Features explained
Nikon’s affordable, compact and lightweight, the D3100 is an entry level DSLR from Nikon featuring a DX format 23.1mm x 15.4mm CMOS sensor. It offers a healthy 14.2 megapixels that should be more than enough for any type of photography.
ISO Range
The D3100 has an ISO sensitivity range of 100-3200. At Hi-1 and Hi-2 modes it is further sensitive to ISO 6400 and 12,800.
Auto-focusing points
When comparing between the D3100 and the entry level offerings from Canon such as the 1100D or the 550D and the 650D, they have only a 9 point auto-focusing system. The D3100 has a 11 point auto-focusing system. Technically though there is a difference, the extra 2 point does not make that much of a difference.
Viewfinder & coverage
The D3100 has an eye-level pentamirror SLR viewfinder. If you’re confused as to what is a pentamirror, then it is a cheaper variety to a more professional option of using a pentaprism. The brightness of the pentamirror viewfinder is less compared to a pentaprism viewfinder. The D3100’s viewfinder gives 95% frame coverage basically it means you capture more than you see through the viewfinder.
LCD Display
The back of the camera is dominated by a 3” 230,000 dots resolution TFT LCD monitor. This is probably where the D3100 really loses out on other entry level DSLRs. While other competitors have migrated to a brighter 921,000 dots or even 1,040,000 dots resolution, this leaves a lot to ask.
AF motor
However the D3100 has a definite disadvantage in the lack of auto-focusing capability with some of the older Nikkor lenses. These lenses don’t have an auto-focusing motor built in and rely on the AF motor of the camera which the cheaper entry level DSLRs like the D3100 does not have. If you’re planning to use a modern G type Nikkor lens or anything else which comes with a built-in auto-focusing motor then this camera is just perfect for you.
Stills & movies
The 14.2 megapixels sensor produces the largest image size (by pixels) of 4,608 x 3,072. The D3100 captures full HD movies in 24 fps. At 720p HD it can capture videos in 30 fps. The built in microphone can capture monaural sounds.
What’s missing & wish list
The camera can surely do with the option for plugging an external microphone jack. Also it does not have a built-in AF motor which makes it impossible to use older AF lenses.
Similar products
Two cameras immediately comes to my mind first is the Canon 550D/Rebel T2i and the 600D / Rebel T3i. They are both available at a similar price of $699. Another camera that should be mentioned is the Sony Alpha a65 which retails also at $699 but has one of the fastest continuous drive of 10 fps.
Should I buy it?
The D3100 is a very light DSLR something that should appeal to first time DSLR users. Although it’s more powerful and much younger sibling (D3200) has been out for a few months, the D3100 is still going strong. I hope Nikon keeps it going for some more time as it is a great camera. The D3100 is a lot lightweight too (455 grams without lens and battery). Comparing with some of the older models such as the D90 or the D40, the D3100 has certainly lost a lot of bulk. A good thing too, if you’re migrating from a compact / point & shoot and the thought of a big bulky DSLR intimidates you. Unless of course you have the money to indulge in a full frame DSLR or your definition of better photography begins with more megapixels then the D3100 is a perfectly good DSLR to begin with. Overview
The Tamron SP 60mm f/2.0 Di II Macro is a macro lens that is optimized for the smaller image circle of an APS-C DSLR. The Dii acronym is used by Tamron for lenses which are optimized for the smaller sensor based DSLR cameras. This SP tagged 60mm prime lens offers the same field of view on a APS-C camera as a 90mm lens would offer on a full frame camera. A fast aperture of f/2 allows the lens to shoot images on macro mode with life like 1:1 reproduction ratio in any lighting conditions. The Tamron SP 60mm f/2.0 Di II Macro lens is inspired by the Tamron Tamron SP 90mm f/2.8 Di Macro Lens, which is designed for the larger sensor full frame DSLR.
This is a true macro lens one which provides a 1:1 image magnification at a close minimum focusing distance of 9.1”. Thanks to its wide aperture it is possible to capture stunning perspectives of small subjects which are impossible using any other tele or medium zoom lenses. However this lens is not only suitable for macro photography but also for portraits as the flexible 90mm field of view captures beautiful portraits with soft blurred backgrounds. Internal focusing elements enable a user to correctly dial in a circ polarizer and never having to readjust the same if focus is changed. The lens diaphragm is designed using 7 rounded blades and the construction constitutes 14 elements in 10 groups. This 400 grams heavy lens uses a filter of 55mm.

