Fujifilm X100T - Back

Advanced Hybrid Viewfinder with Electronic Rangefinder
The FUJIFILM X100T uses an improved Advanced Hybrid Viewfinder with Electronic Rangefinder that allows focusing as if using a mechanical rangefinder. While in optical viewfinder mode, pushing the OVF / EVF switching lever to the left will switch the viewfinder to electronic rangefinder mode. Additionally, Focus Peak Highlight and Digital Split Image can be selected, and the magnification of the focused area can be changed. Compared to the X100S, the frame coverage in the X100T has been increased from 90% to 92%, and the field of view can now be accurately checked closer to the actual subject. The X100T also uses Real-time parallax correction for more accurate image composition. Reframing after bringing the image into focus is no longer necessary, allowing for a seamless shooting experience.

Photographers also now have access to Shooting Effect Reflection settings within the Hybrid Viewfinder to recreate selected camera effects, including Film Simulations. When turned off, users can see the natural view. The image within the finder is displayed at the maximum frame when shooting under dim light and dark areas such as night scenes, enabling shooting while looking at a smooth image, all while greatly reducing display lag time.

Range of controls expanded, upgraded body
The FUJIFILM X100T now allows photographers to set the aperture to 1/3 steps using the aperture ring, while the exposure compensation dial has been extended to ±3 stops. Also, the command lever has been changed to a command dial, and through the adoption of a 4-way controller to improve operability. The X100T is also now equipped with 7 customizable Fn buttons for a truly personal shooting experience.

The FUJIFILM X100T has an upgraded body that is die-cast magnesium on the top surface and bottom of the body for a highly durable and functional design. The X100T’s aperture ring, shutter speed dial, and exposure compensation dial now have a groove shaped pattern for an improved feel and grip. The X100T also features a high-definition 1.04M-dot 3″ LCD has for extraordinary visibility.

New “Classic Chrome” film simulation
Fujifilm’s unprecedented image quality has been cultivated through the development of photographic films over the past 80 years and helps to reproduce warm skin tones, bright blue skies and rich green trees, just as photographers remember the scene. The X100T ships with the new ‘Classic Chrome’ film simulation mode, which delivers muted tones and deep color reproduction.

Newest Otus Family Member from ZEISS Continues the Success Story

ZEISS Otus 1.4/85 expands lens family with another focal length for the highest level of professional image quality

OBERKOCHEN/Germany, 08/09/2014.

Given its focal length and speed, at first glance the new ZEISS Otus 1.4/85 appears to be a traditional portrait lens. But a closer look reveals that this is a fast all-rounder for photographers who do not accept any limitations when it comes to detail – whether it is for general studio work, or fashion, advertising, product or architectural photography. In combination with modern DSLR cameras, this lens delivers unprecedented image quality – even with an open aperture. ZEISS will present this new world-class lens for the first time to the public at photokina in Cologne/Germany from September 16 to 21, 2014.

The ZEISS Otus 1.4/85 displays all of its advantages in the classic short telephoto range, i.e. portraits and people. Its focal length, longer than a normal lens, makes it possible to keep a decent distance from the subject. Photographers who like using a landscape not just as a background will find that the ZEISS Otus 1.4/85 is no ‘normal’ lens, but a surprisingly powerful companion for nature photography. The edges of the picture can be used for compositional purposes at all f-stops.

Unique creative possibilities can be achieved for pictures even with little ambient light. Today’s image sensors are extremely sensitive with little noise, which has significantly pushed the limits of what is possible even without artificial light. Fast lenses such as the ZEISS Otus 1.4/85 still offer enormous benefits compared with lenses that are two or three f-stops slower, especially when weak light meets fast-moving objects. Even when the light disappears completely, the ZEISS Otus 1.4/85 retains its excellent “vision”, just like the owl species from which this lens family gets its name. Lenses reveal correction deficits very clearly with night shots with lots of open light sources that dominate the image. Not so with the ZEISS Otus 1.4/85: in challenging lighting situations with low ambient light, the performance edge of this lens becomes obvious.

The ZEISS Otus family of lenses and its newest member have been specially designed to meet professional photographers’ most rigorous demands. Inner focusing, the dial window, and the dials’ clearly recognizable yellow labeling, familiar from professional cine lenses like ARRI/ZEISS Master Prime, are just a few of the features that are setting new standards.

ZEISS Otus 1.4:85 Lens

Optically, the ZEISS Otus series stands out for its high image quality, even with an open aperture. Specifically, that means a neutral bokeh in the background, highly detailed images without any optical artifacts, consistently high resolution power across the entire image field, no color fringing or distortion, and an extremely high image contrast all the way into the edges. The imaging performance remains almost entirely consistent for all shooting distances. High apertures can be used even for close-ups right down to a working distance of 0.65 meters.

Particularly when used in combination with high-definition 35mm DSLR cameras, ZEISS Otus lenses achieve a medium-format quality never previously achieved. In other words: lower investments, more compact gear and imaging excellence.

A view inside the ZEISS Otus 1.4/85 reveals how such quality is realized: The lens consists of eleven lens elements in nine groups. One of the lens elements has an aspheric optical surface and six are made of special glass. The optical design is based on the Planar. Because the ZEISS Otus 1.4/85 is apochromatic, chromatic diagonal aberrations (longitudinal chromatic aberrations) are corrected with the help of lens elements made of special glass with anomalous partial dispersion. As a result, practically no perceptible color fringing appears on contrast-rich edges in front of and behind the focal plane. Bright-dark transitions in the image, and in particular highlights, are rendered free of color artifacts. In addition, the variable air spaces between certain lens groups (“floating elements design”) enable a consistently high imaging performance across the entire focusing range from 0.8 m to infinity.

