Lens Distorsions: Barrel, Pincushion & Mustache Distortion

Common Lens Distortions

Optical distortions are very common to all camera lenses due to the shape and give lenses their own characteristics. Mostly, they are rather lens characteristic than fault. Barrel and pincushion distortions are the most frequently used words in Lens distortions. Third one, the worst kind, is the mustache distortion. As long as they are in acceptable level, you don’t need to worry about it. Some people actually like them and use them creatively.

No Distortion

No Distortion

Barrel distortion

Here the straight lines curve inwards as it moves away from the optical axis and shape of the curves which looks like a barrel. Hence called barrel distortion. This happens when the image magnification decreases as the distance from the optical axis increases. barrel distortion happens because the field of view of the lens is much wider than the size of the image sensor and hence it needs to be “squeezed” to fit. Commonly seen on wide angle lenses. Fisheye lens is a perfect example of barrel distortion, which makes a photo look bulged outwards at the centre of the image.

Barrel distortion

Barrel distortion

Pincushion distortion

In barrel distortion an image has a shape of a barrel; in case of a pincushion distortion an image takes the shape of a cushion, i.e. as the straight lines move away from the optical axis they curve outwards. This phenomenon is seen in telephoto lenses.

Pincushion distortion

Pincushion distortion

Mustache Distortion

Mustache Distortion contains both barrel and pincushion. At the centre of an image a barrel distortion appears and gradually turns in a pincushion shape at the edge of the same image. Probably the worst kind of lens distortion.

Mustache distortion

Mustache distortion

Both the barrel and pincushion distortions are quadratic. This means that their distortions are proportional to the square of their distance from the centre. But in mustache distortion in the centre it is quadratic due to the barrel being the dominant distortion, but at the edges it becomes quartic (to the power of 4) as both barrel and pincushion distortions are visible.

MELVILLE, NY (September 19, 2013) – Today, Nikon Inc. announced the world’s first waterproof, shockproof interchangeable lens camera1, the Nikon 1 AW1. Also designed to be freezeproof, the durable and versatile AW1thrives in harsh environments while delivering the high-performance features and incredible image quality that thrill-seeking families need to capture every moment and memory. By land or by sea, from the tropics to snowy peaks, this newest addition to the Nikon 1 Advanced Camera with Interchangeable Lens System (ACIL) is equipped with outdoor friendly features to capture amazing photos and stunning Full HD video.

To complement the AW1, Nikon also introduced two new waterproof, shockproof and freezeproof lenses, the 1 NIKKOR AW 11-27.5mm f/3.5-5.6 and 1 NIKKOR AW 10mm f/2.8. Striking the ideal balance between portability and performance, the robust 11-27.5mm lens offers a versatile lens option with a 2.5x zoom range. Additionally, the portable wide-angle 10mm lens offers a fast f/2.8 aperture to help deliver a shallow depth of field and excellent low-light performance.

“As the world’s first waterproof and shockproof Advanced Camera with Interchangeable Lens System, the Nikon 1 AW1 offers an exciting new option for the family who seeks both exhilaration and a durable yet versatile camera to complement their active lifestyle,” said Masahiro Horie, Director of Marketing and Planning, Nikon Inc. “The Nikon 1 AW1 and the new 1 NIKKOR lenses are always ready to capture the action with high speed performance and incredible image quality that users have come to expect from the Nikon 1 System.”

The Nikon 1 AW1: The World’s First Waterproof and Shockproof Interchangeable Lens Camera

Whether the destination is to the beach, the slopes or a mountain pass, the Nikon 1 AW1 is a must-pack accessory for any adventure. Waterproof (down to 49 feet), shockproof (up to 6.6 feet) and freezeproof (down to 14° F), the AW1 can handle the toughest conditions while capturing fast action. Though built to be durable and robust, the camera retains a compact and lightweight body, making it easy to carry on any expedition, above or below sea level.

Additionally, the versatile Nikon 1 AW1 offers the unique feature set that adventurers of all levels can take full advantage of, whether tackling a black diamond slope or an unfamiliar trail. With built-in GPS technology, AW1 users can track their travels while identifying the exact longitude and latitude where an image or video was captured. The AW1 is also equipped with an altimeter, a depth gauge, an electronic compass and a virtual horizon indicator. What’s more, the cameras pop-up flash is waterproof as well, allowing the user to add light to a scene automatically or on command.

