Overview
The 1 NIKKOR 18.5mm f/1.8 (Amazon | Adorama | B&H) is one of the latest in the Nikkor 1 series lenses made for the Nikon 1 series digital cameras. One of the fastest lenses in the Nikon’s stable, the 1 NIKKOR 18.5mm f/1.8 has a very fast aperture suitable for low light photography. It is also suitable for creating a soft out of focus background for your portraiture or close up photos. The 18.5mm converts to what is a 50mm on a 35mm format sensor and thus produces results which are exactly what the human eye sees in front of it. The 1 NIKKOR 18.5mm f/1.8 has a very close focusing distance of only 8.4”. As such this lens is also suitable for the purpose of close-up photography.
Nikkor’s AS (Aspherical) elements ensures that the lens has a suppressed spherical aberration and much better color contrast in the final images. The widest f/stop is f/1.8 and the lens can stop down to f/16 at the narrowest end. The 1 NIKKOR 18.5mm f/1.8 has a maximum angle of view of 46°40”. It has 8 lens elements and arranged in 6 groups. The lens diaphragm has 7 rounded blades contributing to the beautiful soft bokeh.
The 1 NIKKOR 18.5mm f/1.8 takes a filter of 40.5mm. The dimensions of the lens is 2.2×1.41 (diameter x length). The overall weight of the lens is 70 grams making it one of the lightest in the 1 Nikkor series. The lens ships with a LC-N40.5 front cap for the lens and a LF-N1000 rear lens cap.

Overview
The Tamron AF 28-300MM F/3.5-6.3 XR Di VC (IF)(Amazon | Adorama | B&H) encompasses a number of their key technologies including the XR (Extra-Refractive Index) glass elements which ensures that the lens can bend light (refraction) at a more acute angle leading to a reduced length to travel and as a result a suppressed chromatic aberration. This technology also ensures that the barrel length can be kept at a minimum.
Di lenses from Tamron are designed for the larger full frame sensor DSLRs however they can also be used on a crop body with a crop factor of 1.5x (Nikon) or 1.6x (Canon). The field of view decreases slightly when mounted on an APS-C body. The minimum focusing distance of the lens is 19.3” with a magnification ratio of 1:3. This is not a true macro lens however works just enough for some close-up shots if you’re interested in it. The best utility of the lens is its tele-photo focal length which is augmented by the fact that the lens comes with VC (Vibration Control). This is a true wild life photographer’s lens. however for some one who wants a faster and more consistent aperture, some of Canon’s L series f/4 lenses would be better suited because at the tele end the Tamron stops down to f/6.3.
The lens has a total of 18 elements arranged in 13 groups and incorporates XR and LD (Low-dispersion) glass elements for better color saturation and sharpness. The overall weight of the lens is 555 grams and it takes a filter of size 67mm.

Tamron SP 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5 Di II Lens
Product Summary
- Model name: Tamron SP 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5 Di II
- Focus Type: Autofocus / Manual
- Format : APS-C / Crop Sensor
- Purchase options: Amazon
| Adorama | B&H
Overview
The Tamron SP 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5 Di II has one of the fastest f-stop for APS-C format lenses in the market. Though to a large extent Tamron is actually catching up when they released the 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5, they had a winner in their hands. Designed for the smaller image circle of APS-C format DSLRs, the SP 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5 gives an equivalent field of view what a 15-36mm lens would give on a full frame DSLR.
A wide angle perspective is often required when shooting landscape for capturing a dramatic scene. It is also required when shooting architecture especially from tight locations. Capturing group shots again from tight corners are also the perfect moment when one should reach for a wide angle lens. The SP 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5 performs in all these conditions. It has a maximum angle of view of 108˚.
The lens diaphragm is made up of 7 rounded blades and that allows for the lens to shoot nice and soft bokeh when set to a wide aperture. It can also stop down all the way to f/29 (at 24mm). However for a lens so wide vignetting and flares & ghosting has been well controlled.
The overall construction of the lens consists of 12 elements including two LD (Low Dispersion) glass elements, 1 HID (High-refractive index) element and 4 aspherical elements arranged in 9 groups. The lens takes a filter size of specification 77mm and weighs 406 grams. Good news if you use a circ. polarizer as the front end does not rotate when focusing. Available at Amazon | Adorama | B&H

