In 2008, Sigma released a large diameter standard lens designed for digital SLRs, “SIGMA 50mm F1.4 EX DG HSM”. At that time, products for film cameras were prevalent, yet we spent enormous effort to set a new benchmark for the 50mm lens that optimizes the characteristics of digital cameras, such as compensating peripheral brightness, controlling the point images in the corners, and improving the image drawing, not only around the focusing point, but also other areas in the image.
In recent years, as the DSLR evolves, development of image sensors for higher pixel size has created the photographers’ desire for the lenses with superior performance. In 2012, Sigma has announced the “Art” line that achieves unsurpassed expressive performance to fulfill the higher requirement of photographers. The first lens from the “Art” line “SIGMA 35mm F1.4 DG HSM [A 012]” sought for uncompromising performance, and it resulted in great reviews as well as a lot of awards from all over the world. 2. Astonishing rendering performance
Utilizing know-how and the latest design technology accumulated through the past developments, it corrects the aberration thoroughly and achieves high resolution and astonishing rendering performance even near the edge of the image.
• Achieving both high resolution and beautiful bokeh
While pursuing a high level of resolution on the focused point, bokeh in front and behind the point of focus is carefully maintained to have soft rendering. Aberrations including sagittal coma flare and color distortion that affect the image quality are thoroughly corrected. From open aperture, high-definition rendering without blur is achieved. Moreover, by ensuring vignetting at the minimum and preventing color blur around the front and back of the focus point, it also achieves natural bokeh.
• Excellent correction of sagittal coma flare
It is ideal for a wide aperture standard lens to have a high rendering performance from open aperture throughout the entire image. For instance, the molded glass aspherical lens elements provide excellent correction to sagittal coma flare. It is perfect for astronomical photography and shooting of illumination because of the reduced blur on the point light sources near the edge of the image. It also creates an attractive bokeh in portraits and indoor shooting.
• Correction of axial chromatic aberration
For axial chromatic aberration that is hard to correct even during the image processing, SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass elements are incorporated, ensuring high image quality throughout the entire focusing range. The lens achieves sharp and high contrast image rendering.
• Minimized distortion
It is not possible to compensate for distortion just by changing the aperture values. Thus, the lens development stage was vital in ensuring minimized distortion. The “SIGMA 50mm F1.4 DG HSM” has positioned each glass element to optimize the power layout at respective positions, and succeeded in minimizing distortion.
• Rich peripheral brightness
It secures very rich brightness in the peripheral areas, which can be a common problem for a lens with a large diameter. By positioning wide elements in the front group, it has improved the efficiency at large apertures. Since it is capable of minimizing vignetting, very clear depiction across the image is ensured.
• Designed to minimize flare and ghosting
Flare and ghosting were thoroughly measured and monitored from the lens development stage to establish an optical design which is resistant to strong incidental light such as backlight. The Super Multi-Layer Coating reduces flare and ghosting and provides sharp and high contrast images even in backlit conditions.
• Minimum focusing distance of 40cm
The lens incorporates a floating system that adjusts the distance between lens groups while focusing, thereby reducing the amount of lens movement required. This achieves a minimum focusing distance of 40cm and maximum magnification ratio of 1:5.6. As there is less variation in aberration at different shooting distances, the lens delivers high rendering performance throughout the entire focusing range.
3. Hyper Sonic Motor ensures High AF Speed
The HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) ensures a silent, high-speed AF function. Optimizing AF algorithm, smoother AF is achieved. It also enables full-time manual focusing capability which allows sensible focus adjustment by simply rotating the focus ring.
4. New Customizing Option added to “SIGMA USB DOCK”
With the optional SIGMA USB DOCK and the dedicated special software “SIGMA Optimization Pro”, you can update your lens firmware, or adjust focus points by attaching this lens to a SIGMA USB DOCK connected to a computer.
Other Features
Incorporating Rounded Diaphragm
The 9 blade-rounded diaphragm creates an attractive blur to the out-of-focus areas of the image.
Design Concept
With the new product lines, supplied hoods incorporate rubber for the connected part. Lens caps and AF/MF switches are also newly designed in order to improve usability. For the parts inside, metals and a new material called TSC (Thermally Stable Composite), which works well with metals, are located to achieve products with high accuracy. The lens barrel includes the year of release, engraved for users to recognize when the lens was released.
Brass made bayonet mount
This lens incorporates a brass made bayonet mount which has both high accuracy and durability. A special treatment to reinforce its strength is applied to the surface giving it greater strength and making it highly resistant to long-term use.
Evaluation with Sigma’s own MTF measuring system “A1”
We used to measure lens performance with MTF measuring system using conventional sensors. However, we’ve now developed our own proprietary MTF (modulation transfer function) measuring system (A1) using 46-megapixel Foveon direct image sensors. Even previously undetectable high-frequency details are now within the scope of our quality control inspections. The SIGMA 50mm F1.4 DG FISM will all be checked using this “A1” before they are shipped.

