Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro Lens

Product Summary

Overview

Currently Canon makes two 100mm macro lenses. As medium zoom macro lenses both the EF100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM and the EF100mm f/2.8 USM are great choices. They both share same excellent image quality and produced sharpest images possible. But the former with its L series build and additional IS system is a better buy for handheld shots.

Canon EF 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6 L IS USM Lens

Product Summary

Overview

The EF 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6 L IS USM is a very versatile lens. It has a stunning focal length range of 28-300mm covering everything from a very wide perspective to telephoto. At 28mm the lens is however not as fast as a prime lens would be so users looking for something faster would be disappointed. However the lens is designed more for its versatility over a longer focal length range.

Canon has provided its Image Stabilization (IS) system in the lens which makes it steady at up to three stops slower shutter speed than in the non IS versions. They have also incorporated the IS 2 mode which ensures that the lens can detect when there is a conscious panning movement and immediately disengages the stabilization system.

Full-time manual focusing ensures that the photographer can precisely adjust the focusing by simply turning the focusing ring. There is also a focusing mode change switch, which when flicked changes the focusing from auto to manual and vice-versa.

The lens has a total of 22 elements arranged in 16 groups. The diaphragm of the lens is made up of 8 rounded type bladed which gives it a maximum aperture of f/3.5. It can also shot down to f/22-38.

The overall construction of the lens is very good. Being an L series lens this has weather sealing which comes handy when being used out in the field. The dimensions of the lens are 3.6” x 7.2” and it weighs 1670 grams. The filter specification of the lens is 77mm. Also check EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS USM Lens

Canon EF 17-40mm f/4.0 L USM Lens

Product Summary

Review

A wide angle lens is often a great one to have. If you love shooting landscapes or prefer to shoot architecture, you will need to have at least one good wide angle lens. They are also great for wedding shots when you need to compose a group shoot fitting the entire extended family in a single frame. There are moments when a wide angle lens becomes an absolute life saver such as a tight area where you don’t have room to step back and maneuver. At 17-40mm focal length range the Canon EF 17-40 mm f/4L USM is a great lens to have. At only $840, it is certainly not going to break the bank to afford and should give you wonderful moments of joy while using the ultra wide angle lens.

Filter thread and movement of the lens elements

The Canon EF 17-40 mm f/4L USM lens has a 77mm thread specification. That means when purchasing filters for this lens one has to look for 77mm as the diameter of the filter. The lens elements are non extending meaning when you turn the focus and or the zoom rings, the elements do not move outside the lens barrel. This is also known as internal focusing. Another advantage of a non rotating barrel, especially when you’re into using circular polarizers and neutral density screw-on filters, is that the filter does not rotate and lose its orientation. Once you have dialed in the circular polarizer or the variable neutral density filter, turning the focusing ring or zoom ring will not affect them any further and your final shot will be exactly as you have seen it through the viewfinder. However when buying a polarizing filter or a neutral density filter you should opt for one that is slimmer than usual to avoid aggravating the problems of vignetting. Being an ultra wide angle lens, the 17-40 mm suffers from vignetting at its widest aperture.

Dispersion and chromatic aberration

Wide angle lenses suffer from problems with light dispersion because of the different angles at which refracted light waves are split into after passing the lens glass. As such after passing through the lens glass different colors travel in differently and converge at different focal planes creating images which appear with overlapping colors at the fringes (color fringing). Lens manufacturers use different systems in order to correct this problem. But glass only has a limited capacity to correct this problem of dispersion. Canon first started experimenting with a material called fluorite back in the 60’s. The result was the creation of the first artificial fluorite lens elements. Unlike standard glass lens elements, which have but only a limited success in stopping dispersion, fluorite can vastly control axial chromatic aberration and thereby reduce color fringing. The Canon EF 17-40 mm f/4L USM does control chromatic aberration to a large extent; however it is not completely suppressed. Once you zoom out to 24mm or less, some chromatic aberration can be noticed specially where the edges of dark structures meet light colored backgrounds. Stopping down to a lower aperture or zooming in can reduce this problem significantly.

USM type

The Canon EF 17-40 mm f/4L USM lens has Ring Type USM. This means it is really fast when auto focusing and ensures quicker composition. There are two distinct types of USM (UltraSonic Motors) provided by Canon in its lenses. The L series lenses usually have the RingType which is faster and quieter. Comparatively the MicroMotor type USM has a pronounced noise when focusing and even the focusing is not that fast.

Bokeh

Usually wide angle lenses have a larger aperture, but the 17-40 mm starts at f/4 which makes it reasonably sharp even at wide angles. The trade off is one can expect only a little bit of bokeh when shooting at f/4.

Weather sealing

The EF 17-40 mm f/4L USM lens is weather sealed. However you will need to screw on a UV filter to be able to complete the sealing. Without a UV filter do not attempt to get the lens wet. Canon’s L series lenses use state of the art glass and optical technology and the EF 17-40 mm f/4L USM lives up to those standards.

Picture quality

Wide open or at fully zoomed in the 17-40mm does offer some very sharp images. As expected for wide angle lenses, when really wide open not the entire image (corner to corner) is sharp. Low lights will need more shutter speeds and without an IS system it should pose some problems for users to shoot while handholding the camera.

Vignetting

Vignetting is a problem if you mount the lens to a full frame body. At wider F stop there are going to be noticeable problems of vignetting as is expected with any lens as wide as this. However if you stop down and or even zoom out or use the lens on a cropped body (APS-C or APS-H) the problems of vignetting will be missing.