Capturing the Perfect Shot: The Performance and Speed of the Nikon 1 AW1

Featuring both a14.2-megapixel CX-format CMOS sensor and Nikon’s EXPEED 3A image processing engine, the AW1 produces sharp, high-quality images and HD video with great detail and color, even in challenging lighting situations. The Nikon 1 AW1 also sports a wide ISO range (160 to 6400), allowing users to capture sharp photos in a variety of lighting, even while handheld.

Swift performance and rapid response are hallmarks of the Nikon 1 System, and in similar fashion the   the AW1 includes Nikon’s superfast and extremely responsive Advanced Hybrid Autofocus (AF) system that affords users the ability to capture incredibly fast moving action. To capture even the fastest moving subjects with clarity, the 73-point AF array can lock on to the action in approximately 80 milliseconds2. To help ensure that no moment is missed, the AW1 offers the world’s fastest continuous shooting frame rate (approx. 15 frames-per-second [fps] with AF)3 and continuous shooting at 60 fps when the focus is locked.

Ready for the Next Adventure: The Feature Set of the Nikon 1 AW1

The compact Nikon 1 AW1 strikes the perfect balance between creative and user-friendly features and controls. Similar to the Nikon COOLPIX AW110, the AW1 also includes Action Control, which allows users to control certain functions of the camera simply by swinging it in the air. This feature makes it easier to adjust the camera underwater or when wearing gloves.

When using the Nikon 1 AW1, the Creative Mode menu provides an easy way to utilize full manual exposure controls (P,S,A,M) as well as Selective Color, Miniature, Soft, Night Landscape, Backlighting and Night Portrait modes. Additionally, Easy Panorama provides a simple way to capture vast landscapes from a wide perspective of awe-inspiring landscapes.

The Nikon 1 AW1 incorporates Full HD 1080p video capabilities as well as Advanced Movie Mode. In Advanced Movie Mode, users can shoot Full HD video and high-resolution stills simultaneously. Additionally, Slow Motion Movies can capture all the action at either 400 fps or 1200 fps. The AW1 also features Enhanced Motion Snapshot Mode, which provides shooters with the option of capturing a quick passing moment with a short, slow-motion movie sequence in addition to a single defining still image.

When Best Moment Capture Mode is selected, camera users have access to Smart Photo Selector or Slow View modes. With Smart Photo Selector, the AW1 can capture up to 20 shots with a simple press of the shutter button, and the camera will select the best shot. Slow View is ideal for extreme action sports; once focus is achieved and the shutter button is pressed halfway down, users capture live action (approx. 1.33 seconds) while the subject is displayed in slow motion on the screen. A slowed-down view is then continuously looped over until the shutter is fully pressed, resulting in an amazing moment that would have been otherwise been missed.

Furthermore, the Nikon 1 AW1 features an intuitive Auto Mode to help users frame the perfect shot with ease. The AW1 also comes equipped with Live Image Control, giving the user access to real time adjustments of Active D-Lighting, Background Softening, Motion Control and Brightness Control, which are displayed on the AW1’s LCD screen prior to capture.

When it’s time for some aquatic action, the Nikon 1 AW1 offers several underwater controls. When in Underwater mode, users can choose from either three options (standard, scuba, close-up), which will automatically adjust the camera’s settings to deliver optimal results based on the type of activity that a user is participating in. Additionally, the Underwater White Balance setting makes adjusting white balance simple, while the Underwater Distortion Control corrects the effects of distortion caused by water.

Share the Adventure: Wirelessly Send Images from the Nikon 1 AW1

For those who want to share their images from their latest expeditions instantly, users will be able to take advantage of the AW1’s Wi-Fi capabilities. Similar to previous Nikon 1 System cameras like the Nikon 1 J3, the Nikon 1 AW1 is fully compatible with Nikon’s optional WU-1b Wireless Mobile Adapter4, allowing high-quality images to seamlessly be transferred to compatible smart devices wirelessly.  If using the free Wireless Mobile Adapter Utility application for Android™5 platform smart devices as well as iPhone® and iPad®6 mobile digital devices, AW1 users will have the ability to remotely take photos with the camera from a smartphone or tablet as well.

