Usain Bolt Celebrates With Lightning Bolt
AFP Photographer Olivier Morin captured this extraordinary shot of Usain Bolt with an extra bolt in the back ground. The image is one of the two frames that captured at the IAAF World Championships in Moscow 2013, using a remote-controlled camera.
Olivier Morin wrote, “My hand-held shots are transmitted directly to AFP’s photo editors, while those from the remote-controlled device go straight to my laptop. I started looking through these images one at a time – there were a few decent shots on the first four cameras. Then I opened up the pictures from the final camera.
I admit, with only a thumbnail view at first, I didn’t even see the lightning in the background, but after a moment I saw four photos with the bolt in the sky. Two of these weren’t usable because the cloud was too dark and the lightning was hard to see. But with the other two images, thanks to a little luck, the lightning is nice and visible; I’d gotten “the” shot.”

Press Release:
Casio Launches High Speed EXILIM with Powerful Image Stabilization
Ready to Capture High-quality Hand-held Night Scenes and Zoom Shots Equipped with Time Lapse for Playing Back Long – time Changes in a Short Time
Norderstedt , August 7 , 2013 — Casio Europe GmbH and its parent company, Casio Computer Co., Ltd., today announced the release of the EX-ZR800, a new model in its popular High Speed EXILIM line of digital cameras . With all the responsive photo – taking features of a High Speed EXILIM, the new camera also packs a powerful 18x optical zoom and comes with 5-axis, 5-stop*1 image stabilization.
With the aim of providing digital cameras that enable people to capture fleeting moments with beautiful images, Casio has been pursuing the full potential of the compact digital camera using its original high – speed technologies. This effort is based on the company’s “Triple Zero” development objective, which seeks to minimize and eliminate shutter lag, out-of-focus shots, and image blurring due to camera shake.
The new EX-ZR800 uses highly advanced image stabilization technology to virtually eliminate the impact of camera shake , a common problem which has been the cause of many a ruined photograph.
A powerful 25 mm wide – angle,*2 18x optical zoom lens is fitted elegantly into the compact body. When shooting in HS Anti Shake mode, camera shake occurring along five axes*1 (Vertical Shift, Horizontal Shift , etc.) is precisely corrected. Going even further, Casio has integrated optical image stabilization (2 stops*3) with its technology for combining high-speed burst images (up to 9 shots) to achie ve stabilization equivalent to 5 stops slower*1 in terms of shutter speed. This allows users to take amazingly crisp, clear photos without a tripod — even night scenes and zoom shots — making the camera ideal for capturing images like city lights while traveli ng or zoom photos of children playing or competing in sporting events.
The new camera also features other enhanced shooting functions. This is the first EXILIM to have a Time Lapse function that allows users to capture the movement of clouds in the sky, or people and cars at an intersection, showing long-time movement sped up. Casio has added a new “sparkling shot” filter effect to ART Shot, which lets users create original artistic photos and movies. These functions make it easy to take creative shots without changing lenses or making complicated settings.
Main Features of the EX-ZR800
Powered by the new EXILIM Engine HS Ver. 3
The new cameras are equipped with EXILIM Engine HS Ver. 3 driven by a dual-CPU, two parallel image processors , a reconfigurable processor and a vector graphics core. The reconfigurable processor delivers functional and performance flexibility plus high-speed processing based on the latest technologies from Casio, while the vector graphics core smoothly produces two – dimensional images . In addition to high – speed shooting response,*4 the new models feature an intuitive display screen that is easy to view, thanks to its high – quality gra phic user interface.
Compact body with high – quality high – power zoom
The EX-ZR800 is equipped with a wide – angle 25 mm, 18x optical zoom lens. The zoom maintains super resolution image quality to a maximum zoom of 36x, thanks to Multi Frame SR Zoom technology.
HS Anti Shake performs 5 – axis, 5 – stop*5 image stabilization
Camera shake which occurs in the five axes*5 of pitch, yaw, vertical shift, horizontal shift and roll is precisely corrected. Casio has employed an optical lens that achieves stabilization equivalent to approximately 2 stops*6 slower in terms of shutter speed. Bringing this effect together with combined high – speed burst images results in image stabilization equivalent to about 5 stops slower*5 in terms of shutter speed. This allows users to minimize blur while holding the camera to take pictures, which can easily result in camera shake, even for shots of night scenes and when zooming. (Results may vary depending on the shooting environment and camera settings). In addition, the EX-ZR800 employs a lens-shift optical lens, which further reduces image blur on the LCD screen when recording movies or holding the camera.
Time Lapse plays back long – time changes in a short time for a new form of expression
The new Time Lapse feature allows users to capture the slow movement of clouds in the sky, or of people and cars on a street, and then show long-time movement sped up. The capture interval and time for clouds, night views, vehicles, street scenes and so on are preset, so all the user has to do is simply select the scene to shoot to get the optimum setting. Of course, users can also adjust the settings manually.
Triple Shot reduces shutter lag from the photographer’s reflexes close to zero
The new cameras feature Triple Shot, which combines high-speed burst shooting with high-speed response for worry-free photography. The feature not only takes an image when the shutter button is pressed, but also captures images immediately before and after. As a result, Triple Shot enables users to capture decisive moments with quickly moving subjects such as children and pets.
Inset display for reviewing shots on part of the LCD screen while taking photos
The new model also features an inset display on part of the LCD screen to show images just taken. This feature is convenient for photographing children because it allows users to check each shot, while responsively ta king more pictures. Users can select from two different inset display screens.
