R adapter users ca now use a Leica-R lens and use the EVF to compose just as one would do using a traditional DSLR.

The Bad

The built-in mic for recording sound while shooting videos is mono. However an option to plug in an external stereo mic jack is available. There is no HDMI output. Lack of an HDMI output will impair professional cinematographers from using the camera to shoot videos with a monitor attached. Additionally consumers will find it difficult to project what they have shot on a LCD TV. Together Leica seems to tell its users that this is a serious camera for shooting stills and videos are just an add-on feature for the camera.

Similar Products

The Leica M truly stands in a league of its own. There is no dearth of APS-C sensor based prosumer compacts in the market such as the Fuji XPro-1 or the Sony NEX-7 but truly the Leica M stands apart from the crowd in terms of performance, durability and perfection. Even when compared among the full frame compacts such as Sony DSC-RX1, this camera is miles ahead. Sure you get a lot of cheaper alternatives, mostly with excellent image quality at a price that is a faction of the stiff price tag that the Leica comes with but then it is like settling for the economy class because it still takes you to your destination.

Should I buy it?

Rangefinders have always been around. They had gone out of fashion when DSLRs started getting smarter and gave consumers the convenience of letting the camera decide for them. But rangefinders are an acquired taste; they are like fine wine that can never really go out of importance, regardless of what the market thinks. For purists rangefinders are the only way. It really adds that extra joy of being able to make a picture rather than allowing it to fall in place using auto-focusing, electronically controlled zooming and other ‘smart’ features that literally threatens to take the joy of photography.

If you don’t like the way you have to manually focus everything or the actual process how rangefinders actually have to be focused, then the Leica M is not for you. That’s it. But if you’re a purist, a connoisseur, a street photographer who loves the idea of a full frame compact model that can only be focused manually, the Leica M throws some interesting possibilities and challenges.

At $7000 you can pre-order one of these which bring us to the question whether this is a camera that is out of bounds of most amateur and even professional photographers. Yes indeed. This camera is not meant for everyone. At the same price you can buy yourself a top of the line professional DSLR and a set of lenses to go with it so why bother for the Leica M? Simply because it is the ‘best’ when it comes to image quality and perfection.

Leica announces the Leica M-E starting at $5450

Leica ME

Leica M-E

The Leica M-E stands for quality, durability and simplicity. For decades the Leica M has been the most trusted friend for photographers who love to keep things simple, in essence capturing every moment worth a thousand words, enjoying the process while doing so. Ever since rangefinders been available in the market photographers have looked at the Leica M cameras with hope wielding it around their neck as an extension of their body using it as an extension of their soul.

Key features & specs

The Leica M-E is built on the same hallowed grounds that carry the legacy of the Leica M cameras. It is undoubtedly an attempt by Leica to make the camera more ‘affordable’ which we can safely say by looking at the comparative specs sheet and then comparing the same with the specs sheet of the Leica M9. Both the cameras have an 18 megapixels Kodak KAF 18500 CCD sensor and both don’t have the Optical Low Pass Filter resulting in sharper details. Both the cameras have a unique designing scheme in the sensor which is impartial to light from any angle. Size-wise both cameras share the same specification of 5.5 x 3.15 x 1.5”. They have the same weight when picked up.

So here are the main features of the Leica M-E

  • 18 megapixels Kodak KAF 18500 sensor
  • ISO range of 160 – 2500. can be further pulled to 80
  • 2.5” non-articulating TFT LCD monitor with a resolution of 230,000 dots
  • tough build quality (commensurate the Leica standard) with magnesium – alloy body with synthetic leather panels
  • the top cap and bottom plates are made out of solid brass
  • center-weighted TTL metering system
  • continuous shooting speed of 2 frames per second
  • manual shutter speed selector using a dedicated dial
  • Auto exposure bracketing with selectable number of shots (3/5/7) and with increments of ½ to 2 stops.

Features

Exposure modes – the M-E has the same exposure modes as the Leica M9 had, which in turn is the same as the M7. There are two exposure modes, Aperture priority, where you set the Aperture Value and the camera decides the shutter speed and the ISO and the second one is Manual mode where you set everything.

The good

There is no such thing as a ‘cheap Leica’ (pun intended) but yet if you’re looking for an affordable one this is one of the cheaper Leica options that you can opt for.