The 1 NIKKOR AW 11-27.5mm f/3.5-5.6 and AW 10mm f/2.8: New Lenses for the Nikon 1 AW1

Alongside the new Nikon 1 AW1, the waterproof, shockproof and freezeproof 1 NIKKOR AW 11-27.5mm f/3.5-5.6 and 1 NIKKOR AW 10mm f/2.8 provide two versatile lens options for the individual looking for a compact camera system that can keep up with their active lifestyle. The compact 11-27.5mm is a lightweight yet durable lens that packs a 2.5x zoom (30-74mm equivalent) and is ideal for capturing landscapes and portraiture during a family’s latest expedition. Portable and ultra-compact, the 10mm provides AW1 shooters with a wide angle of view, useful when capturing everything from sweeping landscapes to close-up action that fills the frame. Not to be outdone, the 10mm has a fast aperture of f/2.8, to capture special moments with incredible clarity and a soft natural background, even in challenging light such as dusk or when underwater.

For further versatility when out of the water, the Nikon 1 AW1 is also fully compatible with the expanding lineup of incredibly sharp 1 NIKKOR lenses, Nikon 1 accessories, as well as a wide range F-Mount NIKKOR lenses when connected to the FT-1 Mount Adapter.

Demonstrating Nikon’s commitment to the newly introduced waterproof, shockproof and freezeproof products, Nikon also introduced new accessory skins for the Nikon 1 AW1 and the 1 NIKKOR AW 11-27.5mm f/3.5-5.6 lens. To provide more grip, comfort and control when shooting, the new accessory skins provide extra protection while also adding visibility and personal flair to their Nikon 1 Camera System setup.

For those adventurers looking for the flexibility to swap lenses in environments with extreme temperature and humidity changes, Nikon has developed a new filter attachment, the Filter AW 40.5 NC, to effectively combat the common occurrence of condensation. Nikon has also announced the development of the SB-N10 Underwater Speedlight. The SB-N10 will offer extra illumination when capturing still images underwater or in extreme low-light conditions.

Press Release:

Micro Four Thirds® Camera Delivers Maximum Four Thirds® Lens Performance, DSLR Image Quality, Rugged Durability and Super-Large EVF; New Lenses Establish M.ZUIKO® PRO Category

CENTER VALLEY, Pa., September 10, 2013 – In response to the demand for a compact system camera as powerful as a professional DSLR, Olympus introduces the OM-D E-M1®, its new premium flagship camera and worthy Micro Four Thirds successor to the Olympus E-5 DSLR. The E-M1 has a revolutionary design for advanced photographers looking for a high-performance tool in a compact system camera package. The powerful E-M1 is packed with incredible speed and image quality that rivals full-frame DSLRs, in a portable yet lightweight body designed to go anywhere.

The Olympus OM-D E-M1 now works seamlessly with all ZUIKO Digital lenses, in addition to working with M.ZUIKO Digital lenses, so photographers can enjoy optimum performance of the entire Olympus lens lineup. This is possible due to advanced DUAL FAST AF system that combines both Contrast AF and On-Chip Phase Detection AF. DSLR users familiar with an optical viewfinder will marvel at its electronic viewfinder (EVF) that is as large as a full-frame DSLR viewfinder and has added creative control. Its ergonomic body provides easy access to all manual controls and is ready for action in the most difficult shooting conditions.

Olympus also announces today the development of two new high-performance lenses, establishing the M.ZUIKO PRO lens category. The ZUIKO Digital ED 12–40mm f2.8 PRO lens (24–80mm, 35mm equivalent) and the ZUIKO Digital ED 40–150mm f2.8 PRO (80–300mm, 35mm equivalent) will expand the imaging options for professionals and serious photo enthusiasts alike.

Olympus OM-D E-M1 - Top

DSLR Image Quality

With the OM-D E-M1, experience the highest image quality of any Olympus camera through the combination of a new 16.3 megapixel Live MOS sensor, a new TruePic VII image processor, and its best-in-class M.ZUIKO lenses. The TruePic VII image processor reduces noise and color fading at high ISOs for improved image reproduction. New Fine Detail Processing II technology configures the appropriate sharpness processing for each individual lens for natural, high-quality resolution, as well as reducing compression artifacts when recording movies.