Canon EF 16-35 f-2.8L (L)& EF 17-40 f-4L (R)

Canon EF 16-35 f/2.8L (L) & EF 17-40 f/4L (R)

Comparing with the Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8 L II lens: is it a good buy?

Canon’s EF 16-35mm f/2.8 L II lens is something that comes very close to the Canon EF 17-40 mm f/4L USM in terms of focal length. But there is a considerable amount of price gap between the two that makes the price of the 17-40mm only half of that of the 16-35mm. The trade off however is the maximum aperture. While the 16-35mm is f/2.8 at its widest the 17-40mm is f/4 making it considerably slower. Again the 17-40 mm suffers from the lack of an IS system. This means when shooting at slower shutter speeds you will need to have a tripod to be able to steady the shot. Handholding at slower shutter speeds can be a problem; especially when you don’t have steady hands or the conditions are windy. The weight of the lens is around 500 gms which makes it slightly lighter than the Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8 L II lens (at 640gms). In spite of all that shortcomings, the lens is well built and should hold out even in the most trying of conditions. If you really want a cheaper wide angle lens that is part of the Canon L series then this is a good choice to go with.

Canon Speedlite 600EX-RT Press Release (UK)

Speedlite 600EX-RT – Taking creative flash further

The Speedlite 600EX-RT is a high-performance TTL flash unit designed to meet the expanding creative needs of modern professionals. Integrated radio frequency triggering, in addition to standard infra-red wireless flash control, allows photographers to achieve exciting results with complex on-and-off-camera lighting set-ups. Using one master 600EX-RT or the new ST-E3-RT radio-frequency wireless Speedlite transmitter, up to 15x 600EX-RT flash units, positioned up to 30m away, can be remotely triggered – offering great potential to experiment with more creative lighting techniques and effects. EOS cameras with a connected Speedlite 600EX-RT can also be triggered remotely by either model, allowing photographers to explore more extreme shooting angles to produce surprising and inspiring creative results.

Subjects over a wide range of distances can be lit creatively or evenly exposed, thanks to an increased guide number of 60m¹ and wide lens coverage of 20 – 200m. For wide-angle shots, a diffuser adapter can also reduce the focal length to 14mm and the bounce-and-swivel flash head creates more flattering, shadowless effects. Ideal for shooting portraits, a catch-light panel produces natural catch-lights in the eyes of a subject when shooting with bounce flash. Additionally, custom flash coverage options provide more creative scope by using guide number priority to light the subject, while creating slightly darker edges to the frame.

Like its predecessor, the Speedlite 600EX-RT communicates white balance settings to the camera through the hot shoe connection. However, to further balance flash and ambient light, a new colour filter adapter and two supplied colour gels can be fitted to balance the temperature of the flash and create a more natural effect when shooting around tungsten or mercury lighting. When shooting in dark conditions, photographers can also employ the AF-assist beam for accurate autofocus with lenses of 28mm or longer, ensuring the subject remains in focus when the flash fires

Designed for professionals, the Speedlite 600EX-RT and Speedlite Transmitter ST-E3-RT feature a robust, weatherproof design matching that of the EOS-1D X, with a clear LCD display making it easy to select settings and switch between normal flash mode and wireless modes. LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y., March 2, 2012 – On the 25th anniversary of its world-renowned EOS System, Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, is proud to announce its latest model, the new EOS 5D Mark III Digital SLR Camera. Positioned between the extremely popular EOS 5D Mark II and Canon’s top-of-the-line professional EOS-1D X model, the EOS 5D Mark III delivers superb image quality, thanks to a new 22.3-megapixel full-frame Canon CMOS sensor, a high-performance DIGIC 5+ Imaging Processor, a 61-point High Density Reticular Autofocus (AF) System and six frames-per-second (fps) continuous shooting speed. Building upon the trailblazing success of the EOS 5D Mark II, the EOS 5D Mark III also incorporates enhanced video features for professionals in the fields of cinematography, television production and documentary filmmaking, including better noise reduction, longer recording times and a built-in headphone jack for audio monitoring. The EOS 5D Mark III is Canon’s answer to hundreds of thousands of advanced amateurs and emerging professionals looking for a compact, high-quality camera system to help them achieve their artistic vision, whether it be through still or video imagery. The EOS 5D Mark III introduction coincides with Canon’s 25th anniversary celebration of the EOS camera system. Canon’s award-winning EOS system first debuted in March of 1987 with the introduction of the EOS 650 SLR camera and three EF lenses.

“We are extremely excited to announce the highly anticipated follow-up to our EOS 5D Mark II, a camera which has been called a ‘game-changer’ in most professional photography and videography circles. The EOS 5D Mark III will carry on that tradition, delivering better and more advanced features, helping our customers achieve excellent image quality for stills and video,” stated Yuichi Ishizuka, executive vice president and general manager, Imaging Technologies and Communications Group, Canon U.S.A.

The EOS 5D Mark III inherits many features from Canon’s recently announced flagship DSLR, the EOS-1D X, including a DIGIC 5+ Imaging Processor and a high-performance 61-point High Density Reticular AF array with up to 41 cross-type points and five dual cross-type points available, depending on the lens in use. The enhanced processing power enables fast continuous shooting of up to six fps, exceeding the speed of the EOS 5D Mark II model by more than 50 percent, and with improved weather resistance the EOS 5D Mark III is a serious option for sports and wildlife photographers.