Overview
The Tamron SP 90mm f/2.8 Di 1:1 Macro lens offers a life like 1:1 magnification ratio. For a true discerning macro photographer this is a great lens not only because of the magnification but also for its build quality and fast f/2.8 aperture. Sadly, it doesn’t have Vibration Control (VC) like newer version Tamron SP 90mm F/2.8 Di MACRO VC.
The lens quality is good and commensurate to the quality of Tamron’s SP lens line. It enjoys many of the great features of Tamron’s high quality lenses.
While focusing care should be taken that you don’t bump the front elements of the lens on to the subject as the lens extends manifolds even for a short focusing range. The Tamron SP 90mm f/2.8 Di Macro does have a decent auto-focusing feature. However what it lacks in focusing speed and build quality (as some of the Sigma and Canon macro lenses in the same category do score over the Tamron) it overcomes in sharpness.
A lens with such close focusing distance (11.4”) it is obviously a problem if the aperture is stopped down all the way. So ideally a wider aperture is suitable for the purpose of capturing small subjects with the background completely blurred out.
The lens is constructed of 10 elements and arranged in 9 groups. Apart from having a wide f-stop of f/2.8 the lens stops downs all the way to f/32. The lens weighs 400 grams and use a filter of size 55mm. Available at Amazon | Adorama | B&H

Overview
This Di lens is designed for the larger image circle of a full frame DSLR. Having said that the lens is also suitable for smaller APS-C crop sensor based DSLRs as well as film cameras. The Tamron SP 180mm f/3.5 Di LD (IF) 1:1 Macro has a minimum focusing distance of 18.5” and offers a 1:1 magnification ratio. The extended focusing distance ensures that users can shoot from a safe distance and yet capture 1:1 magnification and amazing perspectives to go with it. Additionally internal focusing elements means the lens remain discreet when focusing. With a non-rotating barrel it also satisfies an important requirement for photographers preferring to use a circular polarizer. It also helps that the lens has Filter Effect Control (FEC) which increases the convenience of using a polarizing filter.
A constant aperture of f/3.5 allows the lens to shoot in most lighting conditions. However if you’re looking for something even faster then the Tamron SP 90mm F/2.8 Di MACRO 1:1 VC USD lens is something that you can look at. This 180mm prime lens has an angle of view of 14˚. Apart from its obvious use as a great macro lens it is also suitable as a medium range tele lens. With its fast aperture it is suitable for shooting sports, action and wildlife.
The lens has a total of 14 elements including two LD (low-dispersion) glass elements arranged in 11 groups. The lens diaphragm is made up of 7 rounded blades overall weight of the lens is 920 grams and it uses a filter of diameter 72mm. Available at Amazon | Adorama | B&H

Canon EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens
Product Summary
- Model name: Canon EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS
- Release Date: 26 August, 2008
- Focus Type: Autofocus / Manual
- Format : APS-C / Crop Sensor
- Mounts: Canon EF-S
- Color: Black
- Purchase options: Amazon | Adorama | B&H
Overview
The EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS is a EF-S lens meaning it is designed for the smaller cropped sensor Canon line-up of DSLRs like EOS 650D or Rebel T4i or Kiss X6i. Apart from these 1.6x crop sensors the lens is not compatible with any of the other 35mm and APS-H sensor DSLRs from Canon. The EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS has a very close minimum focusing distance of 1.48’ (0.45 meters) for a tele lens of this range offering a maximum reproduction ratio of 1:4.2. This lens has the focal length equivalent of a 29-320mm lens mounted on a full frame DSLR.
There are a total of 16 lens elements, including 2 UD (ultra-low dispersion glass or Canon’s equivalent of what Nikon says as extra-low dispersion glass) glass elements and 2 aspherical elements, arranged in 12 groups. The diagonal angle of view of the lens is 74° 20′ – 7° 50′.
Auto-focusing performance of the lens is very good and standard at par with the rest of the Canon lenses. There is however no manual focusing override options (no full-time annual focusing). You will need to flick the AF/MF switch in order to focus perfectly. A problem with this lens, just in case you’re into precise annual focusing, is that it turns only 1/8 of the barrel diameter and re-adjusts from infinity to 1.5’. So you will have t very precise when manually focusing. It is best to keep it on auto-focusing for most of the times.
The lens has the external dimensions of 3.1” x 6.40” weighing 595 grams. The filter size specification of the lens is 595 grams. Available at Amazon | Adorama | B&H.

Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens
Product Summary

- Focus Type: Autofocus / Manual
- Format : Full Frame
- Mounts: CanonEF
- Color: Black
- Purchase options: Amazon | Adorama | B&H
Overview
The EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM has an excellent focal length coverage of 28-135mm. It can be used for the purpose of extremely wide frames as well as taking pictures of subjects at a distance. The overall weight of the lens is 540 grams making it an ideal alternative to the EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM. It costs nearly three times more and you have to forego a bit of the tele range for some gain at the wide angle. But it is heavier by 130 grams which means that much more weight to carry around when shooting.
The lens has Canon’s Ring-type USM (Ultra-sonic motor) which ensures that the auto-focusing capabilities are not only accurate but also fast and quiet. Full-time Manual option allows the user to switch from auto to manual focusing just by turning the focusing ring. Closest focusing distance of the lens is 1.6 feet.
The EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM has a total of 16 elements arranged in 12 groups including a molded aspherical glass element and has an external dimension of 3.1″ x 3.8. Overall weight of the lens is 540 grams which is due to the fact that much of the lens is made of either plastic or rubbery plastic (such as the focusing ring). While this does reduce the overall weight this severely compromises the build quality of the lens. If you need a weather sealed lens for outdoor photography then this is not your choice. The lens filter thread specification is 72mm.

Sigma 2x EX DG Tele Converter
Product Summary
- Model name: Sigma 2x EX DG Tele Converter
- Focus Type: Autofocus / Manual
- Format : Full Frame / APS-C / Crop Sensor
- Mounts: Canon | Nikon | Sigma
- Purchase options: Amazon | Adorama | B&H
Overview
Along with the 1.4x EX DG Teleconverter Sigma had also launched the 2x EX DG tele converter which provides compatible Sigma DG lenses with a focal length multiplication of 2x. This tele converter works best with compatible lenses only and Sigma has released a list of lenses that it would work with.
Sigma’s multi-layer coating ensures that the lens has a much suppressed effect from lens flares and ghosts. The use of the teleconverter does not affect the performance of the lenses or their auto-focusing capabilities. In fact the only thing that happens is a slight addition of bulk between the lens and the camera and a loss of one stop of wide aperture. Often when using a medium telephoto lens of say 200 or even 300mm users may be presented with an opportunity where the lens’ focal length range may be ineffective. Having the Sigma 2x EX DG tele-converter at hand means an immediate doubling of the focal length and a great shot. The best thing is that the combination of a teleconverter and a medium telephoto lens is often a lot cheaper than a single super-telephoto lens of say 400 or 500mm.
Sigma recommends that you first attach the lens on to the teleconverter and then mount the teleconverter/lens together on to the DSLR body. Attaching the teleconverter first to the DSLR mount may result it to malfunction.
The lens has a total of 6 elements arranged in 5 groups. The external dimensions of the lens are 68.5mm×52mm and it weighs 235 grams.

