Overview
A slightly slower than the EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS lens, the EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM is a lens that is designed for smaller cropped sensor Canon DSLRs. It has the same effective focal length range as a 28-135mm lens would have on a 35mm camera. It features Canon’s Image Stabilization (IS) system which allows the lens, mounted on a DSLR, to be hand-held for shooting at up to three stops slower shutter speeds than normally is possible. This practically eliminates the need for a tripod for most cases.
The 17-85mm f/4-5.6 has a total of 17 elements arranged in 12 groups. The diaphragm of the lens is made up of 6 rounded blades. The lens features Canon’s ring-type USM (Ultra-sonic motor). This essentially makes the lens a good deal quieter when focusing. It also has FTM (Full-time manual focusing) which means it is possible to fine tune the focusing even when the auto-focusing is engaged. All one needs to do is to turn the focusing ring.
The lens can focus as close as 1.1’ (0.35 meters). This lens is not exactly best used as a micro lens. However for every other real requirement the Canon focuses very fast.
The build quality of the lens is not something to be too proud of. It is almost entirely made out of plastic. The mount of the lens is however metal. The lens takes a filter of 67mm. The dimensions of the lens are 3.1″ x 3.6″ and it weighs a reasonable 475 grams. Available at Amazon | Adorama | B&H

Overview
By far the largest and the most expensive commercially produced lens from Canon (the 1200mm f/5.6 super telephoto lens is manufactured only on demand and is an extremely rare piece of optical marvel) the EF 800mm f/5.6 L IS USM lens is not for someone with a faint heart. It costs a hefty $14,000 and is one most definitely built for only the most interested wild-life or sports photographer. So monstrous is this lens that it comes in a trunk of its own for transporting. However even for its monstrous focal length the lens actually weighs just under ten lbs (9.9) only making it (quite surprisingly) lighter than the 600mm f/4 IS.
This monster telephoto lens has a total of 18 elements including two fluorite elements, one UD (Ultra-low dispersion) and one super-UD glass element arranged in 14 groups. The lens has a great performance when it comes to color fringing, flares and ghosting. Not surprisingly when mounted on a full frame sensor the diagonal angle of view of the lens is only 3° 5′. Canon has provided ring-type USM (Ultra-Sonic Motor) on this lens making it quiet during auto-focusing.
The diaphragm of the lens is built using 8 rounded blades. The soft bokeh that the f/5.6 aperture provides isolates the subject from the background quiet beautifully. The closest focusing distance of the lens is 19.7’ (6 meters) with a magnification ratio of 0.14x. The external dimensions of the lens are 6.4” x 18.1”. The lens takes a gelatin filter of 52mm.

Overview
Canon TS-E lens, give you the ability to control the angle of the plane of focus and the picture’s perspective. The effects of large-format camera movements can be mimicked with TS-E lenses for EOS cameras. This is a manual focus lens. But automatic aperture control enables autoexposure and autoexposure bracketing. The tilt and shift axes intersect at a 90° angle. At an authorized Canon Service Facility (modified at owner’s expense) they can be made parallel
This is the normal lens in the Canon’s TS-E line up, and an excellent choice for product shooting and other applications calling for a natural perspective. It enables up to 11mm of shift off-center, and even more impressive, tilting of the front standard up to 8° to modify the plane of focus. The TS-E 45mm f/2.8’s features are a floating optical system (focusing down to 1.3 ft/0.4m), and a precise rear-group focusing system.

Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS II USM Lens
Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS II USM Lens (Amazon | Adorama | B&H)
The most celebrated 70-200mm lens in the Canon EF line. At $2500 this is the most expensive 70-200mm medium telephoto lens that Canon offers. The best thing about this lens is the presence of IS II. For a lens that offers a 200mm maximum focal length range the presence of IS is a critically important requirement. At this high range even if you have very steady hands, the slightest of camera shake is magnified. The presence of the next generation of IS means that the lens can be hand held for slower shutter speeds of up to four stops without issues.
Additionally the presence of USM (Ultra-sonic Motor) ensures that the lens is silent when auto-focusing. This is not the cheaper Micro Motor variety USM but the advanced Ring-type USM that Canon uses for its higher end L series lenses mainly. Additionally full-time manual focusing is present in the lens. All one needs to do to shift to manual focusing is to turn the focusing ring without having to flick the mode switch.
There are a total of 23 elements arranged in 19 groups. Canon has provided a total of five UD (Ultra-low Dispersion) glass elements and one fluorite element in the lens ensuring that the lens has little to now effect from Lateral Chromatic Aberration (LCA).
The overall construction of the lens is extremely good. The build quality of the lens is befitting its L series tag and the lens is protected against water and dust related issues thanks due to its weather sealed construction. The external dimensions of the lens are 3.5 x 7.8” and it weighs 1490 grams. If you are in tight budget you can also consider Canon EF 70-200 f/4L IS.