Tamron SP 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di II Lens
Product Summary
- Model name: Tamron SP 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di II
- Focus Type: Autofocus / Manual
- Format : APS-C / Crop Sensor
- Purchase options: Amazon | Adorama | B&H
Overview
The Tamron SP 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di II offers slightly wider field of view at 17mm than a standard 18-55mm kit lens that has almost become a standard for most photographers around the world. However on the other end the lens has tag smaller field of view on the tele end at only 50mm. But it more than makes it up with a fast constant aperture of f/2.8 which allows the lens to capture moments in relatively less quantity of light. However there may be slight problems of vignetting when used at f/2.8. Stopping down always helps and in this case increases the sharpness of the images considerably. This lens is perfect as a everyday lens for most shooting needs except for where a tele-lens is a necessity.
Designed for the smaller image circle of an APS-C crop sensor based DSLR, the lens comes in compatible mounts for Nikon, Canon, Sony and Pentax. Mounted on a crop body the lens has the same field of view as that of a 24-75mm lens mounted on a full free DSLR. The lens comes with a manual focusing ring which is mounted in from of the larger zoom ring. The focusing ring rotates during auto focusing and is something that can be bothering for someone who is used to a lens which is non-rotating and with a non-rotating full-time manual feature.
The lens has a total of 16 elements arranged in 13 groups. The diaphragm of the lens consists of 7 rounded blades allowing it to stop down to f/32. The weight of the lens is 440 grams and it takes a filter of size 67mm. Available at Amazon | Adorama | B&H

Overview
Tamron SP 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di II VC Lens
The Tamron SP 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di II VC lens scores over its sister the Tamron SP 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di II lens in having a optical stabilization. Designed for the reduced image circle (RIC) of an APS-C crop sensor, the 17-50mm offers a field of view of 24-75mm equivalent on a full frame DSLR. Tamron’s image shake offers optical stability and a slower shutter speed possibility (VC). Slower the lens down impacts the hand-holdability of a lens and this is where the 17-50mm f/2.8 lens works wonder. Even in low light conditions the lens is simply fantastic, capturing subjects in tricky or low light conditions. No need to crank up the ISO and welcome noise on a small sensor.
However the lens does not offer the same degree of sharpness as other lens from this segment especially from the more illustrious Nikon and Canon stables. The lens sharpness is soft at 17mm when using f/2.8. Sharpness improves however when the lens is stopped down.
The lens construction constitutes a total of three compound aspherical elements, special LD (Low-dispersion) glass elements and BBAR coating which is used to increase color saturation, reduce ghosting and flares. a total of 19 lens elements arranged in 14 groups make up the lens. The diaphragm of the lens constitutes 7 blades allowing it to give a wide constant f-stop of f/2.8. Additionally it can stop down all the way to f/32. The filter size specification of the lens is 72mm and it has a weight of 540 grams. Available at Amazon | Adorama | B&H

Tamron 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 XR Di II Lens
Product Summary

Overview
An 18-200mm lens has a very interesting perspective. It enables a photographer to capture photographic subjects at a fair distance while also allowing him to use the wide angle of view to zoom out and then capture stunning wide angle perspectives, natural landscapes and or majestic sunsets. The fact that the Tamron 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 lens comes with the latest XR and LD glass elements makes the lens extremely well performing with reduced flares and increased color saturation.
The lens is designed for the smaller APS-C DSLRs (Di II Lens) and offers an equivalent field of view of a 27-300mm lens mounted on a 35mm camera (Nikon cameras have a 1.5x crop factor, Canon cameras with their 1.6x crop factor gives a slight more cropped view). The lens is not compatible with full frame DSLRs. At f/3.5 the lens is bright however for those looking for a faster aperture when shooting wide angle would be disappointed.
A total of 15 elements including three hybrid aspherical elements and two low-dispersion elements, arranged in 13 groups. The fact that this lens does not have image stabilization built-in can be a deal breaker. For a lens of this range image stabilization is a must else one would have to keep carrying a tripod if one wishes to shoot fully zoomed in. The lens has filter specification of 62mm and it weighs 405 grams. The lens diaphragm is made of 7 rounded blades. Available at Amazon | Adorama | B&H