ZEISS Otus 1.4:85 specs

All members of the ZEISS Otus family are characterized by the exceptional mechanical quality that sophisticated photographers are used to from ZEISS. As they were designed as manual focus lenses, it was possible to work with considerably narrower tolerances in the construction. Its smooth focus operation with the large angle of rotation allows for the finest variations when focusing. The freedom to focus – one of the most important creative elements in photography – has literally been put in the hands of the photographer as an artistic tool. The extra-fine haptics and the precision of the focusing mechanism can only be achieved with a metal design. The robust all-metal barrel is also well equipped to deal with the rough daily work of a professional photographer, ensuring a long product life. In contrast to lenses containing a lot of plastic, which can become unbalanced over time, the metal ZEISS Otus lenses remain stable for many years. This ensures that the image quality remains consistently high. And for all photographers who in addition to the actual optics also rely on screw-on filters in their work, matching T* UV and POL filters with a diameter of 86 millimeters will be available from ZEISS for the ZEISS Otus 1.4/85.

In the fall of 2013, ZEISS presented the ZEISS Otus 1.4/55, the first representative of a high-end SLR lens series with manual focusing. This has since fulfilled its promise to be “the best standard lens on the market”. Both the trade press and users were impressed.

Newest Otus family member from ZEISS continues the success story Zuwachs in der Otus Familie von ZEISS setzt Erfolgsgeschichte fort

“When we launched the Otus 1.4/55, our customers immediately understood the benefits they can get from such a lens: using their high-end full-frame camera, they can shoot pictures with a quality and look they were previously only used to getting from expensive medium-format systems,” explains Christophe Casenave, Product Manager, ZEISS Camera Lenses. “With the Otus 1.4/85 we are now bringing out the second lens with this promise. Again with the Otus 1.4/85 we can say that this is a lens without any compromise on image quality. Contrast and resolution power are at the maximum level; there are no chromatic aberrations, even in the most challenging light situations; and there’s no distortion, ghosting or flare. And all of this at any aperture. When you use an Otus lens, you can focus on the composition of your images. You don’t need to spend any time thinking about whether the technology could possibly be a limiting factor.”

The ZEISS Otus 1.4/85 will be available worldwide with EF-mount (ZE) and F-mount (ZF.2) from mid-September 2014. The expected recommended retail price is €3,360.50* or US$ 4,490* (excl. VAT).

THE NEW SMART: OLYMPUS PEN E-PL7® FLIPS THE SELFIE REVOLUTION 180 DEGREES

Capture, Connect and Create: 180-Degree Downward Flip LCD, Easy Self Portrait Mode and Advanced Performance in an Interchangeable Lens Camera for the Smart Phone User

CENTER VALLEY, Pa., August 28, 2014 — Olympus makes it easier than ever to shoot and share your stories in brilliant detail with the new PEN E-PL7®, an interchangeable-lens camera in a portable, compact and lightweight body, with a premium design. Featuring a new 180-degree downward flip touch LCD, Selfie-dedicated mode and built-in Wi-Fi®, combined with the enhanced Olympus Image Share app (OI.Share™), the PEN E-PL7 gives users the power to easily upload and share images instantly using their mobile devices.

Olympus PEN E-PL7 - Flash

Outstanding Image Quality
The Olympus PEN E-PL7 features much of the same technology as Olympus’s award-winning OM-D® line of cameras for a level of performance that rivals that of high-end interchangeable-lens cameras. The TruePic VII image processor combines with a 16.05 megapixel Live MOS sensor and M.ZUIKO® lenses to deliver beautiful image quality with high resolution, superior color reproduction and high sensitivity, all in a portable, compact and lightweight body, with the same high-level design and build quality of the PEN flagship, the E-P5.

The in-body 3-axis VCM image stabilization system is derived from the Olympus OM-D E-M10®. This powerful technology compensates for horizontal and vertical angular shifts (yam and pitch) as well as camera shake along the optical axis (roll) which is especially common in one-handed shooting scenarios. With the in-body image stabilization mechanism, camera shake can be prevented with any lens, allowing users to take beautiful, dynamic images, all the time.

Olympus PEN E-PL7

Speed
The on-board FAST AF is Olympus’s fastest-ever AF system and uses 81 points that cover the whole image. Small AF Target and Super Spot AF modes make it possible to zoom in and focus accurately on small sections of the frame. The E-PL7 is also capable of capturing high-speed action with 8fps sequential shooting, the fast processor supports continuous capture of up to 20 RAW frames or an unlimited number of JPEG frames, and the Continuous Auto Focus with Tracking mode accurately tracks and captures moving subject as fast as 3.5 fps.

Olympus PEN E-PL7 - LCD

One-Touch Self Portraits
The 3-inch, 1.04 million-dot high-definition touch LCD monitor automatically turns into a mirror display and activates into its “Selfie Mode” when tilted downward in the 180-degree position, perfect for one-touch selfies. The shutter-release button appears on the screen so subjects can frame the image appropriately, shooting one second after the button is touched, and capturing beautiful selfies that could not have been captured with a smart phone alone. Selfie interval shooting provides a fun way to capture images with a custom self-timer switching button that defaults to deliver three shots at one second intervals, giving subjects time to strike different poses. When an electronic zoom lens is attached, the zoom automatically adjusts to the wide-angle position so that the user can quickly take their shot, incorporating the background as well.

Olympus PEN E-PL7 - LCD rotation

The E-PL7’s built-in flash helps users take beautiful selfies against nighttime backgrounds, and e-Portrait can be activated with a single touch for more beautiful skin textures. iAuto has also been enhanced with selfies in mind: Portrait settings have been added to common scene modes to automatically detect 42 types of scenes to match the subject and optimize for the ideal image.

Olympus PEN E-PL7 - LCD Panel

Easy Smart Phone Connection
The Olympus PEN E-PL7 includes built-in Wi-Fi, and connecting to a smart phone is simple. Using the Olympus Image Share app, along with a smart phone, and quickly scanning the QR code displayed on the camera’s LCD, the smart phone syncs with the Wi-Fi network created by the camera. OI.Share shooting functions have evolved, making it possible to easily operate the custom self-timer for sequential and selfie interval shooting. Live View can be displayed on the smart phone, and the camera can be controlled by touching the smart phone display as if it were the camera itself, then users can send selected images to their smart device for immediate sharing on social media sites.