Lake Success, N.Y., January 5, 2010 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging, introduces the new EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM lens. Arguably the most popular focal range in Canon’s telephoto arsenal and a staple lens for any professional photographer, the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM lens provides the focal length, maximum aperture and zoom power for capturing everything from fast-action sports to studio portraits. Built for the professional, the body structure of the new EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM lens has been enhanced to provide better durability and strength without a significant increase in weight. Canon has improved optical performance on the new EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM lens by redesigning the internal elements, incorporating a fluorite element and a fifth UD element. The use of the fluorite element and five UD elements helps to minimize secondary chromatic aberrations and produce better image quality with improved contrast and resolution through the entire zoom range; the end result is an optically precise lens worthy of becoming the leader of Canon’s L-series lenses.
Along with its redesigned optical elements, the new lens design features improved AF speeddue to a new focusing algorithm and has reduced the minimum focusing distance to 3.9 feet (1.2 meters) through the entire zoom range, allowing photographers to capture tighter portraiture shots in a small studio space. The previous lens model’s minimum focusing distance was 4.6 feet (1.4 meters), whereas now photographers can stand nearly 8 inches closer to their subject and achieve sharp focus and tight crops. Canon has also enhanced the Image Stabilization allowing it to compensate for shutter speeds up to four steps slower than 1/focal length, a one step improvement over the previous lens model.
“Canon’s core has always been our optics, and we are constantly challenging ourselves to produce better and more advanced optical systems for our customers. The new EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM lens incorporates the best advancements in Canon lens technology from the past few years and packages it into what we believe will be the most popular lens for professionals and advanced photographers,” stated Yuichi Ishizuka, senior vice president and general manager, Consumer Imaging Group, Canon U.S.A.
The enhanced magnesium alloy barrel design of the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM lens features added strength with a minimal 20-gram increase in weight compared with the previous model (1490g vs. 1470g) and retains Canon’s protective seals and fittings providing dust and water resistance for those photographers working in adverse conditions. A new bayonet mount on the front of the lens includes a locking mechanism to ensure the supplied lens hood remains securely in place. Other noticeable improvements include a wider focusing ring, andsleeker design by reducing the thickness of any protruding elements such as the switch panel. The new lens is also compatible with Canon’s existing EF1.4X II and EF2X II Extenders as well as EF Extension Tubes and the 77mm Close-Up Lens 500D.
Pricing and Availability
The Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM lens is supplied with a detachable tripod collar, a reversible bayonet mount lens hood and a lens pouch. The new lens is scheduled to be delivered to U.S. dealers in April, price to be determined.About Canon U.S.A., Inc.

Features
This lens the bokeh king. Ideal as a medium range telephoto lens the EF 85mm f/1.2 L II USM is compatible with Canon’s entire range of full frame, APS-C and APS-H DSLRs.
The EF 85mm f/1.2 L II USM has a ring type USM (Ultra-Sonic Motor). This ensures that the auto-focusing performance of the lens is quiet and fast. The lens construction includes 8 elements arranged in 7 groups. It also has full-time manual focusing (FTM). This means for switching from auto to manual one does not need to flick a switch. Simply turning the manual focusing ring allows the lens to switch from auto to manual. The lens has a diagonal angle of view of 28°30′.
The closest focusing distance of the lens is 3.2 feet (0.95 meters) which makes the lens not the ideal partner for close-up photography. Additionally the lens is very expensive retailing at $2200. It is also one of the heavier of the medium range tele lenses that Canon currently offers. Additionally with a lens this wide, when shooting fully wide one is bound to get a bit more problem of flares and ghosts when compared to an f/1.4 lens.
The over all lens construction is befitting its L (luxury) tag and certainly makes professional users wielding a full frame DSLR and requiring an all purpose 85mm medium zoom seriously consider buying this. The external dimensions of the lens are 3.6” x 3.3” and it weighs a hefty 1025 grams. The lens has a large filter thread specification of 72mm.
This ultra-fast lens is perfect for low light photography without having to do a trade-off between shutter speed and noise. Having said that, it is great for all other types of lighting conditions as well. If your budget is tight, the EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Lens is a excellent choice as well.