EOS 5D Mark III Video: The Legacy Continues

The EOS 5D Mark II blazed the trail for EOS cameras and Canon to enter the professional video and cinema markets, paving the way for Canon’s recent introduction of the Cinema EOS system of cameras and lenses. Now, the EOS 5D Mark III continues Canon’s commitment to these new markets with new and requested features from cinematographers, television production professionals and independent filmmakers. This new model captures 1080p Full HD video at 24p (23.976), 25p, and 30p (29.97) fps; 720p HD recording at 60 (59.94) and 50 fps; and SD recording at 30 (29.97) and 25 fps, giving cinematographers and videographers more flexibility and options for video capture.

The EOS 5D Mark III includes new H.264 video compression formats to simplify and speed up post-production work: intraframe (ALL-I) compression for an editing-friendly format and interframe (IPB) compression for superior data storage efficiency, giving professionals options to help achieve their ideal workflow. Like the EOS-1D X, the 5D Mark III also includes two methods of SMPTE-compliant timecode embedding, Rec Run and Free Run, allowing video footage from multiple cameras and separate audio recordings to be synced together in post production.

The new full-frame CMOS sensor and DIGIC 5+ processor have enhanced the camera’s image processing performance over the 5D Mark II, significantly reducing moir‚ and color artifacts in scenes with horizontal lines. The video footage produced will exhibit less moir‚ than seen in previous DSLR models, resulting in a significant improvement in HD video quality. Accommodating documentary filmmakers, and event videographers using EOS DSLR cameras, the 5D Mark III includes the ability to record video continuously up to 29 minutes and 59 seconds across multiple 4GB files. Long-form filmmakers will enjoy the camera’s automatic file splitting in combination with the extended memory capacity offered by dual card slots.

The Canon EOS 5D Mark III also includes manual audio level control with 64 levels, adjustable both before and during movie recording. There is also an automatic audio level setting, or sound recording can be turned off entirely. A wind filter is also included. Sound can be recorded either through the internal monaural microphone or via an optional external microphone through the stereo mic input. Notably, the EOS 5D Mark III is the first EOS Digital SLR to feature a built-in headphone jack for real-time audio monitoring during video capture.

Newly Developed Canon CMOS Sensor

With its completely new 22.3-megapixel full-frame Canon CMOS image sensor, the EOS 5D Mark III becomes the highest resolution Canon Digital SLR released to date. It is eminently suitable for a wide variety of assignments including weddings and portraits, nature and wildlife, travel and landscapes as well as commercial and industrial photography. With a gapless microlens design, a new photodiode structure and improved on-chip noise reduction, the new sensor achieves higher sensitivity and lower noise levels for both RAW image data as well as in-camera JPEGs and EOS Movies compared to the 5D Mark II. The result is outstanding image quality in all shooting conditions, even low light. An eight-channel readout doubles the speed of image data throughput from the sensor to the DIGIC 5+ processor, resulting in better video image quality as well as six fps for still photos.

The low-light capability of the EOS 5D Mark III is evident in its incredible ISO range and image quality in poor lighting conditions. Adjustable from ISO 100 to 25,600 within its standard range, the new model also offers a low ISO 50 setting for studio and landscape photography and two extended ISO settings of 51,200 and 102,400, well suited for law enforcement, government or forensic field applications.

The new 5D Mark III is also equipped with Canon’s EOS Integrated Cleaning System, featuring a Self Cleaning Sensor Unit with a fluorine coating that repels dust and dirt particles.

Canon-Exclusive DIGIC 5+ Imaging Processor

The EOS 5D Mark III’s new DIGIC 5+ Imaging Processor is 17 times faster than the DIGIC 4.The EOS 5D Mark III uses that extra speed not only for improved image quality, but also to add no less than nine new features that do not exist on the 5D Mark II. These new features include six fps continuous shooting, HDR and Multiple Exposure modes, in-camera RAW processing, a comparative playback function, Scene Intelligent Auto mode, two forms of movie compression, and support for high-speed UDMA 7 Compact Flash memory cards.

Another extremely valuable feature enhanced by the DIGIC 5+ Imaging Processor is the EOS 5D Mark III’s choice of reduced resolution M-RAW (10.5 megapixel) and S-RAW (5.5 megapixel) recording modes. These settings are particularly useful to wedding photographers for candid photos that do not require the EOS 5D Mark III’s 22 megapixel full resolution, because they take up less space on the memory cards and speed up post-processing without losing the critical benefits of RAW image data, such as highlight and shadow control as well as white balance adjustment. M-RAW and S-RAW also preserve the full field of view rather than cropping the image or resorting to JPEG mode to reduce resolution.

High-Performance 61-Point High Density Reticular AF

For still photographers, Canon has included its new 61-point High Density Reticular AF System, originally introduced with the top-of-the-line EOS-1D X professional camera. A significant advancement over previous 5D-series AF systems, the new 61-Point High Density Reticular AF included in the EOS 5D Mark III is the most sophisticated SLR AF system Canon has ever released. All 61 points are manually selectable and sensitive to horizontal contrast with maximum apertures larger than or equal to f/5.6. The camera’s twenty one focusing points in the central area are also standard precision cross-type and effective with maximum apertures larger than or equal to f/5.6. The center five points are ultra-high-precision diagonal cross-type points for maximum apertures larger than or equal to f/2.8. The 20 outer focusing points function as high-precision cross-type points with maximum apertures larger than or equal to f/4.0. Other innovations of the new 61-point High Density Reticular AF include expanded AF coverage area, superior focusing precision and low-light sensitivity to EV -2, and greater low-contrast subject detection capability compared to earlier EOS AF systems. (See image below for AF point configuration)

High-Performance 61-Point High Density Reticular AF

All AF functions now have their own menu tab for quick and easy access (formerly AF custom functions in previous EOS models). A new AF Configuration Tool allows for customized setting of tracking sensitivity, the acceleration and deceleration of tracking subjects, and AF point auto switching, all of which are easily accessed and adjusted via the new AF menu tab. A built-in Feature Guide advises photographers on which settings to use according to subject matter.