Expanded OI.Share Capability
OI.Share has been enhanced with a number of remote shooting functions to expand the use of a variety of selfie options. Settings for single, sequential high and sequential low switching button, as well as controls for the timer bar and interval shooting, can all be easily accessed remotely on the user’s smart phone. A new movie button lets you quickly record a movie at customized settings, including customized time length for each movie clip. Live Bulb has been added to OI.Share, allowing users the ability to control and monitor the bulb photography process on a smart phone while the shutter is released. Images can also be geotagged through the OI.Share App, giving users a record of all of their adventures.

Camera Creativity
The PEN E-PL7 is equipped with several new creative features, including two new Art Filters. The “Vintage” art filter transfers everyday images into a photo that looks to have withstood the test of time, and “Partial Color” enables users to utilize an intuitive color ring to leave certain colors in an image while other colors are converted to monochrome to emphasize specific parts of a photo or subjects (18 colors are available). “Shade Effect” is a new art effect that adds bands of shadows on the left and right, or top and bottom of the image. Photo Story has also been expanded to include Layout mode for a photo-album-style arrangement. “Panning” is a new scene mode that matches the E-PL7’s movement to the subjects so users can track it for the optimal panning effect. And finally, a new movie effect, “Old Film Effect,” records video to look like old movies shot on film by adding noise, scratches and dust effects.

For photographers who prefer composing their shots using an eyepiece, the E-PL7 is compatible with the optional high-definition VF-4 viewfinder that provides an impressive 1.48X magnification, a 2.36 million-dot LCD, eye-detect to turn it on at the right time, and intuitive functionality that enables real-time viewing of shooting conditions.

Olympus PEN E-PL7 - Back

New Micro Four Thirds® Lens and Accessories
Olympus is also introducing a black version of its popular M.ZUIKO DIGITAL 12mm F2.0 lens. This high-speed, single-focal-length, wide-angle lens, which was previously only available in silver, is ideal for shooting high-quality, dramatic landscapes and street scenes in low-light conditions. It has a beautiful full-metal body and a snap ring that enables photographers to pan focus with a distance indicator.

A genuine leather body jacket made especially for the OLYMPUS PEN E-PL7, the CS-45B, will also cover the camera’s grip. In addition to the utility of protecting the camera body from damage, it also offers a robust feel, thanks to the luxuriousness and craftsmanship that comes with the use of genuine leather. The jacket is available in light brown, brown, and black, and matches the new Genuine Leather Lens Cover LS-60.5GL (compatible with the M.Zuiko 14-42mm f3.5-5.6 EZ lens) and is a great complement to the Genuine Leather Neck Strap CSS-S109LLII, which is already available. The special snap buttons are used to attach the jacket to the body, making the jacket smooth and easy to remove. The jacket can also be quickly removed when you want to use a tripod or insert or remove batteries or an SD card. You can also take selfies even with the jacket attached.

A waterproofing case optimized for the OLYMPUS PEN E-PL7, the PT-EP12, rated to handle water pressure down to 45m. works with the M.Zuiko Digital ED 14-42mm f3.5-5.6 EZ, M.Zuiko Digital ED 12mm f2.0, M.Zuiko Digital 17mm f1.8, M.Zuiko Digital 25mm f1.8, and M.Zuiko Digital 45mm f1.8.

Compatible with the external flash bundled with the E-PL7, you’ll be ready for underwater photography with the PT-EP12. You can also now switch to underwater mode using the arrow pad, allowing you to concentrate on taking photos stress-free even underwater. An even greater variety of underwater photos can be taken if you use the Underwater Macro Converter PTMC-01 or the Underwater Wide Converter PTWC-01, both of which can be attached directly. A brand new dedicated underwater flash, the UFL-3, operates with high-performance, is compact and reaches a guide number of GN22. With a charging time of approximately two seconds, this flash is pressure resistant to water at a depth of 75m. It’s compatible with the wireless flash controller and is bundled with a dedicated diffuser. This is a next-generation all-in-one underwater photography system that condenses all of the options needed for underwater shooting in a compact body.

A new lithium-ion battery BLS-50 with increased capacity, from 1150 mAh (BLS-5) to 1210 mAh (BLS-50), replaces the BLS-5. The BLS-50 is the same shape as the BLS-5 and can be used in Olympus models that support it.

Features

Vision and speed

The new FUJIFILM X30 uses an innovative Real Time Viewfinder with a large magnification of 0.65x*2 and a display lag time of just 0.005*3 seconds that is the largest and fastest viewfinder in its class. It offers a clear, high-definition Live View with a new 2.36M-dot organic EL viewfinder and dedicated lens that improves visibility by automatically controlling the viewfinder’s brightness according to the ambient light levels. The Live View display can also be set to reflect shooting conditions, or offer a natural view close to what is seen with the naked eye, while the viewfinder’s eye sensor automatically switches the visible information when the camera is positioned vertically or horizontally.

Fujifilm X30 - TopThe FUJIFILM X30 uses the award-winning X-Trans CMOS II sensor with phase-detection AF and the EXR Processor II to give photographers high-speed performance, amazing resolution and low noise for extraordinary images. The X30’s phase-detection system focuses in just 0.06*4 seconds, has a startup time of 0.5 seconds*5, shutter time lag of 0.015 seconds, and shooting interval of 0.5 seconds.

Fujifilm X30 - BackHigh precision F2.0-2.8 4x manual barrel zoom lens

The FUJIFILM X30’s lens is made up of 11 glass elements in nine groups, including three aspherical lens elements and two ED lens elements. The result is an ultra-bright lens with a wide-angle maximum aperture of f/2.0 and telephoto maximum aperture of f/2.8 for beautiful, high resolution images. Additionally, the X30’s lens incorporates seven diaphragm blades for stunningly soft ‘bokeh’ to make your subject stand out from the background.