Press Release
Amstelveen, The Netherlands, 21 February, 2006: Canon today releases its latest professional L-series prime lens: the exceptionally fast EF 85mm f/1.2 II USM. With the widest aperture of any lens in the current EF range, the new model becomes Canon’s definitive portraiture lens, offering extremely fine control over depth of field and consummate low light performance. With vastly improved auto focus speed, the lens replaces the popular EF 85mm f/1.2L USM. As with all L-series lenses, the EF 85mm f/1.2 II USM incorporates the very finest standards of precision optics.
EF 85mm f/1.2 II USM – $2,099 (€2,049)
The EF 85mm f/1.2 II USM features:
• Canon’s finest standards of image quality
• Latest Ultrasonic Motor (USM) for fast and near silent auto focus
• Full-time electronic manual focus override
• Super Spectra coatings and optimised lens element shaping to suppress flare and ghosting
• Large circular aperture diaphragm for good background bokeh and ‘removal’ of distracting backgrounds
• Distance information passed back to the new E-TTL II flash algorithm of all current model digital EOS cameras
• Lens hood and pouch included in the box
L-series construction
The L-series is Canon’s flagship professional lens range, designed and built to meet the needs of the most demanding professional photographers. The superb optics of the EF 85mm f/1.2 II USM and other L-series lenses represent the pinnacle of optical performance, enabling focal length/speed/quality combinations not readily attainable using traditional optical technologies.
Portrait photography
The combination of an almost circular aperture diaphragm for attractive bokeh (evenly graduated blurring of out-of-focus areas) and the extremely narrow depth of field at its widest aperture combine to make this an ideal portraiture and studio lens. With the lens’ aperture at f/1.2, photographers can create dramatic effects such as keeping a model’s eye sharp while blurring the eye lash ends.
Low light shooting
The maximum f/1.2 aperture is the widest in Canon’s current range and provides for shooting in low light conditions without the need for flash or slow shutter speeds. With improved auto-focus speed from Canon’s latest Ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM), the lens is expected to be popular with professional photographers shooting indoor sports. The USM holds the lens with precision and accuracy, the instant it arrives at the correct focus and without overshoot, and features full-time electronic manual focus override*. Super-fine control over depth of field afforded by the lens’ large aperture allows sports photographers to deliberately ‘blur out’ crowds, hoardings and other distracting backgrounds.
Aspheric element
Wide aperture lenses using traditionally manufactured elements suffer from spherical aberration which causes an overall softening and optical ‘smearing’ of the image. To ensure high corner-to-corner sharpness and contrast of in-focus subjects throughout the focus range and at wide apertures, the EF 85mm f/1.2 II USM incorporates a large aspherical lens element with precise variable curvature and a floating group construction.
Super Spectra coatings
In addition to optimised lens shaping to reduce reflections and the use of anti-reflective material inside the lens barrel, the EF 85mm f/1.2 II USM employs Canon’s patented Super Spectra lens element coatings. These suppress flare and ghosting – more prone to occur with digital cameras due to reflection off the image sensor. By increasing light absorption, coatings reduce reflections off lens element surfaces to deliver crisp, undistorted images with natural colour balance.
E-TTL II flash integration
The EF 85mm f/1.2 II USM transmits distance information to the E-TTL II flash system of all current model digital EOS cameras, improving flash exposure metering when used in conjunction with Canon’s range of EX Speedlite flash units.
The EF 85mm f/1.2 II USM comes with a cylindrical lens hood and lens pouch. In keeping with Canon’s Kyosei philosophy of living in harmony with the environment, the lens features only lead-free glass.* With P, Av, Tv and M camera modes only