Manual focusing is the best part of any Leica rangefinders. Forget your standard DSLR auto-focusing system, Leica’s manual focusing nails your shot each time and every time. if you know what you’re doing the difference between how fast a standard DSLR can auto-focus and you can manually on a Leica M-E can be measured in a fraction of a second!

The Bad

For some reason Leica dropped the USB port from the Leica M-E. Big deal? No way. If you know how to transfer images from a compact SD card via a card reader you’re never going to miss it. But, on the good side you get yourself a $1500 discount!

Burst rate is only 2 fps and even then when you’re using faster shutter speeds. Buffer rate is a meager 8 frames max. Clearly this camera is not designed for sports or action photography.

Maximum flash sync speed is 1/180th of a second.

Similar Products

Definitely the Leica M9 is the nearest rival for the Leica M-E. But on the downside it is a good $1500 pricier than the Leica M. A slightly purist choice, that is if you’re inspired by the works of legendary street photographers like Garry Winogrand, Ansel Adams or Henri Cartier-Bresson the Leica M9 Monochrome is a good alternative, though no real comparison should be drawn as it has no color filters and it is pricier too compared to the M-E at around $8000. There was a limited supply of the legendary Nikon S3 back in 2000. Also known as the Nikon S3 2000, it is an excellent choice. However, there are not too many too find at this moment and they could fetch a fortune in an auction or you may have to sale of some of your body parts in order to afford it.

Should I buy it?

If you’re cost conscious, think in terms of “camera per dollar” then Leica and for that matter any other rangefinder is not for you. This is definitely for two people with two distinct pursuits in life, either for collection or for self gratification. Leica cameras serve both pursuits. But in this case we are bothered only about the second pursuit and even then only the ones who consider them ‘purists’. The M-E is definitely for those who have come a long way from half-pressing and letting the camera decide for them what’s best. It is a camera for serious photographers who prefer to focus with their eyes letting the camera do only the bit that’s asked from it.

Now that you realize what is capable of achieving using a Leica rangefinder here is the million dollar question, is the M-E worth it? Here is a hypothetical situation. Let’s say you’re looking for the Leica M9 which currently retails around $7000. If you’re given a chance to buy the same minus the USB slot and the viewfinder pre-selector button, for a price of only $5500 would you be interested? The frame line pre-selector button allows you to check what the frame line would be should you choose to mount a lens, without actually mounting it. The only utility for the later, as my assessment goes is to confirm a frame line so that you know what you’re going to get once you mount a lens. Kind of too fancy bordering on laziness rather than a real utility. Other than these two features rest of the camera is just the Leica M9 but in a Leica M-E case. You have my answer.

Leica announces medium format S-System with 37MP body and lenses

Leica S

The synthesis of optimum imaging quality, perfect handling and outstanding speed

Solms, Germany (September 17, 2012)  Leica Camera presents a new camera in the Leica S- System portfolio, a revolutionary digital camera concept to meet supreme professional requirements. The next generation in the successful line, the Leica S offers increased imaging quality and sensor sensitivity, predictive autofocus, higher speed and improved handling. Numerous enhanced functions contribute to the camera’s further acceleration and greater security of the professional photographic workflow. In addition to the new camera body, three lenses have been added to the S-System portfolio, significantly expanding the capabilities of the system: the Leica Super-Elmar-S 24 mm f/3.5 ASPH. super-wide, the Leica Vario-Elmar-S 30-90 mm f/3.5-5.6 ASPH. and the Leica TS-APO- Elmar-S 120 mm f/5.6 ASPH. tilt/shift lens.

“This expansion of the system is further confirmation that the dedicated digital concept of the S- System sets new standards in the world of medium format photography while providing the speed and handling of a 35 mm SLR,” said Stephan Schulz, Head of Professional Imaging at Leica Camera AG. “In terms of its rugged resilience, reliability and versatility, the new Leica S is the first choice for photographers who refuse to make compromises.”