Fast and Accurate AF for Complete Four Thirds and Micro Four Thirds Lens Compatibility

The newly developed DUAL FAST AF selects the ideal method, depending on lens type and settings: either 37-point On-Chip Phase Detection AF or 81-point Contrast Detection AF to maximize the performance of both ZUIKO and M.ZUIKO lenses. Both systems work together to significantly improve continuous autofocus tracking performance when a Micro Four Thirds lens is attached and C-AF is selected. Users can select Group Target AF for a variety of situations, Small Target AF for pinpoint shooting, or Super Spot AF for capturing even smaller subjects and specifying a small area focus location during macro shooting.

The TruePic VII engine supports 10 frames-per-second shooting with a 41-picture RAW buffer in single autofocus (S-AF) mode and 6.5 frames-per-second shooting with a 50-picture RAW buffer in continuous autofocus (C-AF) mode.

New Super-Large Interactive Electronic Viewfinder

The E-M1’s advanced, built-in Interactive Electronic Viewfinder features a 1.48x (35mm equivalent of .74x) magnification factor that rivals full-frame DSLR cameras. The extremely high-resolution 2.36 million-dot LCD panel provides a large, clear image that is on a par with optical viewfinders. Tracking moving subjects is completely natural, with a display time lag of only 0.029 seconds. Users can experiment with aspect ratio, magnification, color, and highlight and shadow, and the effects of camera settings on subjects are viewable prior to capturing the finished image. Adaptive Brightness Control raises the brightness when shooting in bright outdoor conditions and lowers the brightness in dark indoor conditions, reducing visual errors from light and dark adaptation of the eye.

Color Creator is a new easy-to-use tool that fine-tunes hue and color saturation using the intuitive GUI and Live View screen, so users can create original images imbued with their own choice of colors. Creative Color was created with a designer’s sensitivity in mind, and hue can be adjusted in 30 steps, and color saturation adjusted in eight steps, including the baseline.

The Most Effective 5-Axis Image Stabilization System

The Olympus E-M1’s built-in 5-Axis Image Stabilization with Multi-Motion IS mechanism reduces the effects of camera motion and image blur from five directions. Whether shooting stills or HD video, even the motion blur caused by walking or running is stabilized. New algorithms make image stabilization more effective at low shutter speeds. When it is employed while panning during still image shooting or movie recording, IS-AUTO mode automatically detects the camera’s movements and provides optimal correction regardless of direction or camera orientation – even when panning in a diagonal direction. Users can check the image stabilization effects on the Live View screen as well as the viewfinder to accurately frame and focus, even during telephoto or macro shooting. Multi-Motion IS, used in combination with the 5-Axis Image Stabilization mechanism, produces excellent correction during movie recording.

Rugged Freeze, Splash, Dustproof Durability

The Olympus OM-D E-M1 expands the dustproof and splashproof capabilities of the E-M5 even further with freezeproof capabilities — guaranteed operation down to 14 ºF — for the best environmental resistance of any Olympus interchangeable lens camera. Its durable magnesium alloy body, and weather-resistant seals and gaskets block moisture and dust for use in any environment, without sacrificing image quality. The camera’s Supersonic Wave Filter (SSWF) dust reduction system vibrates at a super-high speed of more than 30,000 times per second to powerfully remove dust particles so users can shoot in dusty environments.

Olympus OM-D E-M1 - LCD

Ultimate Camera Control
Advanced photographers will appreciate the intuitive 2×2 Dial Control system to easily adjust four often-used functions with the camera’s lever or two dials: aperture/shutter speed, exposure compensation, ISO speed and white balance. A built-in grip similar to that of the E-M5 makes shooting with Four Thirds lenses more comfortable, and all frequently accessed buttons are logically laid out. Controls are now more functional: the settings reset function is activated by pressing and holding the OK button and there is a toggle option for the My Settings shortcut and a locking mode dial to prevent unintentional movement of the mode dial during shooting or when removing the camera from a case or bag. The dedicated “mic-in” jack supports an external microphone when recording HD movies and a built-in X-Sync socket easily connects to studio strobes.