Features explained
The flagship D4 is Nikon’s top-of-the-line DSLR for professional photographers looking to shoot sports, action and anything else under the sun.
The 51-point auto-focusing system
The D4’s 51-point auto-focusing system is the key to superior sharp photos in most lighting conditions. The central 15 AF points performs as cross-type for lenses equal or faster than f/5.6. For any other lenses slower than f/5.6 but faster than f/8 15 AF points are available with the central 9 working as cross-type. For lenses slower than f/8 only the central horizontal line with one point each on other side of the central point on the vertical line is available. The central point serves as the only cross type AF point.
Auto-focusing speed
The Advanced Multi-CAM 3500FX auto-focus sensor module is at the heart of the blazingly fast auto-focusing system. Together with the 51 AF points the D4 can auto-focus with pin-point accuracy even in the most dimly lit conditions.
Continuous shooting speed
The D4 has a continuous shooting speed of 11 fps with locked focus and exposure on. However with metering and AE/AF on for each frame the D4 still churns out a fantastic 10 fps in full resolution.
Videos & stills
The D4 shoots FX format large JPEGs at 4,928 × 3,280 pixels. It can shoot RAW (NEF) in 12 or 14 bits and simultaneously shoot NEF+JPEG. It also shoots full HD videos at 30 and 24 fps. In 720p HD it shoots videos in 30 and 60 fps. Video format recorded are in .mov files and either of H.264 or MPEG4 compression system is used. Although the built-in mic is monaural there are options to plug in an external stereo mic jack via the 3.5mm plug. There is also a 24–36,000x time-lapse mode for shooting time lapse photography.
The viewfinder & the LCD monitor
The eye-level pentaprism viewfinder has a field of view coverage of 100% and a magnification of 0.7x. On DX format setting the viewfinder has a approx 97% coverage. The eyepoint is 18mm.
The D4 boasts a 3.2” LCD TFT monitor with 921,000 dots resolution. Even in bright sunshine the ambient brightness sensor ensures that the images displayed & reviewed are sharp and easy to view. It allows up to 46x enlargements for reviewing pictures shot at the highest resolution. The monitor has a wide 170˚ viewing angle.
Storage
The D4 comes with dual card slots. One of them is for the standard CF card compatible with UDMA 7 and the other one is for a XQD card. the two cards can be used to either record the same images / data, or used as a complimentary with each other like recording in one when the other is full, or record RAW in one and the JPEG in the other etc.
Dual-axis virtual horizon
The D4 comes with both a viewfinder (1degree increments) and a LCD monitor (5 ˚ increments) based dual-axis virtual horizon detection function that operates to let the photographer know whether he is perfectly level side to side and front to back. This is ideally suitable for professional photographers.
Other ports and compliances
The D4 comes with a Ethernet port for transferring of images to a computer or central ftp server via a RJ45 jack. There is also a 3.5mm jack terminal for plugging an external stereo mic jack. There is also a terminal for plugging a wireless transmitter WT-5A/B/C/D. the camera is also compliant with an optional remote control, GPS Unit GP-1.
Durability in severe environmental conditions
The D4’s body is comprised of strong-yet-lightweight magnesium alloy. This assures the camera’s superb reliability even in the most demanding environmental conditions
What are missing / wish list
Launched in early 2012, the D4 is the new flagship for FX format Nikon DSLRs. The engineers at Nikon have packed in almost every tiny improvement over the last few years. The ergonomics of the camera are pretty much the similar as well as the general feel in the hands; however some buttons and dials have switched places such as the new video recording button has taken the place where the old mode dial used to be. The advanced mode dial has not been improved. These are some bits of examples where Nikon could have improved the camera. However they have also done some good changes like the new function button. The fact that it can be separately programmed is wonderful.
Similar products
The older D3X and the rival Canon 1DX are two cameras that can be looked into. In fact, if you are not married to nikon with superior specs & better performance the Canon EOS 1DX is a clear winner.
Should I buy it?
At $6000 the D4 is certainly the best Nikon that your money can buy if you are a Nikon Shooter. This is a tool that is best used by the hands by a professional who knows what he is doing and can bring out the best in it. In the hands of an amateur who don’t know how to shoot, don’t expect that if you spend an insane amount of money you can start to shoot like a pro. So if you’re a pro and you absolutely need this beast, go right ahead and buy it. If not, then try looking at something like the D600, which is the smallest Nikon full frame DSLR retailing at around $2000 as the better choice.

Canon EF 135mm f/2.0 L USM Lens
Canon EF 135mm f/2.0 L USM (Amazon | Adorama | B&H)
Canon’s L series lenses have always been considered the pinnacle of their lens technology. Thanks to endearing reviews and the mad fanaticism that revolves around them; people have gone to great distances trying to own one of them. What makes them great is not only the reviews but the sheer piece of technological marvel that goes into making them. Each L series lens is a great piece of glass bundled with tiny pieces of technology marvels that make them that much easier to focus and compose the shots. The Canon EF 135mm f/2L USM lens is one such great piece of glass and one that has been used quite often by both professional and amateur photographers. The fact that it is an EF lens means that it can fit into almost all Canon DSLR’s that has an EF or an EF-S mount.

Canon EF 135mm f/2 L (L) & EF 16-35mm f/2.8L
(R)
So what’s so good about this one? One great thing about the Canon EF 135mm f/2L USM lens is it’s legendary sharpness & bokeh . This lens is so sharp that sometimes you need to reduce it in post process. The moment you start shooting with this lens, you’ll feel that sharpness even looking at your Cameras Back LCD. The front end of the lens does not rotate when you focus it, either when manually focusing or when auto-focusing. For those who use filters and polarizers, this means a big deal. Additionally the lens barrel does not extend as it has an internal focusing system. That means you appear less intimidating to your unsuspecting subjects while shooting. Apart from shooting fast action photography this is a great piece of glass for shooting exceptionally great quality portraits with amazing details, too much detail for some photographers who might even have to correct the blemishes captured.
The broad rubberized focusing grip of the lens feels quite nice in the hand and the fact it has no FTM (Full time manual focusing) unfortunately makes it a bit damper. The lens features two UD elements for ultra low dispersion and correcting chromatic aberrations when shooting wide. The lens is compatible with Canon’s extenders EF 1.4x and EF 2x which gives it an extended focal length however compromises with the speed of the lens
A majority of Canon’s L series (which actually means luxury series as per Canon) lenses comes with USM (ultrasonic motor) which is actually not about shooting at speeds of more than that of sound but more to do with less sound when focusing. When you compare Canon’s normal kit lenses such as the EF-S 18-55mm with the Canon EF 135mm f/2L USM, the deference becomes quite shamefully obvious. The EF-S 18-55mm or the EF-S 18-135mm can appear like a squeaky old robot trying desperately to keep up. The Canon EF 135mm f/2L USM lens on the other hand is smoother and more silkier in its sound and focusing.
One thing that needs mentioning for a prime lens this fast is the possibility of vignetting. Vignetting will be most surely be a problem if you are using a full frame body. However if you stop down the aperture this should progressively correct itself. It is always going to be a toss up between whether you should let go of the beautiful bokeh that you can get with this lens at f/2 or give it up for the vignetting on your full frame. However if you are using a crop body this problem will not be there. This lens works great with bodies such as the EOS 7D (1.6x crop) for that matter where you get a focal length of 216mm and reduced vignetting.