New Image And Sensor Board For More Quality And Higher Speed
One of the most remarkable innovations in the Leica S is its new image and sensor board. The upgrade of these electronic components has led to the increased imaging quality of the Leica S, as well as the improvement of noise characteristics, natural color rendition and the precision of its white balance. The latter function has now been extended to include a ‘Grey Card’ option that allows photographers to shoot a subject with a neutral grey area, such as a grey card, and define the white balance determined as a reference for all following photos to ensure a consistently precise color mood from beginning to end of a shoot. The extended sensitivity range of the sensor at both ends gives photographers more freedom of choice in the selection of exposure parameters. For example, the lower basic ISO setting of 100 allows longer working at maximum aperture in extremely bright conditions, while the maximum sensitivity of ISO 1600 enables them to capture noise-free images even under difficult lighting conditions. In addition, the double buffer memory of 2 GB and support of transfer rates up to 166 MB/s enables photographers to shoot continuous sequences of more than twice as many (up to 32) consecutive images in RAW format, at a full resolution of 37.5 MP. There is no limit to the number of consecutive images that may be captured in JPEG format. Images can be saved parallel to the original files in a choice of 37.5, 9.3 and 2.3 megapixels to provide photographers with a preview of the work in progress straight from the camera at the desired resolution.

Fast, Predictive Autofocus Module For Subjects In Motion
The upgraded autofocus module not only increases the speed, but also enhances focusing precision. In combination with its fascinating imaging quality, the Leica S sets new standards for professional action photography. To ensure that moving subjects remain sharp and can be swiftly tracked, the Leica S features a predictive autofocus. The camera compares past movements of the subject and computes the location of the subject at the time of exposure. The autofocus locks on to this computed point before the shutter release is pressed.

GPS System And Leveling Aid For Precision And Uncomplicated Workflows
The Leica S is the only professional camera to feature an integrated GPS module that can add the geographical positioning data of the exposure location to the Exif data of an image whenever necessary. This function allows the precise synchronization of the system time (internal clock) for any worldwide location where satellite signals can be received. With software (the professional image administration and processing tool, Adobe® Photoshop® Lightroom® 4 is supplied with the camera), every image can be shown on a map and tagged with a location name that can be used to locate the image in the future. The new dual-axis leveling aid (spirit level) displays its readout in the viewfinder to allow photographers to align the subject with absolute precision in the horizontal and vertical plane without the need for external aids.

Optimized Handling
The monitor screen offers a resolution of 920,000 pixels, a 3″ diagonal and full sRGB color space, as well as increased contrast and brightness to allow for greater precision when assessing images. The glass covering plate of the monitor screen is manufactured from tough, scratch-resistant Corning®Gorilla®Glass. The increased viewfinder coverage of 98 percent, additional information displayed in the viewfinder, optimization of the camera menu and a softer rubber coating for better grip all make the new camera easy to handle. Significantly faster navigation in the camera menu is now possible with the new integrated joystick control located on the back. Greater security in the control of studio flash systems is afforded by the new LEMO flash sync socket.

Advantages Of The S-System
The new Leica S possesses all the standard quality characteristics of the S-System including the large (30 x 45 mm) Leica Pro Format sensor and its microlens layer that guarantees consistently uniform brightness from corner to corner. Resembling all S-Lenses, the camera is extremely rugged and sealed against environmental influences such as dust and rain. The unique dual shutter concept offers photographers the choice of using the camera’s fast focal plane shutter or the central shutter of CS-version lenses that allows flash sync at shutter speeds up to 1/1000th of a second. The eight Leica S-System lenses currently available (five of which will also be available with a central shutter) offer photographers all focal lengths and a first-class tilt/shift lens. Furthermore, a wide range of medium format lenses from a number of other manufacturers can easily be mounted on the Leica S using adapters such as the S-Adapter H, which allows the use of Hasselblad H-Lenses with full support of all functions including autofocus, central shutter control and automatic aperture control.

Photographers never face compromises when they choose a Leica S due to details such as secure cable connections, multifunctional memory card slots, further improved energy efficiency and scratch resistant monitor glass. The Leica S stands alone as an ideal and extremely reliable tool for achieving maximum quality results both in the studio and on location, under even the most unfavorable conditions.

Together with the new Leica M, the Leica S marks the beginning of a new era in Leica’s product naming policy. In future, Leica M and S model names will omit the number suffix to emphasize the long-term significance and enduring value of the respective systems.