The X30 has an optical 4x manual zoom lens that allows quick and precise control over composition. The X30 also has a unique image stabilization mechanism that shifts five lens elements to compensate for camera shake by up to four stops*6. The innovative image stabilization system also effectively prevents motion blur while stopping vignetting and loss of image resolution that usually results from shake compensation.

The new FUJIFILM X30 now includes two rings on the lens: a manual zoom ring and control ring. The control ring is positioned behind the manual zoom control and allows the immediate change of aperture and shutter speed settings while fine-tuning image composition. Functions such as ISO sensitivity, film simulation, white balance and continuous shooting can be assigned by pushing the control ring setting button at the front. Two top-plate dials and six function buttons positioned on the back of the body also offer faster access to regularly-used features for a more instinctive operation.

Press Release

New Mirrorless Camera Features Remarkable AF speed and tracking, 24 MP APS-C Size Sensor, BIONZ X™ Processor and more

SAN DIEGO, Aug. 17, 2014 – Sony Electronics has today introduced the stylish new α5100 camera, a new model packing pro-quality AF performance and image quality into a portable, lightweight package.

The speedy new camera (model ILCE-5100) features the same Fast Hybrid AF system as the acclaimed α6000 model, which allows it to acquire focus in as little as 0.07 seconds1.  It also shares the α6000’s image sensor – a 24.3 MP APS-C Exmor™ CMOS sensor – and powerful BIONZ X processor.  This impressive combination of hardware ensures that the camera can capture still images and full HD videos in sharp focus with incredible detail.

Sony Alpha a5100

Unique to the new α5100 is its extremely compact design, placing it among the smallest and lightest interchangeable lens cameras in market today.
“Sony continues to innovate in the mirrorless camera space, offering products that are not only smaller and lighter than competitive DSLRs, but that consistently outperform them,” said Neal Manowitz, director of the interchangeable lens camera business at Sony.  “The new α5100 is a primary example, offering world-class AF speed and performance in a palm-sized body at a great price.  It’s powerful enough to satisfy the most experienced DSLR shooters, yet not too intimidating for the casual weekend photographer.”

Sony Alpha a5100 - White

Fast Hybrid AF system

Borrowing from the award-winning α6000, the compelling Fast Hybrid AF system on the new α5100 camera features focal plane phase-detection AF points with an extremely wide autofocus coverage area (179 focal points) that is teamed with high-precision contrast-detection AF.  This potent combination allows the camera to accurately track and respond to a subject moving through nearly the entire frame, whether shooting still images or full HD videos.

Additionally, the α5100 camera has an extremely responsive touch screen which works with the AF system to enable Touch Focus, allowing shooters to focus by simply touching the intended subject on any area of the LCD screen – even if it’s at the far edges.

The new α5100 model also comes equipped with Eye AF and Lock-on AF functions that debuted in the α7/ α7R, a Flexible Spot AF area function, and AF-A mode (automatic switching between AF-C and AF-S) that is also offered in the α6000.

Sony Alpha a5100 - Back

HD Video Performance

The versatile α5100 supports full HD video shooting  in AVCHD as well as the  XAVC S2 codec, which records video at a high data rate of 50 Mbps with advanced compression for impressive video quality.  XAVC S paired with the advanced focusing system of the α5100 makes for a compelling HD video shooting solution that only a select number of cameras in market today – mirrorless or DSLR – can offer.

The new camera also features dual video recording, allowing it to simultaneously record two files – one in Full HD (AVCHD or XAVC S) and the other in lower resolution MP4 format – to a single installed SD card2.  This gives videographers a high-quality file for viewing on large screens or working on in post-processing, as well as a smaller, lower data-rate version that is ideal for uploading and sharing.

Sony Alpha a5100 - Side

Design, Controls, Wi-Fi® and New Accessories

The compact new mirrorless camera features a high resolution 921k dot WhiteMagic™ LCD screen that can tilt a full 180 degrees upright, ideal for self-portraits.  On top of the camera body, there’s a zoom lever for convenient one-handed camera operation and a handy pop-up flash for tough lighting conditions.

The α5100 camera has built-in Wi-Fi, giving consumers one-touch connection with Xperia® or NFC-compatible Android™ smartphones or tablets for instant image transfer and sharing.  A single touch also activates Smart Remote Control, giving users a live image preview through their compatible smartphone or tablet, and allowing them to use the smart device to release the camera’s shutter.

Sony Alpha a5100 - Card Slot

For devices without NFC one-touch capabilities, users can wirelessly transfer images and videos and activate Smart Remote Control through Sony’s free PlayMemories Mobile™ application, available for the iOS and Android platforms.

The camera is also compatible with downloadable Sony PlayMemories Camera Apps, adding a range of exciting and creative capabilities.  Currently there are a total of 10 different applications available with several others to be released this spring.  Learn more at www.sony.net/pmca .
New accessories that are compatible with the α5100 camera include the style-matching LCS-EBD body case – available in three color variations – as well as the compact, easy-to-carry RM-SPR1 remote.

Pricing and Availability

The Sony α5100 compact interchangeable lens camera will be available in September 2014 in black and white in a kit with a compact, versatile 16-50mm motorized zoom lens (model SELP1650) for about $700, or as body-only for about $550. The new camera and all compatible lenses and accessories will be available at Sony retail stores (www.store.sony.com) and other authorized dealers nationwide.

4 Tips For Taking Amazing Wedding Photos

A Post By: Andre Smith

Wedding photographers are in high demand, and standing out in such a crowded field is essential to landing lucrative clients. To do that, you’ll want to have a portfolio that stands out from the pack. Read on for four simple and effective tips to help make the wedding photos that you take look amazing.

wedding-featured
1) Look past the classics. It’s tempting to plan for the so-called classic wedding moments like the blushing bride marching down the aisle. Keep your eyes open for moments to capture that tell the emotional story in a new way. The only way to find those shots is keen observation. In wedding photography, what is important is not only capturing an iconic image, but how you capture that image. Experiment with depth of field and composition, and aim to capture an emotion instead of just an image – this will make your photo more than iconic. You’ll also make it elegant.

wedding2

2) Be unobtrusive but stay close. While an inconspicuous style might seem to lend itself to the use of a long lens, that’s not always the case. Weddings are a crowded space by their very nature. Long lenses are great for garden weddings, but they are not the end-all and be-all tool for capturing guests standing shoulder to shoulder or setting up a shot of people admiring the bride’s wedding ring.