The EOS 5D Mark III uses the same high-performance AI Servo III AF tracking algorithm as the flagship EOS-1D X professional DSLR. This new feature works together with the 61-point High Density Reticular AF system to provide superb tracking performance that blends very well with the new camera’s 6 frames-per-second high-speed continuous shooting capabilities.

Similar to the AF point selection options offered in the EOS 7D and EOS-1D X camera models, the EOS 5D Mark III offers six AF point selection modes: Spot, Single Point, Single Point with surrounding four points, Single Point with surrounding eight points, Zone selection and Automatic AF point selection.

iFCL Metering

Complementing the EOS 5D Mark III camera’s 61-point AF system is Canon’s 63-zone iFCL dual layer metering system. The ‘FCL’ stands for ‘Focus, Color and Luminance,’ and references the fact that the metering system not only measures color and luminance data, but also analyzes the data provided by each point of the AF system. Canon’s iFCL metering keeps exposure levels stable from shot to shot, even as the light source changes. The camera’s autofocus information is also used to help determine which area of the scene is of greatest importance in determining exposure.

HDR Mode

The EOS 5D Mark III camera features a built-in HDR mode, merging three images at various exposure levels into a single image, in-camera, for stunning photographs of landscapes and architecture with enhanced tonal gradation beyond the range of the naked eye. The exposure levels in the camera’s HDR mode can be set to cover a range of up to ñ3 stops, in a choice of five settings: Natural, Art Standard, Art Vivid, Art Bold and Art Embossed providing unique visual effects. Individual source images can be saved as separate files, and the HDR mode has an optional automatic alignment function that can be useful for hand-held shooting. The EOS 5D Mark III’s standard Auto Exposure Bracketing function has been upgraded to allow for up to seven exposures per sequence, and exposure compensation can now be set for up to +/- 5EV.

Multiple Exposure Mode

The EOS 5D Mark III is the second EOS Digital SLR after the EOS-1D X to feature Multiple Exposure capabilities with the ability to combine up to nine individual images into a single composite image, with no need for post-processing in a computer. Four different compositing methods are provided for maximum creative control, including Additive, Average, Bright and Dark. Compositing results can be viewed in real time on the camera’s LCD monitor, and there is a one-step Undo command that allows photographers to delete an image and try again if desired. The EOS 5D Mark III camera’s Multiple Exposure mode even allows photographers to specify a previously captured RAW image as the starting point for a new Multiple Exposure composite image, or shoot continuously when photographing moving subjects.

Comparative Playback

A new feature seen for the first time in the EOS System on the 5D Mark III is Comparative Playback allowing photographers to display two images side by side on the camera’s 3.2-inch LCD screen. The images can be displayed with a histogram to check exposure levels, or magnified to check for focus or facial expressions.

Durability, Reliability and Other Features

The EOS 5D Mark III features a rugged camera body with magnesium alloy body covers and a stainless steel lens mount. The new camera also has dust- and moisture-resistant design with improved gaskets and seals. Although not quite as weatherproof as an EOS-1D-series camera, the EOS 5D Mark III does feature improved weather resistance over the EOS 5D Mark II model. The EOS 5D Mark III’s newly developed shutter unit has a durability rating of 150,000 exposures, and shutter release lag time has been reduced to 59 milliseconds, making the shutter button very responsive. Canon’s locking mode dial is standard on the new model and a new custom function allows photographers to shut off other dials to prevent inadvertent operation.

The EOS 5D Mark III uses the same LP-E6 lithium-ion battery pack as other popular EOS cameras like the 5D Mark II, 7D and 60D. Battery life is estimated at 950 exposures at normal temperatures, an improvement of 100 exposures more than the EOS 5D Mark II. The EOS 5D Mark III body weighs approximately 33.5 oz. with a battery installed, and the dimensions are approximately 6.0 x 4.6 x 3.0 inches.

The EOS 5D Mark III incorporates Silent shooting modes, available for low-speed continuous shooting as well as single exposures. This feature is ideal when photographing in quiet environments. For better file management especially when working with multiple cameras, the new model also supports custom file names. There is also a new image rating feature that lets photographers rank their photos from 1 to 5 stars for quick editing.

The EOS 5D Mark III features a 3.2-inch Clear View II LCD screen with 1,040,000 dot resolution. This is the same screen that’s used in the top-of-the-line EOS-1D X. The camera’s optical viewfinder has been upgraded to approximately 100 percent coverage, and it features an Intelligent Viewfinder display with an optional grid on demand. The EOS 5D Mark III also has a built-in Dual Axis Electronic Level that can be displayed on both the LCD screen and the optical viewfinder.

The EOS 5D Mark III accepts both Compact Flash Type 1 and SD/SDHC/SDXC memory cards in a dual card slot configuration. Three recording methods are supported: Record the same data to both cards, record different file sizes or types to each card, or automatically switch to the second card when the first card is full.