Overview
Tamron 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 XR Di II PZD Lens
Designed for APS-C sensor based smaller bodied DSLRs the Tamron 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 XR Di II PZD has an image circle optimized for such cameras. It offers the same field of view as a 27-405mm lens mounted on full frame DSLR (15.x Nikon mount). Please note that the lens will not work on a full frame DSLR.
This lens encompasses Tamron’s Vibration Correction (VC) feature which is imperative for a lens of such high focal length. This lens can be used for shooting wide angle landscapes, zooming in 15x to capture subjects from a far away distance without any blur. Because of its vast reach the lens is ideal for most travelers who would probably mount one of these on their DSLRs and never take it off again.
This lens also encompasses Tamron’s piezoelectric auto-focus drive motor. This advanced ultrasonic auto-focusing mechanism makes the lens silent and quick during auto-focusing. Advanced technologies culminates in a result that is less in weight than many of its compatriots and competitors out their in the market.
Performance wise the fast f/3.5 aperture is suitable for most lighting conditions and is sharp all throughout. However if you’re looking for a lens that is faster then probably you should look for a wide angle prime rather than wide-tele zoom lens rather than this one.
The lens is very versatile allowing for a minimum focusing distance of all 19.3” throughout the lens’ focal length range. The lens takes a filter of size 62mm and its weight is 450 grams. Available at Amazon | Adorama | B&H

Product Summary
- Model name: Tamron SP 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di
- Focus Type: Autofocus / Manual

Overview
Designed for the discerning photographer this Di lens from Tamron fits the larger image circle of a full frame DSLR as well as fitting a crop body should you choose to use this with one. The Tamron SP 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di has a slightly shorter wide angle compared to the 24-70mm go to lens also from Tamron. However at the longer end the lens offers a slightly better deal. Like the SP 24-70mm Di VC USD lens this one also has a fast constant aperture of f/2.8. Designed to match the rigors and demands of a professional photographer seeking nothing but the best this lens proudly carries the SP tag, a mark of its build quality.
Tamron’s XR (extra-reflective index) glass elements together with the LD (low-dispersion) elements offers excellent suppression against color fringing, flares and ghosting. The lens has a total of 16 elements arranged in 14 groups. The barrel length is however very short and at only 92mm may appear misleading to its construction and wide aperture. This is however because of the presence of XR elements.
Mounted on a full frame, the maximum angle of view of the lens is 75˚. The 7 blade diaphragm of the lens stops down all the way to f/32 apart from the ability to open at f/2.8 constantly throughout the focal length. The lens ideal for low light photography and thanks to the presence of IF (Internal Focusing) is discreet when being adjusted. The lens is designed for full frame users who want an everyday go to lens for a variety of shooting requirements. Available at Amazon | Adorama | B&H