It’s best to get in tight with a fast and flattering 50 mm lens. If your camera sensor is smaller than full size you’re basically working with the rough equivalent of a 65 mm lens set up on a 35 mm camera. Save your wide angle lens for special situations because most of the time, wide angle lenses aren’t flattering to the figure.

wedding1

3) Work quick and work loose. The best wedding photos are those that capture real moments. The best way to capture real moments is not forcing them. Even taking group shots of the wedding party shouldn’t take more than 11 minutes. 11 minutes is really about the longest amount of time a group of people can stand and pose – any longer than that and the group will start to look bored and artificial. Don’t let perfect be the enemy of the real. Give just enough direction to help your subjects relax. There is an art to helping make people feel comfortable. For example, try speaking in a gentle, almost Alec Baldwin-like sotto voice. Try putting people at ease by giving compliments.

wedding4

4) Keep the eyes sharp. When you shoot in low light you also get a low depth of field. That means you want to take care as to what you keep sharp. The most important thing to keep sharp when photographing people is a person’s eyes. For example, if you are shooting a couple where one person is closer to the camera than the other, make sure that you aim your lens about a third of the way or so behind the nearest point that you want to keep in focus.

3 Simple Tips To Print High Quality Photos Using Your Home Printer

A Post By: Romeo Demes

Tips To Print High Quality Photos Using Your Home Printer

If you are a professional photographer or an budding enthusiast, you might find joy in printing all your best captures to showcase in your home, or show off you skills to people. Sometimes the prints might not look as crisp and vibrant as they look on a digital display. There are several factors that affects the quality of a hard copy.

Tips To Print High Quality Photos-2

The resolution of the photo, the quality of parchment you want to print on, capability and quality of the printer, printer settings, etc. This article mainly target users who currently don’t have a photo printer or simply couldn’t afford one, and wish to print high quality pictures using a normal inkjet printer they have at home. A lot of members here might already know of some of the tips and tricks we are going to share down below, but we think it would be helpful to a lot of newbies.

Pixels per square inch

A lot of photographers spend an awful lot of time fine tuning their masterpieces. They might look alright on an LCD display, but they might look pixelated and bad when they are printed. The main reason is that, digital displays use pixels and printed material inches. You can use an image manipulation program like Adobe Photoshop or GIMP (if you are on Linux) to optimize the picture’s resolution. The more the number of pixels per square inch, the higher the quality of the image will be.

Tips To Print High Quality Photos

If you have no idea about how many pixels you should assign to every square inch for printing purposes, you can assign 300 ppi which is generally recommended for photo printing. Where as, for viewing on the web a modest 72 ppi is all that is required. So if you are going to print on a 8″ × 12” paper, which is the best size for printing on a standard A4 size. The image will have a resolution of 2400 x 3600 pixels, which will be good enough to bring about as much detail as possible on the print from the original picture. Adjusting this setting in Photoshop or GIMP is pretty easy, there is no reason to be intimidated if you are a newbie.

Tips To Print High Quality Photos-5

Printer Ink Quality

It is always recommend to use the manufacturer’s ink cartridges in your printer. Genuine ink cartridges are good at color matching and also make your pictures last for decades. Cheaper 3rd party ink cartridges might be good for printing documents and letters, but if you really want to reproduce your images with accurate color matching and logevity, you need to use only quality cartridges. Using refilled cartridges might also ruin the outcome of the picture on the paper. Laser printers are not good at printing photos, but if you happened to have good color laser printer, make sure you use toners from the manufacturer and not some 3rd party powder that you can find for cheap price. I personally have this Xerox printer at home and get my toner here. I usually wait for the website to have some discounts and order what I need (I`m from the EU and this works best for me). You can find online stores near your city as well, compare prices and don`t forget to check out the delivery costs.

Tips To Print High Quality Photos -4

Paper quality & Printer settings

If you are concerned about quality and don’t have a photo printer, your ink jet printer can do just fine. In fact photo printers are technically speaking, ink jets. Never use regular paper to print your photos. Most ink jet printers can accept photo paper. You might have to change some settings in your printer or on the computer that is tethered to the machine. There are many printers that also come with a option toggle the printer between high-quality printing and normal printing. Set the right paper size, the paper type, the print quality and are ready to print high quality images right from your home on your low-cost ink jet printer and save yourself a trip to Walmart or Wal Greens.

Tips To Print High Quality Photos-3

Also, make sure you give it some time to dry. Photo papers usually have a glossy surface and it might take from a few seconds to up to a few minutes for the ink to dry (depending on the type of photo paper you use, you can take a look for example at the different types from Epson and read the description for each to understand what`s the main difference and what would suit you the best). It is also good to laminate the picture or secure them in a page saver for longevity.

Creating Picture Perfect Digital Photo Books

A Post By: Andre Smith

Digital photo books have a multitude of creative uses. They offer an attractive way to display photos beyond the realm of an electronic device. Digital photos books make great gifts for a variety of occasions. The large assortment of editing and formatting tools available make it easy to create high quality photo books that are ideal for a portfolio of professional work. Most online photo book companies provide templates to simplify the design process. An attractive photo book can be made in only a few minutes.

Creating Digital Photo Books -1
A Guide to Creating a Visually Appealing Photo Book

Striving for perfection can take the fun out of making a photo book. Realize that it doesn’t need to be flawless to be delightful. While it isn’t necessary to be exact, there are a number of steps that will enhance the aesthetic value of the photo book.