Overview
The Sigma 1.4x EX DG is designed to extend the focal length of compatible telephoto lenses with a focal length multiplication factor of 1.4x. not all lenses are compatible with this APO tele converter and that is the reason why Sigma releases a list of the lenses which are compatible with this. Using the teleconverter does not affect the performance of the compatible lenses nor their minimum focusing distance. However aperture is slightly affected as now the widest aperture would be one stop smaller. As such if you’re using a teleconverter and looking to shoot hand held you may have to now use a tripod to accommodate a slightly longer shutter speed. in tricky lighting conditions, fast action will be a problem unless you’re using a f/2.8 lens (which when stopped down one step to f/4 will still be good enough) for shooting pictures.
Sigma has provided multi-layer coating on the teleconverter to reduce flares and ghosts and ensure that the overall performance quality of the lenses specially the superior quality lenses are not affected due to this teleconverter. Sigma in fact suggests the best results are usually obtained using the Sigma DG lenses. Here Dg stands basically for Digital lenses from the Sigma line-up.
The tele converter has a total of 5 elements arranged 3 groups and has external dimensions of 68.5mm×19.5mm. The weight of the converter is 160 grams. Sigma ships these teleconverters with a body and a lens cap together with a carrying case for easy transportation of the teleconverter when not in use. Also check Sigma 2x EX DG Tele Converter

Overview
For macro photography / close-up photography, the availability of light is a major factor. Unfortunately when you’re up-close and personal, it is very difficult to actually get the proper lighting over the subject. Standard ring lights are often blamed for being too flat and as such often not having the desired effect. The Macro Twin Lite MT-24EX offers an unique lighting proposition for macro photography enthusiasts.
The two heads of the Macro Twin Lite MT-24EX can be rotated around the lens, detached from the mount and independently pointed at the subject or used to bounce off light. They can be controlled wirelessly using E-TTL flash control using one or many 550EX and/or 420EX controlling units.
The flash duration can be controlled as per requirement. One can use 1 second burst at 70Hz in E-TTL or in manual modes. With C.Fn 4-1 (on MT-24EX) it is possible to fire a uniform 1 second burst at 70Hz using a Canon EOS digital SLR.
A variety of custom functions are possible on the Macro Twin Lite MT-24EX. Apart from what the camera functions offer there are 9 custom functions on the MT-24EX. Apart from that a host of exposure control modes including variable to ratio control are possible.
Guide number for the Macro Twin Lite MT-24EX is (when both the lights are fully charged and are firing in unison) 72 (feet) / 22 (m), at ISO 100. The Macro Twin Lite MT-24EX is powered by 2 AA batteries (alkaline, lithium, rechargeable Ni-Cd or Ni-MH).

Canon Extender EF 2x III Press Release
London, UK, 26th August 2010 – Canon today unveils two lens extenders designed for its L-series range of new super-telephoto lenses. Designed for photojournalists, nature and sports photographers who need to get close to distant and challenging subjects, the Extender EF 1.4x III and Extender EF 2x III increase the focal length of a lens by a factor of 1.4x and 2x respectively while still delivering superb image quality. To ensure the best possible image quality in all shooting conditions, they also combine enhanced environmental protection, redesigned optics and improved data communication between lens and camera.
Canon professional image quality
Allowing professional photographers to shoot distant subjects without having to carry a number of heavy lenses with them, these new extenders ensure there is no compromise on image quality. The Extender EF 1.4x III features seven lens elements in three groups, and the Extender EF 2x III features nine lens elements in five groups, ensuring improved optical performance. All optical elements use Canon’s Super Spectra coating, reducing ghosting and flare to minimise post-processing requirements. A new Fluorine Coating on the front and rear elements makes marks, such as spots left by water or fingerprints, much easier to clean than standard coatings.
To facilitate the accurate transfer of imaging data between the lens and camera body, both models feature an integrated processor which ensures all focusing, metering and ID information is available – allowing the photographer to capture crisp, well-exposed images. When combined with the latest range of premium Canon L-series lenses, these extenders enable higher AF accuracy compared to previous generations, ensuring professionals achieve perfectly sharp shots, even when capturing moving subjects.
Redesigned for high performance
The Extender EF 1.4x III and Extender EF 2x III have been designed to complement the latest range of L-series lenses, matching their appearance and offering a visible differentiation from previous models. A carefully positioned lens release mechanism also makes it easy to mount the extenders quickly, reducing the time that the camera and lens are exposed to the environment. The extenders offer the exceptional build-quality expected from Canon’s professional products, and are resistant to both dust and water, allowing photographers to use them in extreme shooting conditions.
For convenient transport, the 225g Extender EF 1.4x III and 325g Extender EF 2x III are supplied with a soft case (LP811) and Extender Cap EII.