Tamron SP 70-200mm F/2.8 Di LD (IF) Lens
Product Summary
- Model name: Tamron SP 70-200mm F/2.8 Di LD (IF)
- Focus Type: Autofocus / Manual
- Format : Full Frame / APS-C / Crop Sensor
- Purchase options: Amazon | Adorama | B&H
Overview
The Tamron SP 70-200mm F/2.8 Di LD (IF) is a true wild life photographer’s delight. A fast constant aperture of f/2.8 across its focal length range of 70-200mm lets the photographer capture subjects at a fair distance. Di lenses from Tamron are designed for the larger image circle of full frame DSLR cameras; however they also fit smaller APS-C cameras and film cameras. APS-C cameras have a crop factor of 1.5x (Nikon) and 1.6x (Canon) and they offer the same field of view as that of a 105-300mm lens mounted on a full frame DSLR.
This lens bears the SP tag, a sign that this lens belongs to the premium category lenses from Tamron. When shooting wild life, lights are never really to your advantage unless you’re trying to capture big game in wide open brightly illuminated areas. Photographers, especially those who try to photograph a lot of birds feel this problem all the time. The fast wide aperture of f/2.8 is ideal for them. It can handle most tricky lighting conditions. It doesn’t have Image stabilizer (IS)or Vibration reduction (VR) like the newer Tamron SP 70-200mm F/2.8 Di VC USD Lens. However hat makes it cheaper as well.
Wide aperture also has a dramatic effect on photos as the background can be blurred out. This soft blurred background or bokeh effect makes portrait shots or close-up shots of wildlife ‘pop’. The Tamron SP 70-200mm F/2.8 Di LD (IF) comes from a distinct pedigree of fast lenses with affordable pricing and lightweight construction. The lens has a total of 19 elements arranged in 16 groups including 3 LD (low-dispersion) elements. 9 rounded blades make up the lens diaphragm with internal focusing elements. The lens weighs 1330 grams.

Overview
The Tamron 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di VC USD is designed for a wild-life, action and sports photography enthusiast. At 300mm the lens offers a fast f/5.6 aperture. Although that is still quick the lens does lose out to some of Canon’s and Nikon’s constant f/4 prime tele lenses. This Di lens is compatible with full frame; crop sensor based DSLRs as well as film cameras. Mounted on a APS-C DSLR the lens offers a field of view equivalent to a 105-450mm lens mounted on a full frame DSLR. as such it gives crop sensor users interested in wildlife and sports photography an amazing reach.
When the lens launched it was the first ever Tamron to feature their fast USD (Ultrasonic silent drive) mechanism. This makes the lens near silent when auto-focusing. It also has full time manual focusing which a lot of professional photographers prefer.
Additionally the lens also encompasses Tamron’s VC (Vibration compensation) feature that stabilizes the lens from any shake when shooting hand-held. For a tele-lens of such long reach it is imperative that the lens has optical stabilization.
The lens has a total of 17 elements including a XLD (Extra low dispersion) glass element arranged in 12 groups. Tamron claims that the properties of the XLD glass elements are equivalent to that of the fluorite elements that are mostly used by Canon in its lens technology. The diaphragm of the lens constituted by 9 rounded blades. The lens weighs 765 grams and uses a filter of 62mm size.

Features
The EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 L IS USM is usable with all EOS digital SLR cameras from Canon both full frame and APS-C. It is also compatible with APS-H size sensor based cameras as well.
Canon has provided ring type USM (Ultra-sonic Motor) technology for silent Auto-focusing. For photographers shooting wildlife with this lens this is a great feature to have. At 300mm it offers full frame users with the range and the stabilization ideal for wild life photography. This L series lenses has been designed keeping in mind the demands of professional photographers working out in the open. Apart from having weather sealed body the lens comes with Fluorine coating to ensure that finger prints and dirt does not stick to it. Canon has provided two UD (Ultra-low Dispersion) elements in the lens which suppresses chromatic aberrations to a great extent. Additionally the focusing elements of the lens are separated from the rest of the optical elements rendering them ‘floating’. It basically means the lens is extremely sharp when focusing from infinity to very close. Chromatic aberrations, which otherwise affect lenses where the rest of the optical elements move along with the focusing group and thus create a curved field do not affect this. The closest focusing distance of the lens is 3.9’ or 1.2 meters and the diagonal angle of view is 34° – 8° 15′.
A total of 19 lens elements make up the construction arranged in 12 groups. The external dimensions of the lens are 3.5” x 5.6” and it weighs 1050 grams. The filter size specification is 67mm.
As part of the L-series range, the EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM is supplied with a lens hood ET-73B and lens case LP1424 as standard. In addition, an optional, dedicated tripod mount C (WII) can be directly attached to the lens. This allows it to be stabilised easily and the camera switched quickly from vertical to horizontal and back, without having to reposition the camera body on the tripod, perfect for fast-paced action with a variety of subjects.