Canon EF 50mm f/1.2 L II USM lens
Product summary
- Model name: Canon EF 50mm f/1.2 L USM
- Release date: Aug. 24, 2006
- Available at Amazon | Adorama | B&H
Features
If you are shooting waist-up portraits while maintaining appropriate subject distance as a Full frame users you will appreciate the benefits of the 50mm focal length. on top of that, the large maximum aperture of f/1.2 delivers nice dreamy bokeh and makes subjects “pop” out of a portrait. In low light situation, photographers can also take advantage of higher shutter speeds and help prevent subject blurring caused by subject movement or camera shake.
The EF 50mm f/1.2 L USM lens is designed keeping in mind the need for photographers shooting at extremely wide apertures. At f/1.2 this is as good as one can get for a 50mm prime. Being an L lens means there is an ample amount of attention paid to the over all construction quality of the lens. EF lenses are compatible with all full frame, APS-C and APS-H Canon cameras. If you have something like the Canon 650D or any of the Rebel series Canon cameras, your effective field of view will be 80mm making it ideally suitable as a medium range lens for portraits, wedding, standard everyday photography.
The EF 50mm f/1.2 L USM has a total of 8 elements, including one glass-molded aspherical element, arranged in 6 groups and the diagonal field of view is 46˚. Auto-focusing is one of the dissatisfying aspects for the lens in spite of the fact that this is a very sharp f/1.2 lens. However the presence of full-time manual focusing means the lens can be tweaked by turning the focusing ring at any time to achieve precise focusing. Additionally the lens has USM (ultra-sonic motor) which means the lens is ultra quiet when focusing.
The lens diaphragm is made of 8 rounded blades and the maximum f-stop achievable is f/1.2. It can also stop down all the way to f/16.The overall dimensions of the lens are 3.4” x 2.6” (diameter x length) and weighs 545 grams only. The lens takes a filter size of 72mm. A plastic bayonet mount ES-78 lens hood is provided along with the lens. Available at Amazon | Adorama | B&H.

Press Release
Canon’s Two New Lenses Focus on Needs of Professional and Advanced Amateur Photographers
LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Aug. 24, 2006
The EF 50mm f/1.2 L USM Lens – Serious Glass for Serious Photographers
Canon is the only camera manufacturer to provide professionals and advanced amateurs with Digital SLRs that feature full frame sensors, such as the Canon EOS-1Ds Mark II and EOS 5D digital SLRs. The new EF 50mm f/1.2 L USM lens complements full-frame cameras, while delivering beautiful results on APS-C/H sized sensor models as well.
The EF 50mm f/1.2 L USM lens is a strong testament to Canon’s heritage of optical excellence. Every aspect of this lens exudes professional quality from its wide 72mm filter diameter to itsdust and moisture sealed construction. A high refraction glass molded aspherical lens element helps to minimize spherical aberration, which is crucial in order to provide fine detail and maximum image quality from corner to corner, even when the lens is used wide open. Full frame digital camera users will especially appreciate the benefits of the 50mm focal length, when shooting waist-up portraits while maintaining appropriate subject distance at a wedding.
The large maximum aperture of f/1.2 allows this lens to produce shallow depth of field that softens the background and makes subjects “pop” out of a portrait. Photographers can also take advantage of higher shutter speeds to shoot in lower light and help prevent blurring caused by subject movement or camera shake. In addition to a large aperture, the new lens also has blazingly fast autofocus speed and response time, thanks in part to Canon’s ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM), which quietly drives the lens. A full-time manual focus feature allows photographers to fine-tune the sharpness of their images, even when the lens is set for autofocus.
Canon designed the EF 50mm f/1.2 L USM to deliver the best possible optical quality while being tough enough to meet the needs of demanding photographers. Eight lens elements in six groups provide high resolution, while advanced coating suppresses flare and ghosting. A glass molded (GMO) aspherical element ensures maximum image quality by reducing spherical aberration and linear distortion. Dust and moisture resistant components in the lens mount, switches, and focus ring help to protect the lens in a wide variety of shooting conditions.
The powerful and fast EF 50mm f/1.2 L USM lens will be available in November for an estimated selling price of $1,599**. The compact and universal EF 70-200mm f/4 L IS USM will also be available in November for an estimated selling price of $1,249**.