  • Use good quality photos. Most photo book sites will notify the user if the resolution is poor, but other problems such as red eye or brightness may also detract from the photos. Make sure to preview the photos before sending them to the printer.
  • Don’t use an overabundance of photos. Allow enough space to avoid a cluttered appearance. If there is a photo that is of significant importance or quality, don’t hesitate to use an entire page to draw attention to it.
  • Add other elements to the composition such as text. Scan maps, event tickets or business cards and incorporate them into the composition to add detail or personalize it. Simply load them into the layout like any other photo.
  • Use consistent fonts throughout the photo book.
  • Vary the layout to prevent the viewer from becoming bored.
  • Ensure that photos and other elements are properly aligned and not too near the edge of the page.
  • Text should be checked for spelling errors prior to publishing.

Selecting and Organizing Photos

Creating Digital Photo Books-2

Organizing the photos prior to uploading them to the photo book software will save time and make the process much simpler. Once the photos are downloaded from the camera, it’s wise to back up the unaltered files on a CD or DVD. Next, remove any poor quality photos from the files to be uploaded. This would include photos that are blurry. Photos that are too bright or too dark but otherwise pleasing can be edited. Select the best photos and place them in a separate folder. Keep in mind the theme of the photo book when choosing photos, and select those that will convey the experience you wish to describe.

Editing Photos

Creating Digital Photo Books-3

Any photos that are subpar may be edited prior to uploading. Some photo book companies provide editing tools, but they are often somewhat limited in capabilities. One of the most popular tools for editing photos is Adobe Photoshop. It is available for PC and Mac. Photoshop provides many sophisticated tools. It allows photos to be overlayed, parts to be clipped out, and text and drawings to be added. Adobe Photoshop is a professional graphics tool and is quite expensive, but a 30 day free trial is available. There are also a number of free editing tools available online.

Picasa includes tools for adjusting color, contrast and brightness as well as creating special effects. It also offers a nice collage feature.

PicMonkey operates from a browser. Photos are dragged and dropped into the editor. It includes basic editing tools as well as advanced features.

Pixlr is similar to Adobe Photoshop in that it allows photos to be edited in layers. There are different versions of the software including a simplified version, Pixlr Express, and Pixlr-o-mati that includes filters for color shifting and special effects.

Selecting an Online Photo Book Printing Company

Creating Digital Photo Books -4

Choosing a photo book print company will depend largely on preferences. However, there are a few things to look for when deciding where to have a photo book printed:

  • Customized layouts
  • Quality Printing and paper
  • Choice of hard and soft covers
  • Affordable pricing

I recommend Digital Print Australia. They also offer design tools for beginners as well as professional designers (see here) and can deliver the photo book in one to two days.

Arranging the Layout

Creating Digital Photo Books-5

Once a design company is selected, creating a photo book is as simple as selecting a theme and uploading the photos. The photos can be arranged in any manner desired. The templates offered by online companies are usually sufficient if the book is for a single event and the number of photos is not large. However, if the book has multiple events, more than 100 photos or a special theme is desired, it may be preferable to design the layout using separate software. Microsoft Publisher is readily available on most PCs and capable of creating splendid designs. When planning the layout, the following guidelines will help create a more aesthetically pleasing composition:

  • Customize background colors to harmonize with photos.
  • Use captions to inform the viewer of location or other details.
  • Add variations to the components of the layout such as rounded corners, a mixture of horizontal and vertical photos and size variations to make it more interesting.
  • Use a mixture of simple and complex layouts throughout the book.
  • Vary the number of photos the pages.

Features

Nikon D810 - front face

Nikon’s Greatest Image Quality Yet

The Nikon D810 is the pinnacle of D-SLR image quality, continuing to rival medium format cameras thanks to a variety of Nikon technologies engineered for professional image capture. At the core of the D810 is a brand-new, 36.3-megapixel FX-format (7360 x 4912 resolution) CMOS sensor that lets photographers wield the benefits of extremely high resolution, with rich tonality and a broad dynamic range. This super-high resolution gives professionals the power to capture with stellar sharpness, make massive prints or crop liberally with confidence. The OLPF has been removed to maximize the potential of every pixel, resulting in outstanding resolution and sharpness, yielding images that render subtle details with striking fidelity.

Image quality further benefits from the application of Nikon’s exclusive EXPEED 4 image processing engine, which also provides enhancements to overall performance while suppressing instances of false color and moiré. Photographing in the field or in the studio, users will see the difference with the ability to create stunning images with unprecedented clarity in gradation rendering, expanded dynamic range and high accuracy white balance. Additionally, EXPEED 4 enhances noise reduction performance, and helps to achieve a wider ISO range, from 64 to 12,800, to improve low-noise image capture in a variety of lighting conditions. The ISO range is also expandable from 32 (Lo-1) to 51,200 (Hi-2) letting the photographer shoot with maximum fidelity under studio lighting or confidently capture a faintly-lit wedding reception or other subjects in even the most challenging light.

Nikon D810 with Nikkor 85 mm 1.4.high

Nikon has also implemented a myriad of new features aimed at improving overall image quality for all types of photographers. Nikon’s Advanced Scene Recognition System with the 91,000-pixel 3D Color Matrix Meter III provides unbelievably balanced exposures in difficult scenes. The system analyzes each scene to recognize factors such as color, brightness and human faces with startling precision to determine what type of subject a user is shooting. The system then compares all the data using an image database to adjust exposure, AF, auto white balance, i-TTL flash control and enhances subject tracking.

Further enhancing the D810’s image quality, a “Clarity” setting has been added to the available Picture Control adjustment parameters, which adjusts mid tones to enhance details within an image. To help preserve the most amount of detail in shadows and highlights, the new “Flat” Picture Control Profile is now available. This Picture Control Profile allows both photographers and filmmakers to get the widest tonal range out of their cameras for maximum flexibility in post processing. For further customization of Picture Controls, users are now able to make adjustments in .25 step increments for the maximum level of custom color, saturation and brightness levels. Additionally, the D810 employs a new highlight-weighted metering option, which detects the brightness in a scene and determines optimum exposure, preventing blown-out highlights, which is ideal for stage and performance capture.