Overview
Some say that the EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L USM is one the finest 70-200mm lens that Canon has ever produced. The fact that a lot of discerning photographers are willing to bet its performance against 200mm primes from Canon shows that the lens has excellent performance. The construction of the lens consists of 18 elements arranged in 15 groups and out of these there are four UD (Ultra-low Dispersion) glass elements. This is what reduces chromatic aberration almost to zero and enhances the sharpness of the pictures produced by the lens. The lens has a fixed f/2.8 aperture, thanks to its 8 blade diaphragm.
In spite of the fact that the lens does not have the Image Stabilization feature the lens is quite powerful even in lowlight condition, thanks to its wide f/2.8 constant aperture across its focal length. This allows the lens to be used in fast action photography with a faster shutter speed than is possible with any other tele lenses of f/4 aperture.
The lens is compatible with both the EF 1.4x II and the 2x II extenders from Canon which immediately gives it a focal length augmentation of 280mm and 400mm respectively on a full frame Canon EOS DSLR. the closest focusing distance of the lens is 4.9’ or 1.5 metering which rules out close-up photography but the lens is perfect for sports, fast-action, wild life and journalistic photography where faster aperture or shutter speed is required. The external dimensions of the lens are 3.3” x 7.6” and it weighs 1310 grams. The filter thread specification is 77mm.

Nikon Celebrates 70 Million Nikkor
TOTAL PRODUCTION OF NIKKOR LENSES FOR INTERCHANGEABLE LENS CAMERAS REACHES SEVENTY MILLION
MELVILLE, N.Y. (June 14, 2012) – Nikon Corporation is pleased to announce that total production of NIKKOR lenses for Nikon SLR cameras and Nikon 1 advanced cameras with interchangeable-lens reached seventy million at the end of May 2012. Moreover, total production of AF-S lenses equipped with the Silent Wave Motor (SWM), the autofocus motor developed by Nikon, has reached thirty million.
Seventy Million NIKKOR Lenses
In 1933, the large-format lens for aerial photography was released as the first NIKKOR lens. After that, lenses for SLR cameras continued to evolve based on Nikon’s own cutting-edge technology. Last year, the new Nikon 1 advanced cameras with interchangeable lenses and the 1 NIKKOR line of dedicated lenses were released to the market. The 1 NIKKOR lenses, which are incredibly compact and lightweight, have inherited all of the optical technology, superior quality, and advanced technology Nikon has cultivated over the years to provide sharp rendering with both still photos and movies. Additionally, the retractable lens mechanisms found in these 1 NIKKOR lenses enable the Nikon 1 cameras to be supremely compact and lightweight.
In October 2011, the production of NIKKOR lenses reached 65 million. Since then, Nikon has continued to actively develop new products under the NIKKOR brand including four 1 NIKKOR lenses with simple designs and various color offerings which are perfectly suited for the ultra-portable, compact and lightweight Nikon 1 J1 and Nikon 1 V1, the first two cameras in the new Nikon 1 series. Additionally, the new FX-format compatible NIKKOR lenses maximize the potential of high-performance cameras such as Nikon’s new flagship digital-SLR camera, the Nikon D4, as well the new Nikon D800 and Nikon D800E which are equipped with image sensors with an effective pixel count of 36.3-million pixels for incredible definition and image quality.
Thirty Million Silent Wave Motion-Equipped NIKKOR Lenses
The Silent Wave Motor (SWM) is an ultrasonic autofocus motor developed by Nikon. Nikon’s SWM converts “traveling waves” into rotational energy to focus the optics in the lenses. This enables extremely smooth, quiet and comfortable autofocusing. The Ai AF-S NIKKOR 300mm f/2.8D IF-ED, released in 1996, was among the first lenses which Nikon adopted the SWM. Since then, the SWM has been built into a total of 60* different lenses of all types including ultra wide-angle lenses, super telephoto DX and FX-format lenses, zoom lenses, and even Micro lenses. It has been adopted by more
than ninety percent of NIKKOR lenses currently manufactured. NIKKOR lenses are used by a wide variety of photographers, from those new to digital-SLR photography to seasoned professionals.
About NIKKOR
The brand name for Nikon lenses, NIKKOR has become synonymous with high-performance, high-quality SLR lenses. The NIKKOR name comes from adding “R”—a common practice in the naming of photographic lenses at the time the name was established—to “Nikko”, the Romanized abbreviation for Nippon Kogaku K.K. In 1933, the large-format lens for aerial photography was released with the name Aero-Nikkor.
NIKKOR lenses incorporate optical technologies that are always ahead of the times. The OP Fisheye- Nikkor 10mm f/5.6 fisheye lens for SLR cameras, released in 1968, was the world’s first lens to incorporate aspherical lens elements. The Ultra Micro-Nikkor 105mm f/2.8 released in 1962 served as the template for projection lenses employed in Nikon IC steppers and scanners that currently boast the world’s highest level of resolution. What’s more, NIKKOR lenses for the latest SLR cameras utilize a number of cutting-edge technologies that originated with the development of IC steppers and scanners, including Nano Crystal Coat, which virtually eliminates internal lens element reflections across a wide range of wavelengths.
From initial design and development, production and quality is controlled in accordance with Nikon’s strict standards. The superior quality of NIKKOR lenses that fully satisfies users is ensured with the highest quality designs and manufacturing, as well as very strict final inspection.
The current NIKKOR brand offers a rich lineup of more than 70 lenses, including fisheye lenses, super wide-angle to super telephoto lenses, zoom lenses, Micro lenses, and PC-E lenses.