Olympus OM-D E-M1 - Back

Built-In Wi-Fi
The Olympus OM-D E-M1 includes built-in Wi-Fi, and the set-up is simple. By quickly scanning the QR code displayed on the camera’s LCD with a smart device, it syncs with the Wi-Fi network created by the camera. The free Olympus Image Share 2.0 smartphone app synchronizes a user’s smartphone and E-M1 so the camera’s “Live View” is effectively displayed on the phone, and the camera can be controlled by touching the smartphone display as if it were the camera. This is ideal for taking self-portraits, capturing images of wildlife from a distance and sharing images easily online. The E-M1’s remote shooting function has been improved for use in all main shooting modes (P, A, S, M and iAUTO). Users can now wirelessly adjust various settings, such as the shutter speed, aperture value, ISO and exposure compensation, as well as operate the Live Bulb shooting mode from their Wi-Fi devices. They can also use their smartphone to embed GPS information into their images.

More Creative Features
New Diorama II adds to the popular range of Olympus in-camera Art Filters and offers left and right blur effect in addition to the top and bottom blur effect of Diorama I. The Olympus E-M1 is equipped with two variations of HDR Shooting – HDR1 and HDR2. With a single press of the shutter button, four images with differing exposures are captured and automatically merged in the camera into a single HDR high-contrast image or super-high-contrast image. Photo Story mode enables users to capture a scene from multiple viewpoints and then combine the images into a single image to create unique collages inside the camera. Time Lapse Movie converts the series of pictures taken using interval shooting into a movie inside the camera. The Time Lapse Movie length has been increased to a maximum of 100 seconds. The number of possible shots that can be captured with Interval Shooting has been increased to 999. The E-M1 is also equipped with Focus Peaking, which dramatically improves the usability of older manual focus lenses.

New High-Performance Lenses and Accessories for Every Shooting Challenge
The M.ZUIKO Digital ED 12-40mm f2.8 PRO lens (24–80mm, 35mm equivalent) is the first model in the new M.ZUIKO PRO category and is scheduled for release at the same time as the Olympus OM-D E-M1. It features dustproof and waterproof performance, toughness and excellent image quality. Its mount employs the same type of sealing as the camera body and is Movie & Still Compatible (MSC) with high-speed, near-silent autofocus during still shooting and high-definition (HD) video capture. It maintains the brightness of a constant f2.8 aperture for high-grade image creation, one of the requirements of professional photographers for a high-performance lens.

The M.ZUIKO Digital ED 40-150mm F2.8 PRO (80–300mm, 35mm equivalent) also joins the new M.ZUIKO PRO lens category. This lens is currently under development, with a planned release in the latter half of 2014. It will be a telephoto zoom lens with a bright constant f2.8 aperture and will feature a dustproof and splashproof construction rugged enough for professional use.

Several new accessories are designed to complement the Olympus OM-D E-M1 and broaden the creative horizons of all advanced photographers. The HLD-7 Power Battery Holder is a dustproof and splashproof power battery holder that can enable the capture of approximately 680 shots (based on CIPA tests) between charges. It features a shutter button for shooting with the camera held vertically and two control dials and two function buttons for the same easy controls as when shooting from a horizontal position. The GS-5 Grip Strap for the HLD-7 keeps buttons and dials accessible even when the battery holder is attached. The PT-EP11 Underwater Case is made exclusively for the Olympus E-M1 and allows shooting down to 45 meters.

The new CBG-10 Camera Bag is compact, yet designed with Four Thirds lens use in mind, and the highly water-resistant CS-42SF Soft Camera Case, which is part of the Camera Bag CBG-10 system, is made exclusively for use with the E-M1. The CSS-P118 Shoulder Strap is made of washable material with a slender width that matches the versatility of the Micro Four Thirds System.

Leica C Dark Red

The Leica C is the first Leica camera to feature an integrated Wi-Fi and NFC (Near Field Connection) module. This allows the wireless transfer of images and videos to smartphones and tablets  via a WiFi connection. To use this feature, all users have to do is download the Leica C Image Shuttle app and install it on their iOS or Android device. The photographer can then connect to a WiFi network and the image transfer can begin. Another highlight of this technology is that WiFi in combination with the app enables remote control of the Leica C from a smartphone or tablet—particularly practical for remote-release photography and shooting with the self-timer. The practical application of Wi-Fi and NFC technology goes beyond the instant transferring of files from the camera to a smartphone or tablet; users are granted the ability to watch images and videos simultaneously on a smartphone, share images instantaneously with a client, review important moments as they happen, upload images and video instantly onto social media, and even monitor different rooms in their homes i.e. where children might be sleeping, playing or (not) doing their homework.