Product summary
- Model name: Canon EF 35mm f/1.4 L USM Lens
- Format: Full frame
- Mount: Canon EF
- Available at Amazon | Adorama | B&H
Features
The Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L wide-angle lens is a terrific standard lens for casual photographers and photojournalists who value low-light capability and high performance. The best thing about the EF 35mm f/1.4 L USM is its fast f/1.4 aperture. This makes it perfect for shooting in a broad range of lighting conditions. Being an EF lens it is compatible with all Canon full frame DSLRs along with the 1.3x APS-H and the APS-C crop sensors. If you’re using an EOS-M mirrorless camera you could use an EOS-M adapter to work with this lens. On a 1.6x crop sensor DSLR such as a Canon Rebel T4i the field of view will be the same as a 55mm lens on a full frame such as 5D Mark III. This lens belongs to the L or the Luxury series lenses made by Canon. It has 11 elements including an aspherical element arranged in 9 lens groups.
Rear focusing elements means the lens does not extended when focusing, a real advantage when you’re into precision photography using circ. polarizers and filters. The lens also comes with USM (ultra-sonic motor) and full-time manual focusing. FTM allows the user to simply turn the focusing ring (even when set to auto) and then precisely adjust the focus manually as required. Speaking of focusing the EF 35mm f/1.4 L USM has a close focusing distance of 1 foot (0.3 meter) and a maximum reproduction 0.18x.
The 8 blade diaphragm of the lens has a maximum (wide) aperture of f/1.4 and a minimum f-stop of f/22. The dimensions of the lens are 3.1″ x 3.4″ (diameter x length) and the overall weight is 580 grams.
This lens is ideally suitable as a fixed standard focal length for portraits, street photography and even landscapes. A great tool for creative Depth of field photography.

Canon EF 24mm f/1.4 L II Press Release
United Kingdom/Republic of Ireland, 17 September, 2008: Canon today strengthens its line-up of EF-series lenses with the introduction of a new fast aperture prime lens: the EF 24mm f1.4L II USM. Replacing the EF 24mm f/1.4L USM, the EF 24mm f1.4L II USM has been completely redesigned to provide an exacting partner lens to Canon’s new EOS digital SLRs, the EOS 50D and the EOS 5D MKII.
Superior image performance
Featuring a 13-element, 10-group lens, the EF 24mm f1.4L II USM is designed to achieve the highest standards of image quality. Two high-precision GMo aspheric lenses are employed to correct various forms of aberration such as curvature of field and distortion, with a floating mechanism ensuring crisp corner-to-corner detail throughout the focal range. In addition, two UD lenses reduce the chromatic aberration common in wide-angle lenses.
A fast, ultra-large maximum aperture of f/1.4 delivers excellent low-light performance, with the circular aperture offering the potential for creative out-of-focus highlights. A focal length of 24mm and a USM focus motor providing full-time manual focus also make the EF 24mm f1.4L II USM ideal for situations where a wide-angle, high-performance lens is required.
Advanced lens coating
Reflections off a digital camera’s image sensor can compromise images with ghosting and flare. To help reduce this, the inside of EF 24mm f1.4L II USM’s front element is treated with Canon’s new Sub Wavelength structure Coating. Developed specifically to work with Canon optics, this anti-reflective coating helps reduce flare and ghosting – for consistently crisp, undistorted images.
Robust build quality
Weighing just 650g, the EF 24mm f1.4L II USM is designed to withstand the rigours of even the most testing shooting environment – with Canon’s advanced weather and dust sealing making it the perfect choice for photojournalists and landscape photographers.

