Features Include:
DoF Viewer is an application used to calculate the depth of field (DoF) as well as the Angle of View (AoV).
It also calculates the hyperfocal distance, the near and far boundaries for acceptable sharpness (near focus and far focus).
A new function gives an indication of the amount of background blur.
The application is Universal, it means it can run on both iPhone and iPad.
The originality of the application is its graphical interface that allows the user to view
the depth of field values on all the aperture range without having to change a new setting.
The user can quickly realize the influence of its setting, and other possibilities it has to manage the depth of field.
The application is very simple to use, only two parameters require configuration:
– The type of camera used (A database of over 250 cameras is available)
– The unit of measurement (metric or imperial)
The user configures its shooting parameters with 2 “sliders”.
– The focal length (focal) between 8mm and 1200mm
– Distance shooting (Distance)
The depth of field is calculated in “real time”.
Thanks to a “moving” window, DoF Viewer gives the value of the hyperfocal, the depth of field (DOF), the minimum and maximum distance of acceptable sharpness zone (Near Focus Far Focus) for each f-stop.
And this without any button! Simply with a “vertical” swipe on the workspace.
A «tap» on one of the DoF row will display the new view : The visualization of the amount of background blur (or degree of fuzziness ). With this new graph you can analyze how blurred areas are represented on the picture and estimate both the degree and the quality of unsharpness. The graph represents the variation of the blur spot size in function of the distance.
A “Tab” provides access to the calculation of the angle of view
The angle of View is given in degrees it represents the angle covered by the lens (horizontal, vertical and diagonal)
The field of view is given in meters (feet) it represents the distance covered by the lens for a given distance.
Another view is used to display the depth of field in another way!
This “bar graph” view shows the depth of field for the entire range of f-stop
The user can configure the aperture scale from of f/1 to f/64 with full-stop, one-half-stop and one-third-stop f-number.
The distance scale is also configurable to suit the type of lens used (wide or tele)
Beware though it is possible to configure a 1200mm lens with a focusing point at 5 cm, DoF Viewer does not check the consistency of the parameters entered by the user!
An “Expert” mode is available to calculate the circle of confusion
This calculation eliminates the criterion of Zeiss and can estimate the depth of field with respect to the final image (enlargment).
Help section explaining the concept of “expert CoC” is accessible from the application
With The iPad version it is possible to compare two different types of configuration

Press release
Focusing on the essentials of M rangefinder photography
Leica Camera has introduced the Leica M (Typ 262) into its digital rangefinder camera range, joining the Leica M and M-P (Typ 240) and the Leica M Monochrom (Typ 246), now giving photographers the choice of four models.
Incorporating rangefinder technology perfected over many decades, the new M (Typ 262) represents Leica M photography in its purest form, concentrating on the most essential features, combined with intuitive handling and discreet styling. This allows users to focus on the fascination of M photography and, ultimately, on capturing the decisive moment.
As with the other digital M cameras, the Leica M (Typ 262) features a high-resolution CMOS full-frame sensor, designed exclusively for rangefinder photography, but excludes video recording and Live View. The 24-megapixel sensor delivers exceptional image quality and extreme sensitivity, and makes the Leica M (Typ 262) the ideal camera for photography in available light situations. At the same time, the camera’s Maestro processor guarantees fast processing of captured images, ensuring that it is immediately ready to shoot.
The clear and practical outer design of the Leica M (Typ 262) also focuses on the essentials. The top plate is made from durable aluminium, making the camera around 100g lighter, and even more ergonomic than its sister models. The words ’Made in Germany’ are engraved on the back of the camera. Further differences include a smaller Leica logo and a ‘step’ at the end of the top plate, which are both features reminiscent of the design of the Leica M9.
For maximum discretion when shooting, the Leica M (Typ 262) shutter is barely audible – an invaluable advantage in situations where the photographer needs to remain unobtrusive. As an aid to this, the camera features a shutter cocking system that is considerably quieter in single exposure mode than that of the M (Typ 240), and enables a shutter release frequency of up to two frames per second. In continuous mode, the M (Typ 262) has the same sequential shooting speed as its sister model and shoots up to three frames per second.
The handling of the Leica M (Typ 262) fulfills everything a discerning photographer expects from a Leica M. This includes the rapid manual focusing process with the coupled rangefinder and the focusing ring of the lens, as well as the option of selecting automatically determined or manually set shutter speeds. Furthermore, as this model does not include Live View or video recording, the menu is extremely straightforward and consists of only two pages. This ensures that all settings are rapidly accessible at all times. White balance is selected by a dedicated button on the back of the camera.

Nikon D3300 Dynamic Range & ISO Performance Test
Nikon D3300 is the youngest of Nikon DSLR lineup. And the cheapest as well. As an entry level model it doesn’t have many pro features but still shines as a very good performer when comes to image quality. The 24 megapixel APS-C sensor can take beautiful images if you use it wisely. The images shown here are all shot in RAW (NEF) format then processed in Nikon Capture NX-D.
Exposure Tolerance & Dynamic Range
A camera with good sensor can capture images with high dynamic range. Most of the recently released Nikon DSLR’s are excellent in this regard. The image below was taken with proper exposure at ISO 100. The color and tonal range of this shot is quite decent. But in many situation either due to improper camera setting or difficult lighting condition we have to depend on post processing to recover the shadow or highlight detail. The next image was deliberately overexposed by 3 stop. The Nikon D3300’s sensor was able to recover reasonable amount of color and tonal range. Take a look at the histogram to understand how much the sensor can recover detail from overexposed portion of the image.
If we take a look at our badly exposed images, we will see that most are underexposed. The D3300 is excellent in recovering shadow detail. The following two images shows its remarkable performance. The first image was underexposed by 3 stop. At first watching the histogram you can tell there is very little to recover. But increasing the exposure in Nikon Capture NX-D everything comes back to life. And the recovered image is good enough considering situation.
To test the limit I under exposed an image by 6 stop. But even at this extreme the Nikon D3300 sensor has something to show. As you can see from the histogram it has almost no data at all to construct something visible. Pushing the exposure slider to the right I was able to rescue the whole image. Although there is banding and loss of tonality, it is better than nothing.
ISO Performance Test
The Nikon D3300 has a ISO range of 100 to 12800 which can be boosted up to 25600. At ISO 400 or lower the image quality is very good. The noise pattern from ISO 800 to 1600 is good enough for taking decent image. Above ISO 1600 image gets softer due to noise. The good thing about Nikon D3300 is its ability to keep chromatic noise under control. The test images posted here are 100% crop to reveal the actual noise pattern at various ISO.