Depth of Field
Depth of field in photography is usually described as the amount of the frame that is in sharp focus. When we look at a scene with our naked eye almost everything appears sharp. But that is not the case when we compose the same scene with cameras. Some part of it is blurred out. The more the frame is in sharp focus, the more is the depth of field and vice versa.
Depth of field (DOF) depends on two factors: aperture and distance of the subject from camera (magnification). Wider aperture and closer subject give the shallower DOF.
There is an inverse relationship between the aperture of your lens and the depth of field. Narrower is the aperture more is the depth of field. Usually when you set your lens to f/1.2 or f/1.4 (in a prime lens) or f/2.8 (in a zoom lens) a soft blur is created around the back and front of the subject. This is also known as bokeh. When this happens only a small part of the frame (depending on where you’re focusing) is n sharp focus and the rest is blurred out.
When you reduce the aperture the whole frame starts to get into sharp focus. The narrower the aperture the sharper is the image. As you move from of f/4 or f/5.6 all the way to f/11 and beyond the images get sharper and sharper. The reason is the light rays reflected against the subject and passing through the aperture gets refracted by the front element of the lens and meets the sensor at a precise point creating a sharp image. Narrower the aperture more precise is this meeting of light creating a sharper image and thus bigger depth of field. However, after certain point increasing aperture number will give greater DOF, but you’ll start to loose sharpness. This phenomenon is called Diffraction.
Depth of field also depends upon the kind of lens that you use. A wide angle prime lens offers more soft blur because it has a wider aperture. But if you stop down to f/8 and even narrower, a large depth of field can be created. A wide angle lens reduces the perspective of the subject as it fits in more inside the frame; also know as field of view. As such a hut on the beach will appear smaller than the actual real life size when the picture is finally taken. On the other tele lenses have an effect of increasing the size of the subject on the final image. The higher magnification allows you to capture more detail of the subject but also reduce the field of view and the depth of field.
Great photography is about depth of feeling, not depth of field -Peter Adams
Basic tips to play around with depth of field
Set your aperture to a minimum of f/8 to make sure you have a good platform to start with. Always ensure that you zoom out and exploit the widest limits of your lens, even if you’re using a tele lens. Tele lenses have a narrow maximum aperture so once you have zoomed out completely you may still have an aperture of f/4 to start off. Wide angle lenses can pack in a lot provided you can start at f/8 or even narrower. When shooting landscape or any other subject, never focus on the infinity. Always focus on something closer so that you have a sharp depth of field behind the point where you’re focusing.
Canon Drops The New Rebel T4i/EOS 650D
The New EOS Rebel T4i DSLR Camera Puts The Power And Creativity Of DSLR Stills And Video At Your Fingertips
Silent and Continuous Autofocus in Video, The EOS Rebel T4i Lets People Re-Live Magic Moments Through Stunningly Crisp Video and Incredible Stereo Sound
LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y., June 8, 2012 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging, today announced a new flagship model in its most popular EOS Rebel line, the Canon EOS Rebel T4i Digital SLR Camera. The new EOS Rebel T4i features incredible image quality with an 18-megapixel CMOS (APS-C) sensor, DIGIC 5 Image Processor that helps capture all the action with high-speed continuous shooting of up to five frames per second (fps) and an extended ISO range of 100-12800 (expandable to 25600 in H mode) that gives photographers the opportunities to take the EOS Rebel T4i into more shooting situations than ever before.