Purchase of the Leica S includes the Leica Protection Plan, offering photographers an extended warranty for a period of three years, as well as a replacement camera during repair. The Leica S will be available from select Leica dealers, including the Leica Store Washington DC, beginning in December 2012.

Sigma 70-300mm F/4-5.6 DG Macro Lens

Sigma 70-300mm F/4-5.6 DG Macro Lens

Product Summary

Overview

Retailing at only $220 the Sigma 70-300mm F/4-5.6 DG Macro lens is one that a wild life photographer would be interested to get a look in. there are currently five 70-300mm f/4-5.6 lenses being sold by Sigma and this one is by far the cheaper of the lot together with the 70-300mm F4-5.6 DG Macro (Motorized).

Many of the features that you would normally expect in a tele lens is absent in this one, making it a tough choice and a big trade-off between price and performance. When you turn the focusing or the zoom ring the front elements of the lens rotates and extends making it neither discreet nor suitable for a circular polarizer to be used. This lens has a big manual focusing ring which dominates the barrel externally. There are no full-time manual focusing available. Auto-focusing performance of the lens is nothing out of the ordinary. If you’re used to something like a HSM (Hyper-sonic Motor) lens from Sigma then expect a bit of noise when the AF motor engages.

An interesting feature of these lenses is the macro mode which gives it a magnification ratio of 1:2. So if you’re interested in a bit of macro photography this lens can provide you with a little bit of opportunity for that (technically unless the lens gives 1:1 magnification it cannot be termed as a macro lens). it can be engaged when the lens has reached 200mm which allows the lens to focus closer.

The construction of the lens includes 14 elements including one SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass element arranged in 10 groups. External dimensions of the lens are 3.0 x 4.7” and weight is 530 grams.

Sigma 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 II DC OS HSM Lens

Sigma 18-200mm f:3.5-6.3 II DC OS HMS Lens

Product Summary

Overview

The Sigma 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 II DC OS HSM replaces the older Sigma 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 lens. One difference is the introduction of the new FLD (Fluorite Low Dispersion) glass element in the lens. This ensures that the lens has near capable performance to that of a fluorite glass element at the same time costing a significant amount less. Another improvement is the introduction of the Optical Stabilization (OS) technology which stabilizes the image when images are shot.

Sigma brands this as a multi purpose lens. For travelers who would like to travel light the 3.5” long powerful zoom lens can cover most of their photography needs. At a MSRP of $720, the lens is a fair choice if you can digest the soft corners at most of the times. If you’re using Nikon DSLR then the Nikon mount of this lens comes with HSM (Hyper-sonic motor) which ensures quiet auto-focusing. For Canon and even Sigma mounts the lens has only the micro-motor type.

The angle of view of the lens is 76.5-8.1˚ (this lens is designed only for APS-C DSLRs) and the zoom is equivalent to 27-300mm comparable to a 35mm format.

The Sigma 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 II DC OS HSM has a total of 18 lens elements arranged in 14 groups including one Super-Low dispersion (SLD) glass element and three aspherical elements to combat spherical aberrations. The external dimensions of the lens are 3 x 3.5” and the weight of the lens is 600 grams. The 7 blade diaphragm creates a wide f/3.5 and a narrow f/22 aperture. The filter size specification is 62mm.

Canon Unveils Two New Printers Canon Pixma Pro-10 & Pixma Pro-100

Canon PIXMA PRO 10 Printer

Continuing The Legacy Of Imaging Excellence: New Canon PIXMA PRO-series Printers Produce Superb Black-And-White And Color Images

LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y., September 17, 2012 – Canon U.S.A., Inc, a leader in digital imaging solutions, today announced the newest additions to the PIXMA PRO-series of 13-inch inkjet printers, the PIXMA PRO-10 and PIXMA PRO-100. Built with the same quality of output and design as the flagship PIXMA PRO-1 Professional Inkjet Printer, these two models produce excellent black-and-white and color prints to help ensure what was captured through a camera lens is reproduced exactly as it was envisioned on paper. Canon has also worked to improve the printing workflow for end-users with the new Print Studio Pro plug-in software, wireless connectivity and faster printing speeds.