Accessories

The EOS 5D Mark III DSLR also has a number of new optional accessories, including the new Canon Wireless File Transmitter WFT-E7A featuring wireless LAN support for 802.11 a/b/g/n signal protocols for various network environments. The WFT-E7A connects to the camera through its USB port and includes a built-in gigabit Ethernet connection, time syncing for multiple cameras on the same network, FTP mode, EOS Utility mode, WFT Server mode and Media Server mode. With this new WFT model, professionals can synchronize clocks on multiple cameras and use the unit to support linked shooting when utilizing multiple cameras. In addition, Bluetooth-compatible equipment can be easily linked to the device as well.

The EOS 5D Mark III also has an optional Canon GPS Receiver GP-E2, which can be connected to the camera via the accessory shoe or a USB cable. With a GPS logging function built-in, the GP-E2 will log latitude, longitude, elevation, and the Universal Time Code – and allow viewing of camera movement on a PC after shooting. With its built-in compass, the GP-E2 receiver will also record camera direction when shooting, even when shooting vertically. The Canon GPS Receiver GP-E2 is compatible with the EOS-1D X and EOS 7Di as well as the EOS 5D Mark III.ii

Battery Grip BG-E11 is an optional accessory for the EOS 5D Mark III that accepts one or two LP-E6 lithium-ion battery packs or a set of six AA-size batteries. This new grip has a multicontroller and a multifunction (M.Fn) button together a with a full set of grip controls for easy operation when shooting portraits or other vertical format photos. The BG-E11 is made from sturdy magnesium alloy and has the same degree of weather resistance as the EOS 5D Mark III.

Speedlite 600EX-RT

In addition to the EOS 5D Mark III, Canon is also announcing the first professional Speedlite on the market with a built-in wireless radio transmitter, the new Speedlite 600EX-RT. The new Canon Speedlite 600EX-RT is the flagship model in the Speedlite line, ideal for wedding portrait and photojournalism. Compatible with all EOS Digital SLRs, this new model eliminates the need for accessory radio slave units and their inherent limitations. Speedlite 600EX-RT features Master-Slave two-way transmission, letting the photographer control the Speedlite settings directly from the “Master” camera.

Radio-based Wireless E-TTL can be performed with up to 15 Speedlite 600EX-RT “slave units”, used off-camera up to 98.4 feet (30m) away, and triggered by either a “Master” 600EX-RT on-camera, or the optional new Speedlite Transmitter ST-E3-RT. Used with the EOS 5D Mark III or EOS-1D X, up to five groups of flashes can be completely controlled, independently, off-camera. And, it remains fully compatible with Canon’s legacy optical-based Wireless E-TTL technology, for users already committed to existing EOS Speedlites. The Speedlite features enhanced weather-resistant construction – matching that of the EOS-1D X camera body – and a more reliable electrical contact. The flash head zoom range now reaches from 20mm to 200mm.The Speedlite also allows remote shutter release of a single EOS camera, or Linked Shooting (simultaneous firing of up to 15 cameras, when one “Master” camera is fired), and includes gelatin filters and a dedicated filter holder to help photographers match ambient light.

Speedlite Transmitter ST-E3-RT

Canon is also introducing the new Speedlite Transmitter ST-E3-RT. Providing full support of Canon’s new radio-based wireless flash technology, the new ST-E3-RT can control up to five groups of flashes, up to 98.4 feet (30m) from the camera. The remote shutter release capability enables photographers to either fire a single camera remotely (by pressing a button on the ST-E3-RT), or to fire up to 15 EOS cameras with Canon’s Linked Shooting feature. Making it easy to control and adjust, all of the Speedlite Transmitter features are accessible through the Flash control menu of the EOS-1D X and EOS 5D Mark III cameras.

Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens

Product Summary

Overview

The EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS is a wide angle medium tele zoom that is designed for smaller 1.6x crop Canon DSLRs. It is compatible with the rebel series as well as the semi-pro 60D and others. This lens however is not compatible with any of the pro 35mm DSLRs or the APS-H sensor cameras that Canon produces. Its focal length is equivalent to 28.8-216mm on a 35mm format equivalent camera.

The lens construction is almost entirely plastic. The barrel, the focusing ring, the fore barrel are all made out of plastic. The mount is chromed metal. The markings on the lens are painted. It has 16 elements arranged in 12 groups. 6 blades make up the lens diaphragm which allows it to have a wide f-stop of f/3.5 at 18mm. At 135mm (fully zoomed in) the lens has a wide f-stop of f/5.6. The lens can alternatively stop down to f/22 – f/36.

The EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS does not have a manual focus override (FTM). Instead there is an AF/MF switch. Flick it and you should be able to now manually lock focus. The closest focusing distance that the lens has is 1.5’ (or 0.45 meters). The front elements of the lens moves during focusing however due to internal focusing technology they never rotate. The diagonal angle of view of the lens is 74° 20′ – 11° 30′.

The dimensions of the lens are 3.0 x 4.0” and it weighs 455 grams. The lens takes a filter of size 67mm. Also check EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM Lens with STM feature. Available at Amazon | AdoramaB&H.

Canon EF 200mm f/2.8 L II USM Lens

Product Summary

Features

A handy telephoto lens with a wide f-stop is a nature & wild life photographer’s dream come true. Specially when shooting feathered friends perched up in the trees surrounded by leaves in a tricky lighting condition. A wide f-stop such as that provided by the EF 200mm f/2.8 L II USM lens is much appreciated. Having said that, however, the lens is also suitable for fast action and sports photography. Considering the versatility of zoom & IS both the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM or EF 70-200f/2.8L IS II USM lenses are better choices.