Fujifilm Corporation (President: Shigehiro Nakajima) has announced the release of the FUJINON XF56mm F1.2 R lens. Available from February 2014, this latest addition to the company’s line up of professional-grade lenses for X-series interchangeable-lens cameras features a fast maximum aperture of f/1.2, a focal length of 85mm*1 and delivers beautiful bokeh, making it particularly suitable for high quality portraits.
The XF56mm F1.2 R is less than half the size of an equivalent lens on a full-frame camera*2 and offers fast, quiet autofocusing that ensures stress-free shooting for both the photographer and the model. It also delivers incredible resolving power for high quality results that are enhanced by the unique skin tone reproduction technology found in Fujifilm’s X-mount cameras. Using the XF56mm and selecting one of two PRO Negative modes from the Film Simulation menu on the camera body will ensure users can capture beautiful portraits with rich tonal gradations reminiscent of images from film cameras.
Like all other lenses in the XF line up, the XF56mm F1.2 R is designed with an impressive attention to detail. It has a design that sits comfortably in the hand and exterior features including a metal aperture ring for a premium quality feel.
Advanced optical design for professional portraits
The lens’ new optical design featuring 11 elements in 8 groups delivers impressive results. The design includes two ED (extra low-dispersion) elements and one double-sided aspherical element, plus four elements with a convex surface facing the subject, which combine to reduce spherical and chromatic aberrations. They also ensure the best possible image resolution, even when the lens is at its widest aperture of f/1.2.
Image quality is further enhanced by Fujifilm’s proprietary HT-EBC coating that’s used on all lens surfaces to reduce ghosting and flare, while the seven-blade rounded diaphragm produces the creamy smooth bokeh effect that’s become synonymous with XF series lenses.
Attach the XF56mm F1.2 lens to a body that supports the Lens Modulation Optimiser*3 and picture quality leaps even higher thanks to the automatic correction of diffraction when shooting at smaller apertures.
Fast autofocus, silent operation
The XF56mm F1.2 R combines an inner focus mechanism*4 and a DC coreless motor for rapid autofocusing speeds, which are boosted further when used with a X-series camera body that supports phase detection AF. The structure and positioning of the focusing unit reduces sound and vibration for silent operation and with no lens barrel movement during focusing, the structure effectively prevents dust particles from getting into the lens and degrading picture quality.
Premium build quality
In keeping with the XF lens legacy, the 56mm F1.2 R features a durable, metal construction – including the aperture and focusing rings – to ensure a high quality feel. The aperture ring is designed to ensure it’s easy to detect ‘clicks’ between f-stops, while the focusing ring is both comfortable in use and has the perfect amount of torque so it’s simple to focus precisely.

The new FinePix S9400W (with WiFi) and FinePix S9200 (without WiFi) both feature a 16MP CMOS sensor with a maximum ISO sensitivity of 12,800, and deliver rapid focusing speeds and beautiful high resolution images. Both cameras also give users a bright F2.9-6.5 lens that offers an amazing 50x optical zoom 24-1200mm*3 optical range that can be boosted to an incredible 100x magnification with Fujifilm’s Intelligent Digital Zoom technology and down to 1cm in Super Macro mode for extraordinary close up images.
The S9400W/S9200 both have a start-up time of just one second, autofocus in as little as 0.3 seconds and are ready to take another shot in just 0.5 seconds. Those wanting to capture a burst of full resolution images in quick succession can do so using the continuous shooting speed of 10 frames-per-second (maximum 10 frames).
Available exclusively on the S9400W, WiFi connectivity allows users to quickly share photos and movies with smartphones or tablets, without the need for an ID or password. Through Samsung’s innovative i-Function system, advanced camera settings such as shutter speed and aperture can be accessed with the touch of one button. For more experienced photographers, i-Function Plus lets users are able to reprogram existing buttons with their preferred and frequently used settings.
The powerful new SEF 580A TTL external flash with a Guide Number of 58 makes it simple to capture perfect shots, allowing light to travel further and wider. The high speed flash sync mode allows for flash with shutter speeds faster than 1/200 of a second, ideal for brightly lit scenes with selective depth of field. Fujifilm has introduced the XF 10-24mm F4 R OIS Lens, an ultra-wide angle zoom for X system mirrorless cameras, equivalent to 15-36mm on full frame, and incorporates optical image stabilisation to reduce camera shake at slow shutter speeds when shooting hand-held. The lens features an aperture control ring on the barrel, and is compatible with the company’s Lens Modulation Optimizer for more detailed out-of-camera JPEG files when shooting at small apertures. Addition of Fujinon XF10-24mmF4 R OIS extended X mount series focal length options ranging from 15mm to 350mm (in 35mm equivalent). It’ll be available from March 2014 @ $999.95 / £849.99.

Tamron Announces SP 150-600mm F/5-6.3 Di VC USD Lens Release Date & Pricing
Tamron has announced the release date & pricing of it’s new ultra-telephoto zoom lens SP 150-600mm F/5-6.3 Di VC USD for full-frame and APS-C format DSLR cameras. The Canon mount model will be available first in Japan on December 19, 2013 and later in elsewhere. The launch dates of the Nikon and Sony compatible mount models will be announced at a later date. The SP 150-600mm Di VC USD lens will be available in the USA on January 17, 2014. The US price of the lens will be $1,069. Which is not too much higher than the Tamron’s curent AF 200-500mm f/5.0-6.3 Di LD SP lens. It is selling @ $950.