“The additions of the PIXMA PRO-10 and PIXMA PRO-100 printers to the PIXMA PRO-series lineup provide photographers with a number of options to satisfy their printing needs,” said Yuichi Ishizuka, executive vice president and general manager, Imaging Technologies & Communications Group, Canon U.S.A. “Canon is the only company that provides a complete imaging system from input to output for professionals, and these new printers along with the new EOS 6D Digital SLR Camera further illustrate our commitment to creating new technologies to help users get the most out of their images.”

PRO Mode

Canon has created and included a PRO Mode for each of the new printers which maps color gamut for optimum balance of brightness and saturation. This color mode also helps adjust colors by taking into consideration the characteristics of human perception. The technology helps to create prints that accurately reflect the image as seen on a monitor without needing a high level understanding of color management. In early 2013, this feature is expected to be available as a firmware upgrade for users of the PIXMA PRO-1 printer.

Quality of Results

The two new models complete the professional class of printers offered by Canon and deliver photographic prints of professional quality with predictable color, smooth tonal transitions and precise detail. The Canon PIXMA PRO-10 printer utilizes a 10-ink tank system with LUCIA pigment-based inks to produce a wide color gamut and exceptional print longevity on fine art and glossy paper. The printer employs three monochrome inks, including Matte Black, to generate deep, dark blacks when using fine art paper. A key component of the PIXMA PRO-10 is the addition of Chroma Optimizer to the ink system to further improve the quality of the print. In addition to increasing the color gamut, this feature helps to enhance the black density when printing on glossy media types. After the ink is laid down, the printer applies the Chroma Optimizer to help eliminate gloss differential that at times can reflect light irregularly, resulting in a more uniform and aesthetically pleasing print on glossy-or semi-gloss type surfaces.

The eight-color, Canon PIXMA PRO-100 printer utilizes the ChromaLife 100+ dye-based ink system1 to produce vibrant, saturated colors on fine art and glossy papers. Three monochrome inks are included to help enhance black density and produce accurate prints with smooth tonal gradations.

To help achieve accurate prints, each printer utilizes the Optimum Image Generating System which calculates the best results for each print mode and paper type. This system helps improve color reproduction, tonal gradations and black density while reducing graininess and metamerism. Professionals will notice the benefits of this system when the image is printed and exhibited exactly as it was envisioned.

Canon PIXMA PRO 100 Printer

Quality of Experience

To help deliver a streamlined print workflow to aspiring and professional photographers, Canon is introducing the Print Studio Pro plug-in software specifically for use with the new PIXMA PRO-series printers. As part of the design process for this software, Canon interviewed a wide range of photographers at various professional levels to help determine what users want out of a printing application. The Print Studio Pro software is designed to provide a simple and seamless photo printing solution from a number of applications such as the Canon Digital Photo Professional and Adobe’s Photoshop, Photoshop Lightroom and Photoshop Elements. The Print Studio Pro user-interface has been designed to maximize ease-of-use with a number of options to adjust the page formats and layouts, accommodate for different user preferences and manage a number of variables including color management and printer settings.

Because of the partnership Canon has established with major paper manufacturers, a significant number of ICC profiles are expected to be available at the time these new printers start shipping. Earlier this year, Canon expanded its media lineup for the PIXMA PRO-series to better meet the needs of professionals with Photo Paper Pro Luster, which delivers vivid colors, sharp details, and generates stunning black-and-white output with rich blacks and smooth tonality. The paper is designed to provide a consistent look and color when viewed under various light sources and can help increase productivity through fast drying times and easy handling.

To further amplify the overall efficiency of both new models, Canon has added wireless connectivity, a first for the PIXMA PRO-series of Canon printers. Ethernet capabilities have also been included allowing multiple users to print high-quality images from one machine. Whether working on a project in a professional studio or as a student, users will find these connectivity options useful for completing projects in a timely manner without sacrificing image quality.

Both printers deliver impressive print speeds over and above previous generations of PIXMA PRO models through optimized carriage speed, the addition of the three monochrome ink tanks and maximum nozzle counts. As a result, the PIXMA PRO-100 printer can produce a 13″ x 19″ high-quality color, bordered image in 90 seconds2 and create a high-quality, bordered black-and-white print 5.4-times faster than previous models, or just under three minutes2. In five minutes and 20 seconds2, the PIXMA PRO-10 printer can produce a 13″ x 19″ high-quality color, bordered image in color or a black-and-white. This increase in speed will help users improve productivity and better budget the time it takes to complete a project.