Leica C - Back

The Leica C guarantees images that are particularly rich in detail and is extremely versatile and ideal for every kind of photography—from portraits to wide-coverage shots and capturing the beauty of landscapes. Featuring a high-performance zoom lens, with a range equivalent to 28 to 200 mm in 35 mm format, and an extraordinarily large sensor for its class with a resolution of 12.1 megapixels, the Leica C delivers outstanding image quality, even in unfavorable lighting conditions. Even more creative freedom is provided by a freely programmable ring on its lens. The combination of high-precision optics and a large sensor guarantees outstanding imaging performance and pin-sharp pictures with brilliant, natural colors, clarity and contrast. Thanks to its remarkably fast autofocus and a continuous-shooting mode with up to ten frames per second, the Leica C captures even the tiniest of details.  It also offers a wide range of camera functions, various settings, in-camera processing options and an intuitively simple handling concept for flexible and spontaneous photography. This, plus its particularly stylish and elegant compact design, makes the Leica C an ideal companion for all occasions where photos are paramount.

The camera’s full-HD video function allows for even more creative opportunities. The 3″ camera monitor offers photographers complete control during exposure and recording. The camera’s integrated viewfinder is an additional aid to composition and assessment of scenes in brightly lit situations. Videos and still pictures alike can be creatively processed either in the camera or with the Adobe® Photoshop® Lightroom® professional imaging software supplied with the camera.

The Leica C and most accessories will be available from  Leica dealers starting in October 2013. The Leica C-Pouch and C-Snap accessories will be available from December.

Cokin Renames Its Square Filter Range – ‘Creative Filter System’

Creative Filter System

Cokin has rebranded its square filters range and packaging. The existing Cokin A, P, Z-Pro and X-Pro have been rebranded into a single ‘Creative Filter System’, renamed with ‘S’, ‘M’, ‘L’ and ‘XL’. The old plastic storage boxes also replaced by a slimmer ‘SlidePack’ pack, and uses a microfibre-lined sleeve to help keep your filters clean. Cokin Creative Filter System has three main components: an Adapter ring (Screw the adapter ring onto your lens), a filter holder (Slide the filter holder on the adapter ring until it snaps in place) , and a Filter (Slide the filter into one of the filter holder slots). Cokin Filters available at Amazon, Adorama, & B&H

Cokin rethinks its range of creative filters

Cokin Square Creative Filter System

New brand image. New packagings

Cokin announces a new step in its renaissance, by simplifying its range of creative products. For years, we used “creative filters” as a generic name. Today, CREATIVE FILTER SYSTEM (CFS) becomes the official name of our range of creative products.

All the existing Cokin creative products (A Series, P Series, Z-Pro Series and X-Pro Series) are unified under this new range name. Until now, dealers had to explain the difference between each systems. However, what makes a customer decide between the different systems is the size of their lenses rather than the features of each. That’s why, instead of four different products (A, P, Z-PRO, X-PRO), it will be easier to explain CREATIVE FILTER SYSTEM as one product, available in four sizes (S, M, L, XL). Moreover, the use of “textile” denomination of sizes (S, M, L, XL) helps having a clear overview of the range. As of today, Cokin CREATIVE FILTER SYSTEM range will look like this:

Cokin Square Creative Filter System - Size Chart

Cokin also presents a more comprehensive brand identity, with pictograms and color code, to help customers understanding what system is recommended to them. Pictograms give information on the new size denomination, the previous name of the series, the minimum and maximum diameters of available adaptor rings for this size.

Cokin Creative Filter System

As a reminder, the CREATIVE FILTER SYSTEM logo carries four dots () echoing colors of each
size, for customers to understand these items are part of the same range.

This overhaul wouldn’t be complete without a total rethinking of our packaging, to replace the long-lasting 35 years plastic box which protected Cokin creative filters since 1978.

After extensive research and development, Cokin is proud to announce SlidePack™, a revolutionary and environment-friendly new packaging for its best-selling M Size (ex-P Series) filters. SlidePack™ is approximately 55% smaller and 60% lighter than the previous packaging, and is only made of recyclable material to reduce Cokin footprint and help preserving the world that gives us so beautiful pictures.