Overview
The EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM lens has been designed for the purpose of smaller crop sensor Canon DSLR’s such as the EOS 650D, the rebel series etc. When converted to a 35mm format equivalent the lens has a focal length of 28-89mm. The lens has a fast f-stop of f/2.8 which means it allows more light to pass the aperture in any conditions.
This lens can be looked at if you’re looking for a mid-range zoom along with many of Canon’s EF 18-55mm lenses. The lens has a total of 19 elements including 3 aspherical elements and 2 Ultra-low dispersion (UD) elements, arranged in a total of 12 groups. 7 blades make up the lens diaphragm offering it a wide f/2.8 aperture. It can stop all the way down to f/22. The closest focusing distance for the EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM is 1.15’.
The lens comes with Canon’s image stabilization (IS) technology and ring-type USM (ultra-sonic motor). This makes the lens extremely fast and quiet when focusing. Additionally the presence of full-time manual (FTM) means one can use manual focusing anytime even when the lens is trying to auto-focus. In fast focusing scenarios this saves a considerable amount of time not having to flick a switch.
The 17-55mm f/2.8 is entirely made of plastic at least the outside of the lens definitely is. The lens has a specification of 3.284″ x 4.358 ” and it weighs 651.65 grams. It takes a filter size of 77mm. it retails at a price of $1100 or more. Available at Amazon | Adorama | B&H

Overview
The TS-E 17mm f/4L is the widest tilt and shift lens currently available. It’s outstanding image quality across the whole frame, makes it an ideal choice for architectural or landscape photography. Following the same steps of the TS-E 24mm f/3.5L II, the TS-E 17mm f/4L, now includes Canon’s sub-wavelength structure coating (SWC). This Canon’s patented lens coating is specifically designed to reduce ghosting and flare caused by internal reflections to help deliver crisp and clear images.
Canon was the first company to bring a combined tilt and shift lens to the 35mm users, Banking on 36 years experience in this field, Canon has now introduced a new unique functionality to the TS-E 17mm f/4L, which allows users to rotate the direction of the tilt and shift independently of each other. This means greater control over the focal plane, just like the movements of a large format view camera. Canon’s revolutionary tilt and shift mechanism is useful when shooting product shots from a perspective where specific framing and focal plane is needed.
The new lenses have been created, by taking feedback from professional photographers, to deliver highest image quality with high resolution, high contrast and low distortion. The lens uses high-precision asphercial front elements keeps distortion, a common problem in wide angle lenses, to an absolute minimum level, even at the edges of the frame. The TS-E 17mm f/4L also features multiple UD elements to minimize chromatic aberration and optimised focus mechanisms.