The construction of the EF 200mm f/2.8 L II USM lens consists of 9 elements including two UD (Ultra-Low Dispersion) glass elements and is arranged in 7 groups. The lens features Canon’s USM (Ultra-Sound Motor) technology which basically means the lens is quiet when focusing, making it ideal for a nature & wild life photographer. Additionally the presence of Rear focusing elements means the lens never extends when focusing making it discreet.

The diagonal angle of view of the lens is 12°. Even for a lens of this long focal length range it has a close focusing distance of only 4.9 feet or 1.5 meters giving it a maximum magnification ratio of 1:6.25. This makes the lens somewhat suitable for the purpose of close-up photography. The diaphragm of the lens consists of 8 blades with the maximum aperture of f/2.8. The lens can stop all the way down to f/32. The wide aperture provides excellent bokeh in your shots. The overall external dimensions of the lens are 3.3″ x 5.4″ and the weight is 765 grams. It takes a filter of 72mm.Also have a look at Canon EF 200mm f/2L IS USM.

Features

This exotic L series lens has a very fast f-stop for a tele lens of such long reach. at f/2 the EF 200mm f/2.0 L IS USM is one stop faster than the slower EF 200mm f/2.8 L II USM. The lens construction consists of a total of 17 elements including fluorite and UD (Ultra-low Dispersion) elements arranged in 12 groups.

The lens features Canon’s Optical Image Stabilization (IS) technology which gives it up to four stops of stabilization when it comes to shooting hand held. The lens also features USM (Ultra-Sonic Motor) which gives it very quiet focusing. This lens is ideal for the purpose of shooting nature and wildlife photography and or fast action or sports photography. with a wide f-stop of f/2 it is that much faster when it comes to low light and indoor shooting requirements. Rear focusing elements means the overall length of the lens never extends during focusing.

At $6000 the EF 200mm f/2.0 L IS USM is certainly pricier than the EF 200mm f/2.8 L II USM. However this lens should appeal to professional nature and wild life photographers (and for that matter sports and even journalistic photographers) who need something that is tough, well built and able to survive the elements.

The lens has minimum focusing distance of 6.2’ (1.9 meters). The diagonal angle of view of the lens is 12°(on a full frame DSLR). The overall dimensions of the lens are 5.0” x 8.2” while weighing a hefty 2520 grams. The lens takes a gelatin filter of 52mm.

Press Release

LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y., January 23, 2008 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging, today announced the launch of two new telephoto lenses for use with its EOS SLR cameras: the EF 200mm f/2L IS USM*/** and the EF 800mm f/5.6L IS USM*/**, the world’s longest focal length lens with an Optical Image Stabilizer system.*** The Company, which exhibited prototypes of the lenses during PhotoPlus Expo in New York last October, is launching them at the PMA tradeshow (booth E101) at the Las Vegas Convention Center, January 31 to February 2.

“The development of these two new lenses continues to show how Canon actively responds to the imaging needs of our professional and advanced amateur customers. We are proud to provide the right equipment to help photographers capture the best and brightest images under all conditions,” said Yuichi Ishizuka, senior vice president and general manager, Consumer Imaging Group, Canon U.S.A.

The EF 800mm f/5.6L IS USM and EF 200mm f/2L IS USM are professional L-Series lenses that incorporate the latest generation of Canon’s high-performance Optical Image Stabilizer system (OIS), giving them a stabilization effect equivalent to a shutter speed four settings faster. In addition, they feature optical systems utilizing fluorite and UD lens elements to provide excellent chromatic aberration correction for high-resolution, high-contrast shooting performance. Both lenses use only lead-free glass, and also incorporate lightweight yet durable magnesium alloy lens barrels with enhanced resistance to moisture and dust.

The Canon EF 200mm f/2L IS USM is an exceptionally sharp lens that is significantly lighter (2520g/5.5 lbs. vs. 3000g/6.6 lbs.) than its predecessor, the renowned EF 200mm f/1.8L USM lens, while adding OIS and a weather-resistant design. Ideal for all kinds of low-light photography including portraiture as well as indoor sports, the EF 200mm f/2L IS USM has a close-focus setting of 1.9 m/6.2 feet and a circular aperture system that enhances its background blur rendition at wide apertures.

The Canon EF 800mm f/5.6L IS USM is not only the longest focal length lens available with OIS, it is also virtually the same physical size as the EF 600mm f/4L IS USM (461mm vs. 456mm), while weighing nearly 2 lbs. less (4500g/9.9 lbs. vs. 5360g/11.8 lbs.). These outstanding features were made possible by the use of a lightweight magnesium alloy lens barrel construction and a state-of-the-art super-telephoto optical system featuring 2 fluorite elements as well as Super UD and UD glass elements. The EF 800mm f/5.6L IS USM is well-suited for a wide variety of long-range photo applications such as wildlife and nature photography as well as sports and documentary photojournalism.

The new Canon EF 200mm f/2L IS USM is scheduled to be available in April at an estimated retail price of $5,999.00 and the new Canon EF 800mm f/5.6L IS USM is scheduled to be available in May for an estimated retail price of $11,999.00.

Overview

Canon decided to revamp the famed EF 500mm f/4.0 L IS USM and launch an II version of the lens. They packed a few interesting features too to make this lens even better than the predecessor. One of these features is not obvious however and one has to pick up the lens mounted to a camera to understand it; this lens is light! The fluorite optics has been completely redesigned leading to reduced color fringing.