Cokin Square Creative Filter System - Specification Chart

We’ve also learnt a lot about users expectations. This new packaging is more user-friendly. The filter slides in an out of the packaging with only one hand. Made of thick carton and overpacked in a ready to pegboard polyethylene strong sleeve, SlidePack™ is very protective. The inner part of SlidePack™ is coated with a microfiber cloth. Not only does it prevent the filter from being scratched, but it cleans it each time the filter slides in and out. Moreover, the design of SlidePack™ prevents the filter to drop unexpectedly. It has never been so easy to use a Cokin filter.

Press release

New ARRI/ZEISS Master Anamorphic and ZEISS Cine Zoom lens to be unveiled at IBC show in Amsterdam

OBERKOCHEN/Germany, 06.09.2013. – The wide-angle lens Compact Zoom CZ.2 15-30/T2.9 is the newest member of the ZEISS zoom family. From September 13-17, ZEISS will show a mock-up of this lens for the first time at its booth F58 in hall 11 during the IBC in Amsterdam, Europe’s most important trade fair for film, television and radio production and delivery. ZEISS and its partner ARRI will also present the world debut of the ARRI/ZEISS Master Anamorphic MA 100/T1.9. This will expand the number of focal lengths for the ARRI/ZEISS Master Anamorphic lenses available on the market to four.

“With the Compact Zoom CZ.2 15-30/T2.9 we are closing a gap in the wide-angle range in our family of cine zooms,” says Michael Schiehlen, Director of Sales of ZEISS Camera Lenses. “This offers sophisticated clients the greatest possible flexibility so that there are no limits to their creativity — even in cramped shooting situations.” The new zoom complements the existing Compact Zoom CZ.2 70-200/T2.9 and CZ.2 28-80/T2.9 lenses with a wide-angle zoom in the focal-length range of 15-30 mm.

The new cine zoom lens has all the features of the ZEISS Compact Zoom family. This includes a compact, lightweight design (2.5 kg/5.7 lbs on a length of 252 mm/9.92”), the interchangeable mount system (PL, EF, F, MFT and E mount) and full-frame coverage (36×24 mm), which creates a sweet-spot effect when used on Super-35 camera sensors. Additional features are the color matching and an ergonomic surface for handheld operation as well as for use with a follow-focus system. In addition, the lenses correspond to 4K production standards (4096 x 2160). The Compact Zoom CZ.2 lenses offer better protection against typical environmental influences on the set such as splashing water and dust.

“Thanks to its many characteristics, the Compact Zoom CZ.2 lenses are also suitable for professional big-screen productions together with the ARRI/ZEISS Master Prime and ARRI/ZEISS Ultra Prime lenses, and therefore build an ideal set of cine zooms for the rental market,” adds Schiehlen.

Sales of the Compact Zoom CZ.2 15-30/T2.9 are expected to begin at the NAB in April 2014. It is not yet possible to place orders. The recommended price will be under €20,000 (excluding VAT).

“What makes the Master Anamorphic family which we have developed with ARRI so special is that it renders particularly distortion-free widescreens for big-screen productions,” says Anna Rausch, product manager from ZEISS Camera Lenses about the world premiere. “Our anamorphic lenses are the first on the market in which the cylindrical lens elements are positioned at strategically important points in the lens. These lens elements are responsible for creating an anamorphic widescreen.” The ARRI/ZEISS Master Anamorphic MA 100/T1.9 is the fourth member of the family of lenses, which will eventually consist of seven focal lengths. Already available are the MA 35/T1.9, MA 50/T1.9 and MA 75/T1.9. Through their combination of compact design and a high speed of T1.9, the lenses can be used quickly and easily on many different types of sets. ZEISS and ARRI first launched the Master Anamorphic family of lenses in 2012 for ARRI movie cameras. They were developed and assembled by ZEISS. Marketing is done exclusively by ARRI.

In addition to these premieres, ZEISS will also present its entire comprehensive portfolio of lenses for big-screen productions and HD video during the IBC: from the ARRI/ZEISS Master Anamorphic, ARRI/ZEISS Master Prime and ARRI/ZEISS Ultra Prime; to the ZEISS Compact Prime CP.2 and ZEISS Compact Zoom CZ.2; and finally the ZEISS SLR lenses. Visitors to ZEISS’s booth can try out the lenses on the latest cameras, and ZEISS experts will be available to answer questions.