Overview
Several aspects of the EF 24-105mm f/4.0 L IS USM lens make it a good choice for discerning Canon DSLR users. The EF 24-105mm f/4.0 L IS USM covers an excellent focal length range of 24-105mm which makes it ideally suitable for not only a wide range of architectural and landscape photos but also suitable for photographing objects at a fair distance. Compatible on all Canon EOS digital SLRs the EF 24-105mm f/4.0 L IS USM has a total of 18 elements arranged in 13 groups including one Super-UD glass element and 3 aspherical elements. The lens has excellent suppression of LCA (lateral chromatic aberration) and spherical aberration.
Canon’s Image Stabilization systems ensure that the camera is steady for up to three stops of slower shutter speeds. Hand holding is that much easier with this lens. Additionally the presence of ring-type USM (ultra-sonic motor) means the lens is fast and quiet when auto-focusing. For those who prefer not to waste time switching from auto to manual focusing the lens has FTM (Full-time manual focusing). For precise focusing the photographer can turn the focusing ring even in AF mode without having to flick a change-over switch.
A close focusing distance of 1.48’ means the lens can be used to shoot reasonably small objects and fill the frame. The lens diaphragm is made up of 8 blades with the maximum wide aperture being f/4. The external dimensions of the lens are 3.3” x 4.2” and it weighs 670 grams. The filter size specification of the lens is 77mm. Also check out the new EF 24-70mm f/4L IS USM Lens. Tamron SP AF 1.4x PRO Teleconverter
Product Summary
- Model name: Tamron SP AF 1.4x PRO Teleconverter
- Focus Type: Autofocus / Manual
- Format : Full Frame / APS-C / Crop Sensor
- Purchase options: Amazon | Adorama | B&H
Overview
Teleconverters are an effective method of increasing the focal length of a lens without necessarily having to break your bank. A combination of a medium telephoto lens and a teleconverter offers a larger focal length reach and is cheaper compared to a single telephoto or super telephoto lens.
The Tamron SP AF 1.4x PRO Teleconverter is meant for most auto-focus and auto-exposure cameras and allows for a lens’ focal length to be magnified by a factor of 1.4x. This teleconverter is designed for use with ideally a f/2.8 lens with a focal length range of 90mm. This makes lenses such as the Tamron SP 70-200mm F/2.8 Di LD (IF) or the Tamron SP 70-200mm F/2.8 Di VC USD ideally suitable to be used with this teleconverter. You can also use the macro lens like Tamron SP 90mm f/2.8 Di 1:1 with this. If used with lenses that have a lower maximum f-stop of say f/4 or even f/5.6 there will be some difference in image quality. There will be no changes in the closest focusing distance of the lens and it shall retain the same. There is however an effective reduction of f-stop which means an f/2.8 lens will become f/4 when mounted on this teleconverter.
The teleconverter has a total of 4 elements arranged in 4 groups. Multiple coating has been provided to reduce flares and ghosts. Chromatic aberrations are suppressed leading to better color saturation and sharper images. The teleconverter is 0.7” in length and 2.6” in diameter. The weight of the teleconverter is 132 grams.

These teleconverters do what any other teleconverters out in the market do, increase the focal length range of the lens, which in this case is by a factor of 2x. Teleconverters are the cheapest way to extend the focal length of your camera lens. This is suitable for capturing stunning images of wildlife, sports or action. They are much cheaper compared to a standard telephoto lens and thus can be easily afforded by most photographers. Interestingly Tamron recommends this product to photographers who use an APS-C DSLR. The teleconverter has no impact on the auto-focus and auto-exposure capabilities of a camera that it is used with.
The Tamron SP AF 2x Pro Teleconverter has a total of 4 elements arranged in 4 groups and comes with multiple coating to ensure that the pictures captured are sharp and devoid of any color fringing, ghosts and flares. However, it is to be ensured that the teleconverter should not be used with a lens that has a wider than 90mm focal length reach. Quality of images will be degraded for any lens that has a slower than f/5.6 aperture. At the same time lenses which are very wide should not be used with this teleconverter. Length of the teleconverter is only 1” and its barrel diameter is 2.6”. Both Nikon and Canon mounts are available.