Apart from IS I and IS II modes Canon also developed a third IS (Image stabilization) mode which engages the image stabilization system only when the shutter button is fully pressed. This eliminates the lens trying to compensate for camera movements when composing the frame. Overall image stabilization system in the lens provides it up to four stops of compensation against camera shake (or four stops faster shutter speed when hand-held). The angle of view is super narrow at only 5°. Auto-focusing performance is very good and the ring-type USM (ultra-sonic motor) technology ensures that this lens does not disappoint.

The overall construction has been made a tag lighter with the introduction of magnesium and titanium elements. Weather sealing makes the lens one of the best in the business for the purpose of dust and water resistance. Pro users would love the fact that they don’t need to take a rain check when leaving for an assignment. This is certainly a wild-life photographer’s dream come true. The lens consists of 16 elements arranged in 12 groups. The external dimensions of the lens are 5.7″ x 15.1″ and it weighs 3190 grams. It takes a filter of size 52mm. Available at Amazon | AdoramaB&H

Canon EF 400mm f/4 DO IS USM Lens

Product Summary

Features

Canon lens line up currently has different version of this 400nn range. The EF 400mm f/4.0 DO IS USM features Canon’s multi-layer diffractive optical lens technology.  Other two versions are cheaper EF 400mm f/5.6 L USM & expensive EF 400mm f/2.8 L IS II USM Lens. This lens was the first of its kind that featured this technology that launched in Photokina 2000. There are many advantages of this technology and one among them is the excellent chromatic aberration cancellation that is achieved in comparison to standard UD, Super-UD and fluorite based lens elements. It also reduces the density of the lens elements, reduces the over all length of the lenses and their bulk. For a super telephoto lens such as the EF 400mm f/4.0 DO IS USM the effect is quite evident. Additionally Canon has implemented Fluorite & UD elements in this lens making it possible to eliminate any ancillary chromatic aberration.

Canon has also provided IS (Image Stabilization) technology in the lens which makes it up to two stops equivalent of stabilized. The presence of FTM (Full Time Manual) focusing means the photographer can easily switch from Auto to Manual focusing at any time without having to flick a switch for the changeover. The lens also has inner focusing elements (fixed lens barrel length) and USM (ultra-sonic motor) for faster and quieter auto-focusing.

The overall construction of this $6469 lens is excellent. Magnesium alloy lens barrel prevents dust and dirt from getting inside the lens. This super telephoto lens comes with 17 elements arranged in 13 groups. The diagonal angle of view of the lens is 6° 10′. The external dimensions of the lens are 5.0″ x 9.2″ and the weight of the lens is 1940 grams. Available at Amazon | AdoramaB&H

However, having said that, it is equally adaptable and usable if you have a small compact Canon camera which comes with a hot-shoe. Retailing at less than $150 the Speedlite 270EX II is one flash gun that should be part of every amateur (and in some cases even professional photographer’s) kit bag. The Speedlite 270EX II can be used as slave unit when used with specific Canon EOS DSLR units that have integrated Speedlite transmitters. This greatly enhances the potential of the Speedlite 270EX II.

Key Features

  • Lightweight compact design

Product Summary

Overview

An unique feature of the Speedlite 320EX is a front mounted LED light that allows the subject to be illuminated during live view shooting. The light can also be used as a AF assist beam or can also be used to supplement the available ambient light during a video shoot. The radio transmission facility enables the Speedlite 320EX to be used with Canon EOS digital cameras which have integrated Speedlite transmitters and be used as a unit that is positioned elsewhere than the camera hot-shoe. When shooting the recycling time of the flash gun is 2 seconds.

The guide number of the flash can be manually adjusted. This gives a lot of convenience to the user for the purpose of shooting great quality pictures each and every time. The standard guide number of the lens is 79 (ft.) / 24 (m) at ISO 100 for a full frame 35mm lens. When you re-adjust the position of the flash head to tele, the guide number re-adjusts to 105 (ft.) / 32 (m) at ISO 100.

The Speedlite 320EX is powered by a pack of 4 AA batteries. Alternatively one can use 4 Ni-MH or lithium batteries. On a fully charged set of AA alkaline batteries the flash gun can provide anything between 180-1000 flashes. There is also a built-in power saving mode in the flash which turns the flash gun off after 90 seconds of inactivity.

The external dimensions of the flash are 2.8 x 4.5 x 3.1” and it weighs 275 grams.

Canon Speedlite 430EX II

Product Information

Overview

The is a balance between a powerful guide number (141 ft. /43m at ISO 100), zoom range (24-105mm) and an affordable price ($300) that is affordable for professional and even amateur photographers. Designed for all Canon EOS cameras and even compatible with the famed G series of compact cameras, the 430EX II is a handy piece of secondary (or primary, depending on how you use it) light source for those tricky lighting situations.

The overall ergonomics is very good. In terms of setting up the Speedlite on a DSLR there is a dedicated quick-lock mechanism that allows the flash to be easily mounted and or dismounted. There is also a metal foot which has been added for strength and durability. It has an extremely fast recycle time and the lag between shots is almost negligible (up to 20% faster than comparable 430EX model – 0.1 to 3.7/2 seconds on Alkaline/Ni-MH batteries).

Matching sensor size : When mounted to compatible EOS digital cameras, the Speedlite 430EX II detects whether the sensor is full frame, APS-C or APS-H. The flash’s zoom position is then automatically adjusted, optimising flash coverage and the amount of charge needed per shot.