Press release
United Kingdom / Republic of Ireland 20 August, 2007: Canon today releases its ultra-wide EF 14mm f/2.8L II USM lens. With the shortest focal length in Canon’s renowned professional L-series range, the lens boasts a 114 degree angle of view; exceeded only by Canon’s EF15mm f/2.8 Fisheye.
The newly designed lens incorporates aspherical and UD elements to achieve the very highest standards of image fidelity. With the latest Ultrasonic Motor for fast and accurate auto focus and the addition of dust and moisture sealing, it replaces the enormously popular EF14mm f/2.8L USM.
Availability and pricing
The EF 14mm f/2.8L II USM lens will be available from October 2007, priced at £1799.99 / €2599.99 RRP inc VAT.
The EF 14mm f/2.8L II USM lens features:
Extreme resolving power, superb contrast and sharpness across the frame through the use of aspheric and UD lens elements
Large f/2.8 aperture for low-light shooting
Latest Ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM) for fast and near silent auto focus with excellent holding torque
Full-time manual focus override via a large rubber ring that does not rotate during auto focus
Super Spectra coatings and optimised lens element shaping to suppress flare and ghosting
Large circular aperture diaphragm for good background bokeh and ‘removal’ of distracting backgrounds at wide apertures
Lens hood and pouch included in the box
L-series construction
The L-series is Canon’s flagship professional lens range, designed and built to meet the needs of the most demanding professional photographers. The optics of the EF 14mm and other L-series lenses represent the pinnacle of optical performance, enabling focal length/speed/quality combinations not readily attainable using traditional optical technologies.
New perspectives
The lens’ ultra-wide 114 degree angle of view can be used by photographers to dramatic effect. Effective for photographing buildings and other large subjects where the photographer cannot get enough distance to include everything in the frame, the EF 14mm f/2.8L II USM is also ideal for small interiors. The lens’ closest focusing distance of just 20cm allows photographers to get remarkably close to subjects for creative wide-angle shots.
Aspherical and UD elements
The EF 14mm f/2.8L II USM incorporates two aspherical lens elements to ensure high corner-to-corner sharpness throughout the focus range and at wide apertures. Pristine image quality is further assured through the incorporation of an Ultra-low Dispersion (UD) element, used to suppress chromatic aberration and associated colour fringing.
Super Spectra coatings
In addition to optimised lens shaping to reduce reflections and the use of anti-reflective material inside the lens barrel, the EF 14mm f/2.8L II USM employs Canon’s patented Super Spectra lens element coatings. These suppress flare and ghosting – more prone to occur with digital cameras due to reflection off the image sensor. By increasing light absorption, coatings reduce reflections off lens element surfaces to deliver crisp, undistorted images with natural colour balance.
The EF 14mm f/2.8L II USM includes an integrated petal hood and redesigned lens cap. In keeping with Canon’s Kyosei philosophy of living in harmony with the environment, the lens features only lead-free glass.

Features
Aspherical design
The aspherical lens design ensures consistent imaging performance throughout the entire focusing range as well as sharpness to the periphery of the image. The asphere’s more complex surface profile can reduce or eliminate spherical aberration and also reduce other optical aberrations compared to a simple lens.
Floating Elements Design
State-of-the-art camera techniques and high-resolution digital image sensors increasingly demand more from the lenses. The modern floating element design compensates aberrations of the Carl Zeiss SLR lenses at different distance settings. This is accomplished by changing the axial distance of single lens elements or element groups to each other. The adjustment of the element distance is coupled to the distance setting so that it always results in the right correction. The mechanical design of these lens elements is very complex and the workmanship must be particularly exact – both
Virtually distortion-free optics
Dramatic perspectives and a view from extraordinary image angles – SLR lenses from Carl Zeiss open up new composition possibilities. Distortion would disrupt the composition because straight lines, whose image does not go through the image center, would be reproduced with a curved shape. This annoying effect is accordingly and largely compensated through elaborate optical designs at all focal lengths.