Features explained
The D3200 is the successor to the very successful and a favorite among a lot of amateur photographers the D3100. The D3200 immediately comes at you as a DSLR that is built to impress. It has a stunning 24.2 megapixels DX format CMOS sensor that captures stunning amount of details and Wireless Connectivity to Mobile Devices
The new 24.2 megapixels DX format CMOS sensor
Nikon has upped the game with the entry level DSLR cameras with this new sensor. However it is not the highest resolution entry level camera in the market. There is at least one Sony model (the a65) that currently retail for the same price of $699 and has a slightly more resolution.
EXPEED 3 image processing
The D3200 uses the same image processing system as the flagship D4 does. Since the ISO sensitivity of the camera is also pretty high 100-6400 (expanded to 12800), the camera needed all the processing power that it could to ensure that the noise can be eliminated and the details are retained. Thanks to the extra processing power and the 24.2 megapixels sensor, the details captured are fabulous. You can make an A4 print of a small square while retaining all the details.
Active D-lighting
Maintaining the details of scenes which has different light sources or when the background is illuminated and the subject is comparatively in the dark, the Active D-lighting feature uses moderation to ensure that the details of both the highlights and the darker areas are preserved.
Videos & stills
The D3200 can shoot large images of size (pixels) 6,016 x 4,000. It can shoot full HD videos at 1080p, 720p and VGA modes. Videos are shot in MOV formats and it can use both H.264 and MPEG-4 advanced video coding. Unlike the D3100 one can plug in an external microphone jack via the 3.5mm pin to record crisp audio.
The viewfinder & the LCD monitor
The eye-level pentamirror has a field of view (FOV) of 95%. The 3” LCD TFT monitor boasts a 921,000 resolution and has a much better and brighter display covering 100% of the frame. The viewing angle is the same as the older D3100 at 160˚.
Wireless shooting
The D3200 is compatible with the WU-1a Wireless Mobile Adapter which allows the camera to be used remotely to shoot images via and for transferring images to a mobile device wirelessly. It is necessary to download the wireless mobile adapter utility from the Google play store (free) for using this function via an Android powered device. Using this utility one can use the camera to shoot pictures by triggering it from the mobile device using its display as the live view mode. Transmitted images can be shared via the Smartphone
Embed location data in pictures shot
Compatibility with the GP-1 GPS Unit allows the camera to embed location data such as latitude, longitude and altitude.
What are missing / wish list
The D3200 just like its older compatriot the D3100 does not have a built-in Auto-Focusing motor. What it means is older lenses which does not have a built-in AF motor can only be used if you manually focus them at all times. All other AF-S and AF-I lenses specially the modern Nikkor G lenses are compatible. Although this is basically an entry level camera the lack of a built-in AF motor is damper. Also missing is a live view histogram which for some strange reasons Nikon is refusing to implement on their entry level DSLRs.
Similar products
Sony’s Alpha A65 also retailing at $699 is a formidable competitor to the D3200. It also has a 24.3 megapixels sensor and because of the Translucent Mirror technology is capable of extremely fast continuous shooting drives of 10 fps. If you need to take pictures of playful kids, pets or some fast action / sports photography then the A65 should be the one to go for in this budget.
Should I buy it?
The D3200 costs a mere $50 more than the older D3100. While for most shooting needs the D3100 is perfectly good camera, if you often print crops of scenes then the extra pixels do make sense. It will retain all the details without making then soft when you blow them up. Again if you need large prints from time to time, the extra megapixels will help you immensely. Ideally for sharing photos on the Internet, you don’t need anything more than 4-6 megapixels and the D3100 is perfect. Available at Amazon | Adorama | B&H

Overview
This EF-S lens is designed for smaller APS-C Canon DSLRs. They are not designed for the purpose of APS-H or the larger full frame 35mm cameras or even for film Canon cameras. The EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS lens has the same focal length range as an 88-400mm lens would have on a 35mm camera. It is one of the cheapest EF-S tele zooms that Canon offers to its discerning APS-C DSLR users.
The lens comes with Canon’s optical stabilization (IS) system. Being a tele lens of such high focal length, it is but imperative that the lens comes with some sort of image stabilization system and Canon does not disappoint with the claimed four stops slower shutter speeds that is possible with this lens while hand holding the camera. The focus adjustments of the lens are done using DC motor.
The EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS has a total of 12 elements including one UD glass element arranged in 10 groups. The presence of the UD glass elements ensures that the chromatic aberrations of the lens are greatly suppressed.
The circular diaphragm of the lens offers a maximum aperture of f/4 at 55mm and a maximum of f/5.6 at 250mm. The diagonal angle of view of the lens is 27° 50′- 6° 15′. In spite of being a tele lens it has a small focusing distance of only 3.6’ at all times. The external dimensions of the lens are 2.8” x 4.3”. The overall weight of the lens is 390 grams.