The Speedlite also comes with a bright LCD display that allows it to be controlled right from the screen. The flash head is very flexible. It can be turned from 0-90˚ upward, left from 0-180˚ and right from 0-90˚. Built-in AF assist beam which covers all the nine points of an EOS AF system.

Four AA-sized Alkaline Batteries (6V) is required for powering the flash. Optionally one can use four AA-size Ni-MH (4.8V) batteries. Using these specification batteries one can obtain around 200-1400 flashes. The overall dimensions of the flash gun are 2.8 x 4.8 x 4.0” and it weighs 330 grams minus the batteries.

Accessories

The Speedlite 430EX II can be used with the optional accessories: the Canon OC-E3 off-camera shoe cord and the Speedlite bracket SB-E2. Featuring a handy quick release/locking mechanism, the OC-E3 adds wired, short-range positioning flexibility to the Speedlite 430EX II. The Speedlite bracket SB-E2 is designed specifically for wedding and press photography and allows the Speedlite 430EX II to be mounted to one side of the camera – removing the harsh, unnatural shadows. Available at Amazon | Adorama | B&H

Canon EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens

Product Summary

Overview

Designed for the crop 1.6x Canon DSLRs the EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM lens covers a very interesting focal length range of 15-85mm (equivalent to a 24-135mm on a 35mm camera). This practically makes the lens an all purpose one for most everyday shooting needs, unless you need to shoot something at 100 meters or more and resultantly need a longer focal length. it has a total of 17 lens elements, including 1 UD glass and 3 aspherical elements, arranged in 12 groups. The diaphragm of the lens is made up of 7 blades.

The lens comes with Canon’s IS (Image stabilization technology) which allows up to four stops slower shutter speed even when the camera is hand held. It also has a close focusing distance 1.15’ (0.35 meters) with a maximum reproduction ratio of 1:4.8.

This lens has FTM which means you will probably never have to switch to manual focusing again. To focus precisely, all you need to do is to let the lens auto-focus and then simply turn the focusing ring to fine tune it. No need to flick any switch for the ‘switchover’. During zooming the lens barrel does not rotate, however the barrel does extend and contract which means this is not exactly a discreet lens.

Overall build quality of the lens is good. It is almost entirely built out of plastic. The dimensions of the lens are 3.2″ x 3.4″ and the weight is 575 grams. It has a filter thread specification of 72mm. Available at Amazon | Adorama | B&H

Canon TS-E 90mm f/2.8 Lens

Product Summary

Overview

This is a special purpose lens. With TS-E lens, photographers can control the angle of the plane of focus and the perspective. With TS-E lenses the effects of large-format camera movements can be obtained . This is longest focal TS-E in canon line up. Even though manual focusing is required, still automatic aperture control enables autoexposure and autoexposure bracketing. The tilt and shift axes intersect at a 90° angle. They can be made parallel at an authorized Canon Service Facility (modified at owner’s expense).

It features a telephoto perspective, fast f/2.8 speed, and full tilt and shift movements in a compact, professional package. This lens is impressively sharp. It can alter the plane of focus, that can provide a “look” that previously required a view camera to achieve such effect. Some photographers use it as a great option for portraits, products and even fashion work. It can focus as close as 1.6 ft or 0.5m. This provides magnifications of about 1/3 life-size.

Overview

Aa awesome refinement to a true Canon classic, the new TS-E 24mm f/3.5L II offers enhanced functionality and exceptional image quality in this most popular tilt-shift focal range. It was introduced along with TS-E 17mm f/4L. Designed with UD glass to minimize chromatic aberrations and specially coated aspherical elements for the best possible glare-free image quality, this tilt-shift lens gives an angle of view of 74 degrees. Newly added TS revolving lets photographers freely combine tilting and shifting within the range of +/- 90 degrees along the direction of movement. It also has an extended range of movement of up to +/- 8.5 degrees. It  has a revolving construction for both portrait and landscape shooting modes, locking, ergonomically designed and easily operated tilt and shift knobs, uses a circular aperture for beautiful out-of-focus areas, and is constructed using only lead-free glass. It has an SWC lens coating that minimize ghosting and flare to a far greater degree than earlier coating technologies.

Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS USM Lens

Canon EF 100mm - 400mm f/4.5-5.6L USM Lens

Product Summary

Overview

Made for the true wildlife photographer or sports/action photographer, the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS USM lens has a fast f/4 aperture great optical zoom ratio of 4x (100mm-400mm) and has both the ring-type USM (Ultra-sonic motor) and IS (image stabilization) technology. Canon has provided both fluorite and Super-UD (Ultra-Low Dispersion) elements in the lens which ensures that the lens has great suppression of lens flairs when shooting wide and color fringing when shooting fully zoomed in.

The image stabilization feature of the lens is very good. Being a L series lens the overall performance is excellent. The lens will automatically disengage the IS when mounted on a tripod. There are overall two IS modes in the lens. Overall chromatic aberration is well controlled although some of it is noticed at when the lens is used fully zoomed in on a APS-C Canon DSLR. Additionally some amount of vignetting is noticed when used on a full frame DSLR fully zoomed in. stopping down corrects this problem. APS-C users may also notice the same when shooting at f/5.6. Canon has provided its ring-type USM technology in the lens. This makes it very fast and very quiet when focusing something that wild-life photographers would love.

Overall the lens has 17 lens elements arranged in 14 groups. Rear focusing elements means the lens barrel never extend when focusing or zooming. The external dimensions of the lens are 3.6” x 7.4” and the weight is 1380 grams. The lens takes a filter of thread specification 77mm. Also have a look at EF 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6 L IS USM Lens.