The estimated selling price of the PIXMA PRO-10 and PIXMA PRO-100 Professional Inkjet Printers are $699 and $4993.

Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM Lens

Sigma 17-50mm f:2.8 EX DC OS HSM Lens

Product Summary

Overview

Designed for the smaller sensor APS-C DSLRs only the Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM (Amazon | Adorama | B&H) is Sigma’s standard zoom lens with a fast f/2.8 aperture. The lens features Sigma’s Optical Image Stabilization (OS) technology which ensures the camera is steady even at four stops lower shutter speeds. Additionally HSM (Hyper-Sonic Motor) technology quiets down the auto-focusing noise and enhances the AF performance. Additionally for users who have a Pentax or Sony model the viewfinder will be able to give them an optically stabilized image when using this lens, a rarity among standard zoom lenses. Sigma has also provided FLD glass elements. FLD stands for Fluorite Low Dispersion and is a technology that gives comparable to fluorite glass element performance for suppressing color fringing while costing much less. Additionally the presence of two glass mold and one hybrid aspherical lenses takes care of spherical and other aberrations. To correct flares and ghosting the lens has super multi layer coating.

The build quality of the lens is some what less than what should be befitting the high standards set by Sigma’s EX lenses. However it is still quiet good. A mono-cam setting (single tube) is used for extending the lens at the telephoto end. Turning the manual focus ring does not rotate the front elements of the lens. This is critical if you’re shooting pictures and prefer using circular polarizer.

The lens construction is made up of 17 elements arranged in 13 groups. The lens diaphragm is made up of 7 blades and it can stop down to f/22. The external dimensions of the lens are 3.3×3.6” and it weighs 565 grams. Check also Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC OS | Sigma 50-150mm f/2.8 DC OS HSM

SLR Magic to exhibit Four New lenses at Photokina 2012

SLR Magic HyperPrime 23mm F1.7 WITH Fujifilm X

SLR Magic to show 25mm T0.95, 35mm T0.95, 35mm T1.4, and 23mm F1.7 prototype lenses at Photokina 2012

Hong Kong, September 15th, 2012.

During Photokina 2012 in Cologne, Germany (September 18-23), SLR Magic will present attractive new CINE products as well as its Toy Lenses, all of the highest technical quality. Among them, will be a new SLR Magic CINE 35mm T1.4 lens in stores by the end of 2012. SLR Magic would like to invite all participants of Photokina fair held in Cologne to visit our stand in Hall 3.1 B059.

SLR Magic will present its entire range of camera lenses, cine lenses, spotting scopes, and camera accessories during Photokina.

A major attraction is a high-performance mirrorless format cine lens with manual focus. With a focal length of 35mm and aperture of T1.4, this lens joins the family of cine lenses designed for demanding users. The reason why the 35mm T1.4 lens is not in the HyperPrime series is because T1.4 is not the fastest speed we can design for this 35mm lens.

Ever since the release of the HyperPrime CINE 12mm T1.6 lens, cinematographers have been requesting for a set of HyperPrime CINE lenses. In addition to our new CINE 35mm T1.4 lens, we will also showcase our 25mm T0.95 (MSRP: US $649) in mFT and 35mm T0.95 (MSRP: US $1,249) in mFT, X-mount and E-mount concept lenses that are based on the optical design of the HyperPrime CINE 50mm T0.95 lens.

Due to difficulty to source a particular material to manufacture the HyperPrime 23mm F1.7 for E-mount announced on December 8th 2011 it was discontinued within 3 months of launch. During this time, we have re-designed the lens, increasing image quality across the frame yet keeping the lens size and price similar to the original. The new design also supports mFT and X mount cameras.

All details concerning the optical type and physical size of the lens will be published at a later date. The SLR Magic CINE 35mm T1.4 lens in mFT, X-mount and E-mount (MSRP: US $279) will be introduced for sale in December 2012. The SLR Magic HyperPrime 23mm F1.7 (MSRP: US $399) in mFT, X-mount and E-mount will be introduced for sale in February 2013.