Features
The 60D is an interesting camera in the Canon line up upper entry level crop bodies. It is priced interestingly too right between the 7D and the 600D which makes it something of a choice for a serious amateur. But trying to look at the features of the camera one is going to find several good features of both the world (an entry level DSLR and that of a semi-pro body).
Build quality
Let’s talk about the build quality first. The 60D is made of plastic. Unlike the 7D which is made of magnesium alloy material this one feels a bit less secure in the hands. But don’t take it otherwise; there is absolutely no reason to be frowning. If you’re looking for a perfectly weather sealed body then something like the K5 or the K30 from Pentax’s stable or even the 7D from Canon itself should be better suited at a slightly higher budget. Similarly if you need something that can withstand a few knock and bumps then the 7D is better suited because of its magnesium alloy body. But the 60D is a better build body than the 600D. If you happen to be looking for a decent upper entry level camera then the 60D should be more than enough for your needs.
Sensor & megapixels
The 60D is build around an APS-C 18 megapixels sensor that the 550D and the 600D shares. So for megapixels wise this one is not going to be much of an appeal to consumers more than any of the other models mentioned in this paragraph. But more megapixels necessary does not mean better pictures. So unless you’re in product or professional photography, you don’t need any more megapixels than this.
Performance
Looking at the noise performance of the 60D there is nothing much to really revel about. As a pretender of being a predecessor to the 50D this one is not something that is utterly delicious to drool about. At 6400 the pictures are still usable albeit for Internet. But if you’re inclined on printing them, stay within 1600 or roundabouts.
Compatible Lenses
The 60D supports both EF and EF-S lenses.
Viewfinder
The viewfinder is an eye level pentaprism. For those who do not know the difference between a pentaprism and a pentamirror, the later only mimics the functionalities of a pentaprism and offers a slightly dim view through the OVF. The 60D OVF gives 96% coverage, not something that a pro shooter will like but then this camera is not meant for pro-shooters.
AF system
9 point (All cross type) AF system is not something to really jump for joy. In fact this is the same as the 550D and the 600D and less than even the D3200 from Nikon. Canon has provided a tilting swiveling screen that allows the user to shoot at seemingly impossible angles. Does it make sense? Absolutely. This is something that even Nikon is adopting for its cameras (D5100).
Additional Features
Making accurate composition more convenient, the EOS 60D’s optical viewfinder provides 96 percent coverage along with Canon’s built-in single axis Electronic Level Display, which utilizes the exposure level scale below the picture area to let the photographer know when the camera is level. The Electronic Level Display is also visible on the camera’s LCD screen in both Live View and Movie modes. An artificial horizon display illustrates horizontal roll, allowing the photographer to know when the camera is in a fixed level position. The entire camera has been durability-tested to 100,000 exposures making the EOS 60D a reliable as well as a powerful imaging tool.
The final verdict
Overall the 60D is a good camera and is a value for money, but if you have a need for shooting only stills go for some cheaper models and save some money.

Features
The EOS 7D Features Fast 8 FPS Continuous Shooting, Class-Leading 18-Megapixel Resolution and Full HD Video Recording with Variable Frame Rates and Manual Exposure Control. Although Canon has tagged the 60D as the spiritual successor of the famed 50D, the 7D is more of a biological descendant of the plasticky and tag touchy crop body. what we have in he 7D is a phenomenal camera, well-built, weather sealed, supremely high performance with great auto-focus, more AF points that some of the higher full frame bodies; albeit in a crop body.
The build quality
The 7D has been built to withstand not only the vagaries of nature but also the hands of a clumsy photographer (no disrespect). It is probably good enough for a few knocks and bumps but that should not inspire you to drive your SUV over it. It is well built with a magnesium alloy body and feels strong and secure in the hands. The best thing is it is weather sealed so you don’t need a rain check each time you wish to sling the camera around your neck.
AF points and AF system
The 7D locks focus faster than even the professional 5D Mark II. With 19 AF points you can be absolutely sure about the precise focusing that it can deliver, and it does most of the times. The camera is compatible with both the standard lenses and the USM lenses that Canon has offering near silent focusing with the later. Night time performance in extremely low light conditions is also acceptable and while there is no comparison between some of the full frame EOS models this is perfect for most shooting needs.
Viewfinder
100% field of view is what you can expect with the optical view finder of the 7D. The view finder is very beautiful bright and takes the full advantage of the pentaprism type that gives it an advantage over many other APS-C crop bodies in the market.
Sensor & megapixels
The 7D is built around an 18 megapixels APS-C sized CMOS sensor with DIGIC 4 image processing system.
Image quality
Over all image quality is extremely great. The 7D boasts an impressive continuous drive mode of 8 fps. If you’re a sports photographer, you could take advantage of the 7D’s impressive 320 image continuous JPEG burst rate and the 24 images continuous RAW burst rates. Low light performance is also respectable especially if you compare some of the other comparable crop bodes such as the Nikon D300S or even the Pentax K-7. however if you compare the performance with some of the other full frame cameras in the EOS range such as the 5D Mark II or the latest 5D Mark III performance will be slightly off.
Pop-up flash
The 7D comes with a pop-up flash something that even the EOS 5D Mark II does not have. While this is not a caparison between the two cameras and they are designed for two different segments of users, the pop-up flash does add a bit of flexibility in the hands of a serious photographer.
Canon EOS 7D firmware v2 added new features
- Improved maximum burst for RAW images (up to 25)
- In-camera RAW image editing
- In-camera Image Rating
- In-camera JPEG resizing
- Maximum Auto ISO setting (ISO 400-6400)
- Manual audio level adjustment in movie recording
- GPS compatibility
- File name customisation
- Time zone settings
- Faster scrolling of magnified images
- Quick control screen during playback
- New firmware available for download here
Recommendations
The 7D is a strongly built and value for money camera. It has an impressive performance across most lighting conditions and is respectable even at ISO 12800. Additionally the buttons and features should appeal to a pro shooter who is comfortable with buttons and hates GUI. Overall this is a great camera to buy and should be one of the top two-three APS-C bodies currently available.