The camera includes a revolutionary new autofocus (AF) system to help achieve fast, sharp focus and smooth HD video. The new AF system includes a nine-point all cross-type sensor array, and new Hybrid CMOS AF which achieves fast focus when shooting stills or video in Live View mode. Much to the pleasure of aspiring student filmmakers and parents everywhere, the Rebel T4i features Canon’s new Movie Servo AF providing a quiet, continuous AF during HD video recording when using one of Canon’s newly introduced Stepping Motor (STM) lenses. The silent continuous autofocus when shooting HD video helps ensure the camera only captures the sounds of the scene being recorded. When combined with the camera’s new Vari-angle Touch Screen 3.0-inch Clear View LCD monitor II and intuitive “fingertip” controls, touch-menu and advanced still and video capabilities, the EOS Rebel T4i stands as Canon’s most “consumer-friendly” DSLR to date.
“Our Rebel line of cameras bridges the gap between the casual photographer and someone looking to advance their photography and capture moments in new and creative ways. The EOS Rebel T4i boasts full HD video with AF and touch-screen navigation, inspiring even more photographers and videographers to explore the creative options made possible with DSLR cameras and lenses,” said Yuichi Ishizuka, executive vice president and general manager, Imaging Technologies & Communications Group, Canon U.S.A.
One of the most significant upgrades to the EOS Rebel T4i is a dramatically upgraded AF system including a nine-point all cross-type AF array, with a high-precision dual-cross f/2.8 point at center. The EOS Rebel T4i is the first Canon camera to feature the new Hybrid CMOS AF system which increases AF speed by reducing the camera’s need to “hunt” for focus. The result is fast continuous AF when shooting photos and movies in Live View. Because the camera’s cross-type AF points have two-dimensional contrast detection, the EOS Rebel T4i provides highly accurate focus regardless of your shot composition and ensures great focus no matter where the subject is located in the frame. The addition of the dual-cross point in the center allows for much faster and precise focusing for photographers using high-speed f/2.8 lenses.
Using the touch panel, parents can select their child on the LCD screen and the camera will remain focused on that child while they stay in-frame, ensuring sharp focus in crowds and group shots. The new AF system enables Touch Focus for shooting photos and movies in Live View. To make capturing photos even easier, a Touch Shutter function can also be enabled, whereby selecting a subject on the LCD screen, the camera will instantly take a photo, once focus is locked.
For the first time in a Canon EOS DSLR, the EOS Rebel T4i includes Canon’s new Movie Servo AF for recording video. When used with Canon’s new EF and EF-S STM lenses, the camera can provide smooth and quiet continuous AF while recording video. This technological breakthrough enables the new EOS Rebel T4i to achieve AF while still retaining a DSLR camera’s signature background blur and image quality, producing stunning videos of parties, events, summer vacations or graduations.
When shooting video with Canon’s STM lenses, AF also remains silent, helping ensure you only capture the sound of the scene being recorded. The EOS Rebel T4i features a built-in stereo microphone, a first for the Rebel line, that includes an attenuator function to reduce audio distortion in extra loud situations.
Another Canon first, the EOS Rebel T4i includes a best-in-class Vari-angle Touch Screen 3.0-inch Clear View LCD monitor II featuring 1.04 million dot resolution for unparalleled, clear viewing. The electro-static touch-panel screen is the most advanced that Canon has released to date with multi-touch capabilities allowing photographers to use familiar gestures such as “pinch-to-zoom” and “swiping” to scroll between pictures. Camera operation has been simplified through this feature allowing for Touch Focus or Touch Shutter controls via the vari-angle touch-screen. The vari-angle touch-screen flips out to the left and rotates 180 degrees forward and 90 degrees backward, making tough above-the-head and low-to-the-ground shots easy, and allowing improved views during photo or video capture. That means the overhead shot taken in a crowd or at a graduation march just got a little easier to shoot.
The EOS Rebel T4i helps novice photographers capture great images and video, even in low-light with a range of new and upgraded modes:

Canon’s new shooting modes (Handheld Night Scene, HDR Backlight Control and Multi-Shot Noise Reduction), take multiple pictures, and combine them – in camera – to help capture a wider dynamic range, minimize the image grain or noise, and produce more vivid colors so landscapes and city scenes are as breathtaking as when seen in person.
Families have enjoyed coming home from a vacation or outing with a fun, short Video Snapshot highlight reel shot on their Canon camera to share the full story of their adventure. Now with the EOS Rebel T4i users will also have the option to delete, cut or re-order the clips before exporting the Snapshot album to post or share.
Canon’s Scene Intelligent Auto mode – the “green” mode on the dial – analyzes the scene being shot, taking into account faces, colors, brightness, movement and contrast, to select appropriate camera settings and help produce the best possible image. This mode has been enhanced to deliver the best possible exposure, particularly when shooting in low-light.
To leverage the unique, new shooting functions of the EOS Rebel T4i, such as EOS Full HD Movie with continuous AF, Canon is introducing two new unique lenses, the new EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens and new EF 40mm f/2.8 STM lens. Both new STM lenses includes Canon’s new Stepping Motor technology, which allows the lenses to smoothly and silently focus, and when used in combination with Canon’s new EOS Rebel T4i Movie Servo AF feature, achieve continuous AF while recording video. The new stepping motor technology in both lenses quietly focuses allowing the EOS Rebel T4i’s stereo microphone to only record the sounds of the scene being shot.
The versatile EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens offers the right combination of size, weight, image stabilization and focal length, allowing photographers to capture wide-angle or telephoto photographs and video. This lens is a great option for photographers who may only want to carry one lens with them for both wide landscapes, and close-ups. Appearing for the first time in a Canon EF lens is Dynamic IS (Movie Shooting Mode only) that uses a wide image stabilization correction range to help ensure steady video even when shooting while walking.
The new EF 40mm f/2.8 STM lens offers an ultra-slim, lightweight design that helps photographers avoid overwhelming their subjects with a large lens and to remain discreet in sensitive shooting situations without compromising performance. The “pancake-style” lens boasts an aperture of f/2.8 making it an ideal lens for capturing portrait stills or stunning video. The lens is under an inch thick when attached, making it easy to carry and fit conveniently into a purse or pocket.
The EOS Rebel T4i is also compatible with Canon’s previously introduced GP-E2 GPS Receiver that can be mounted to the camera’s accessory shoe. The GPS unit was created to serve outdoor photographers; it records shooting locations including latitude, longitude and altitude, as well as camera direction. A Logging function can tell how far a photographer has traveled as well.
The EOS Rebel T4i Digital SLR camera will be available at the end of June for an estimated retail price of $849.99 for the body alone; $949.99 bundled with an EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II lens kit and a Movie Kit bundle for $1199.00 with the new EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens.
The new EF 40mm f/2.8 STM lens and the new EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM will also be available separately at the end of June at an estimated retail price of $199.99 and $549.99 respectively.