Video Features Fit for Production

The D810 has powerful video features that make it a valuable tool for any production environment. Whether a user is looking for manual control for pro video application or portability and lens selection for episodic broadcast, the D810 delivers a truly cinematic experience with a wide range of professional-oriented features:

Broadcast quality video: Full HD 1920 x 1080 video capture at a variety of frame rates, including 60/30/24p.

Versatile crop modes: FX and DX crop modes give users a telephoto boost when needed, a feature that has been very popular with camera operators because of its added flexibility on set.

Flat Picture Control profile: This neutral color profile is ideal for video and gives the user maximum flexibility in post-production.

HDMI output: The D810 can relay uncompressed digital video to an external recorder via HDMI, while simultaneously displaying the video on the rear LCD display and external LCD monitor. Operators can now also record both to the internal card (compressed) and to the external recorder (uncompressed) simultaneously.

Smooth in-camera time-lapse and interval timer: Like the Nikon D4S, the D810 uses an auto-exposure setting to help create super-smooth exposure and tonal transitions for professional results with time-lapse and interval-time shooting.

Audio control: The D810 features a built-in stereo microphone, and an external microphone can also be attached, such as the Nikon ME-1. Additionally, wide and voice frequency ranges are also now available for audio capture.

Expanded ISO for video: The ISO range is expanded for video, now encompassing a clean ISO 64 to a versatile 12,800. The Auto-ISO function is also available while recording to adapt the exposure as the light changes, which can eliminate the need to adjust the aperture (in manual mode, ISO 200- 51,200).

Zebra stripes: A zebra pattern can be displayed during live view, making it easy to spot overexposed areas.

Highlight weighted metering: This new setting helps to prevent blown-out highlights in video. This is especially useful when capturing spot-lit stage performances or shoots with harsh directional lighting.

Full manual control: With the innovative Power Aperture setting, it is simple to adjust the exposure and depth of field on the fly while recording to an external recorder or SD/CF cards. In manual mode, users can also control shutter speed and ISO while recording. Additionally, white balance and   exposure compensation can be adjusted prior to recording.

Full time AF: The Live View AF has been improved, and now provides faster full-time AF (AF-F mode).

NIKKOR lenses: Cinematographers and filmmakers are supported with more than 80 NIKKOR lenses, many of which are a popular choice for cinema applications because of their brilliant optical quality and characteristics.

Nikon D810

Accuracy and Speed

With the ability to brandish the results of such staggering resolution, accuracy and precision become paramount as the need for razor-sharp focus is critical. The D810 renders every subtle detail and nuance in epic clarity, with the enhanced Multi-Cam 3500-FX AF sensor module that utilizes new AF algorithms for fascinating precision, even in challenging light. The focus system also has 15 cross-type AF sensors for enhanced accuracy, and works with the Advanced Scene Recognition System to provide accurate face detection even through the optical viewfinder. The camera also utilizes 11 cross-type sensors that are fully functional when using compatible NIKKOR lenses and teleconverters (aperture value up to f/8), which is especially useful for wildlife photography. In addition to normal, wide area, face tracking and subject tracking modes, the D810 also features the new Group AF mode for enhanced accuracy, even while tracking subjects.

Despite the D810’s immense imaging power, it will astound with its rapid response and speedy performance, thanks to the implementation of the EXPEED 4 image processing engine. The addition of EXPEED 4 allows for an overall 30% boost in performance, as well as a faster burst speed and enhancement to overall energy efficiency. Now the D810 is capable of shooting at 5 frames-per-second (fps) at full resolution and 5:4, 6 fps in DX or 1.2x modes,  (15.4-megapixel, 25.1-megapixel, respectively), and 7 fps in DX mode (15.4-megapixel), with battery pack. For full workflow versatility, the D810 also gives users the option to shoot in full resolution 14-bit RAW/NEF file format or the new RAW Size Small format. This 12-bit file format is half the resolution and approximately 1/4 the file size of full RAW files, for increased flexibility when speedy downloads are desired or memory space is at a premium.

 Nikon D810 - top

Refined Controls and Construction

From all day in the studio to an extended assignment in the field, the D810 has been engineered for superior comfort and operability. When looking through the wide and bright viewfinder with 100% coverage, users will see shooting data displayed on an organic EL display element for maximum visibility. The viewfinder now also features a prism coating for enhanced clarity. In addition, the grip has been refined for comfort and ergonomics, and the “i” button has been added for quick access to common mode-dependent settings.

Both photographers and videographers will clearly see the benefits of the new high-resolution (1229K-dot)  3.2-inch LCD screen, which makes it simple to check focus, review images or compose a scene. The color space of the LCD screen can now also be fully customized, a feature that is useful for matching monitor or print calibration settings. Using the high-resolution LCD screen, users can also activate the new Split Screen Display Zoom function. This new mode magnifies two separated points on the same horizontal line, making it easier to confirm the two points are both level and in focus; a true advantage for architecture, industrial and landscape photographers.

Inside the durable magnesium alloy structure of the D810 improvements have also been made, including the use of a redesigned mirror sequencer / balancer unit, which minimizes vibration during shooting to increase sharpness during multiple frame bursts. Additionally, the electronic front curtain can now act as an electronic front shutter when using live view or first composing through the optical viewfinder in mirror-up mode. This new feature is useful to attain exacting sharpness when shooting slow-shutter landscapes or astrophotography. The shutter unit has also been tested to 200,000 cycles for years of maximum reliability. For further durability, the body of the D810 has been thoroughly sealed and gasketed to resist the elements, reinforcing this camera’s role in extreme production environments.

Superior System Support

Such extreme resolution requires that no compromise be made on glass, and NIKKOR lenses are the perfect choice to complement the D810. With more than 80 FX and DX-format lenses available, NIKKOR lenses offer the ultimate in image quality with sharpness and faithful color representation that is second to none. To light a scene imaginatively, the D810 has a built-in flash and is compatible with Nikon’s acclaimed Creative Lighting System, including a built-in Commander mode for controlling wireless Speedlights. The MB-D12 battery grip is also available to give users both extra grip and extra power when it is needed most.

For wireless control, the D810 is compatible with a full range of Nikon’s remote systems, including the new wireless remote system with the WR-1 to trigger the camera remotely. This system uses radio frequency rather than infrared, eliminating the need for line of sight communication.

Nikon will also be making a Software Developers Kit (SDK) available in the near future for the D810. This SDK will give third party developers the resources needed to create applications and enhance the flexibility of the D810.

Robust New Software Suite: Nikon Capture NX-D

Capture NX-D is Nikon’s new software for processing and adjusting RAW images captured with Nikon digital cameras. Capture NX-D is a free software application that will replace the current Capture NX 2 program, and adds interface and performance enhancements. In addition to RAW images, the program can also be used to adjust JPEG and TIFF files. This new software will support many functions needed by professional photographers, including batch image processing, filtering and an enhanced user interface with a variety of displays and floating palettes that are ideal for multiple monitors. Additionally, photographers will also have the ability to adjust parameters including exposure and white balance in RAW files, and can adjust tone curves, brightness and contrast, as well as functions for correcting lateral color aberration and vignetting in JPEG and TIFF files. The software also features a new “sidecar” format, which retains and saves the adjusted image as a separate file.

Nikon will also make available at no charge the new Picture Control Utility 2 software. This new software allows users to create custom Picture Control profiles, which can be easily loaded into the camera.

  • Using a circular diaphragm, this lens achieves spectacular background blur effects.

Overview

For the past 22 years since Tamron released to the market an extremely practical high-power zoom lens (28-200mm Model 71D) in 1992, the company has endeavored to continually develop high-power zoom lenses. By actively using its long-cultivated technology, Tamron has successfully developed an epoch-making compact and stylish, high-power all-in-one zoom lens that will further accelerate the attractiveness of the Micro Four Thirds cameras in the market.

When the development of this model was originally announced in January 2013, the lens was slated to feature built-in VC (Vibration Compensation). However, a series of deliberations and discussions over the course of the development process resulted in the removal of VC functionality.

Product Highlights

  • State-of-the-art optical design technology delivers superior image quality.
The advanced optical construction of this lens includes four elements of LD (Low Dispersion) glass, three Molded-Glass Aspherical elements, one Hybrid Aspherical element, one XR (Extra Refractive Index) glass element, and one element of UXR (Ultra-Extra Refractive Index) glass, which has greater refractive index than XR. The full use of specialized glass elements in its design contributes to making this outstanding lens as compact and lightweight as possible, while minimizing aberrations, resulting in superior image quality. Particularly impressive is the thorough compensation of chromatic aberrations at the telephoto end, yielding images of enhanced clarity and crispness.
  • Focus on portability – The lens is now even smaller and lighter.
In addition to state-of-the-art optical design that facilitates downsizing of the lens body, the mechanical design leads to a smaller overall lens compared to the existing Tamron 28-300mm (Model A20). The incorporation of a highly sophisticated multi-stack-cam layout that takes up far less space as well as the PZD (Piezo Drive) AF, an autofocus drive system with a simpler, more compact structure, make it possible to reduce the overall dimensions of this lens. These technologies are the fruit of Tamron’s more than 20 years of research and development in the high-power zoom lens field.
  • Advanced anti-reflection coating.
The application of BBAR (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection) coatings for suppressing reflections on lens element surfaces minimizes unwanted flare and ghosting to deliver sharp, crisp, high-contrast images.
  • Upgraded cosmetic design – Elegant tungsten silver brand ring.
Tamron has upgraded the cosmetic design and finish of this lens to create a more sophisticated, high-end look in keeping with the demands of discerning full-frame DSLR users. Employing a sophisticated linear pattern rubber grip on the zoom and focus rings and an elegant tungsten silver brand ring, this newly designed model accentuates its visceral presence with understated elegance and class.
  • PZD (Piezo Drive) delivers faster, quieter autofocus action.
The PZD (Piezo Drive), a standing-wave ultrasonic motor system, delivers faster, quieter, more precise action when the autofocus is engaged. The full-time manual focus system is easy and intuitive, enabling quick and convenient manual focus at any time.
  • Sharper images with VC (Vibration Compensation)
Tamron’s acclaimed VC (Vibration Compensation) mechanism reduces image blur caused by camera shake to deliver significantly sharper images even when shooting handheld.
  • Circular diaphragm facilitates achieving spectacular blur effects
Using a circular diaphragm[4], this lens achieves spectacular background blur effects that enable creative use of depth of field
  • Moisture-resistant construction for worry-free outdoor shooting.
Moisture-resistant construction helps prevent moisture from penetrating the lens.

Overview

Innovative All-In-One zoom integrates state-of-the-art optical design, PZD (Piezo Drive) and Tamron’s exclusive VC (Vibration Compensation) system to achieve superb image quality in a remarkably compact, lightweight package.the 28-300mm F/3.5-6.3 Di VC PZD (Model A010), an advanced new All-In-One zoom lens for full-frame DSLR cameras. The lens will be available in the U.S. in both Canon and Nikon mount (Sony mount availability to be announced) on June 26, 2014 at $849.

Since the launch in 1992 of the 28-200mm (Model 71D) high-power zoom lens – which featured a revolutionary compact, lightweight design – Tamron has been continually expanding its portfolio of world class optics to benefit consumers. Having revolutionized the optical design of the previous 28-300mm (Model A20), Tamron developed a powerful new, high-power zoom lens for full-frame DSLR cameras that enhances image quality and incorporates the PZD (Piezo Drive)-a standing-wave ultrasonic motor system optimized for swift, quiet AF-and the acclaimed VC (Vibration Compensation) mechanism in an amazingly compact configuration.

Featuring a new, sophisticated external finish, this lens complements the performance and style of full-frame DSLRs, while delivering the practical advantages of an All-In-One zoom lens.