AF – CS keeps moving subjects in focus even while continuously shooting
Casio has accelerated the frame rate in the auto focus (AF) mode and optimized the camera’s lens drive control, image sensor control and AF algorithm for parallel processing of AF operations and high-speed continuous shooting. Built into the EX-ZR800, this makes it possible to achieve AF-CS up to 30 frames and as fast as five frames-per-second, which makes it possible to take clear photos of moving subjects such as children and pets.
All-In-Focus Macro and Blurred Background deliver total focus control with high – speed continuous shooting
The EX-ZR800 comes with All-In-Focus Macro, which selects only in-focus areas from continuously shot images at different focus settings to produce a composite image. This achieves photos with every area coming out in focus, from foreground subjects to far-away backgrounds, which are hard to produce using a conventional camera. Also, Casio has employed its high-speed continuous shooting technologies to create Blurred Background, an original technique for processing the background scene of a shot like the soft blur effect attainable using a single-lens reflex camera, thereby accentuating the subject of the photo. Users can select from three different processing levels of blur effects to set the background focus just as they wish.
Premium Auto Pro function produces beautiful photos with just a press of the shutter button
The Premium Auto Pro function automatically analyzes the shooting scene to choose the best settings and perform image processing. It automatically combines images from high-speed burst shooting according to shooting conditions to create gorgeous photos. Users can easily take sophisticated photos at the press of the shutter button, thanks to the automatic activation of functions such as HDR technology, which combines photos of differing exposures to handle high-contrast conditions, as well as High Speed Night Scene mode for night shots and High Speed Anti Shake for high-power zoom shooting, both of which combine highly sensitive, continuously shot images, taken with camera shake kept at a minimum, to reduce noise in the resulting image. For movies, the Premium Auto M ovie function automatically analyzes the scene to choose the best settings.
HDR technology faithfully reproduces images as they really appear, avoiding under- or over-exposure
The new model also uses HDR technology developed by Casio to allow each press of the shutter button to take several shots at different exposures and then instantly combine them into a single image with a high dynamic range. This minimizes over- exposed or under-exposed areas in the image, creating a photo that captures all the rich tonal gradation of the scene just as it appears in real life.
HS Night Shot eliminates camera shake even in dark settings
With HS Night Shot, the EX-ZR800 detects shooting conditions and conducts high-speed burst shooting of numerous frames determined automatically with a level of light sensitivity as high as ISO 25600. High-precision positioning alignment technology suppresses any low-frequency camera shake that may not be completely eliminated by the optical Anti Shake correction function. The company’s latest image-processing technology also completely removes low-frequency color noise, which has typically been very difficult for cameras to eliminate. These technologies work together to produce beautiful photos with minimal blur, even in low-light conditions.
HDR – ART for creating artistic photos; freedom to create artistic images with ART Shot
Users can create artistic photos using the HDR – ART function, which combines continuous shots with differing exposures while performing advanced analysis to locally c hange the intensity of contrast and color saturation. Users can now choose from a total of five different processing levels of art effects to enjoy creating more freely expressive images. Additionally, to creat e the artistic photos of the user’s preference using Art Shot, new “sparkling shot” filter effect has been added to eight different filter effect s previously available: toy camera, soft focus, light tone, pop art, sepia, monochrome, miniature and fisheye. Users can select from three different color and processing levels for each filter (select an area from six patterns for miniature) , and can view the effect on the display and adjust the result prior to actually taking a picture. Even better, all of these filters except “sparkling shot” can be used for shooting movies, too. The HDR – ART function simultaneously saves both the HDR – ART image and the standard photo with a single press of the shutter button.
Scenes come alive in their full expansiveness with the Wide Shot function
The EX-ZR800 can combine continuous shots taken with high-speed continuous shooting when the user is moving the camera, enabling powerful super-wide-angle shots. Users can select wide-angle shooting modes equivalent to 15 mm or 19 mm.
Slide Panorama captures 360 – degree panoramic images
The Slide Panorama function detects moving subjects and faces and adjusts them appropriately as the camera is moved, allowing users to create more natural-looking panoramic images just by panning the camera across a scene.
Mode dial for rapid access to shooting modes
The camera is fitted with a mode dial that lets users quickly choose from several shooting modes.
High-resolution 3.0-inch 920K LCD
The EX-ZR800 boasts a high-resolution 3.0-inch LCD with 920,000 pixels, displaying captured images beautifully on the screen. EX-ZR800.

A Premium Flat Body Camera with a Host of Creative Functions for Photo Enthusiasts and Artisans
NEWARK, NJ (August 1, 2013) – Panasonic is pleased to announce a new addition of LUMIX G Digital Single Lens Mirrorless (DSLM) Camera, the DMC-GX7, featuring high photographic performance and a sleek design which incorporates a tiltable LVF (Live View Finder).
Dressed in magnesium alloy full diecast frame in black and silver the new LUMIX GX7 allows photographers to change their viewing perspective with a newly integrated 90-degree tiltable LVF. The new LVF features 2764K-dot high resolution and 100% color reproduction based on a Field Sequential Color Accuracy method**. This 16:9 Wide Screen LVF boasts approx.1.39x / 0.7x (35mm camera equiv.) magnification and 100% field of view. The tiltable LVF offers extraordinary angle of view with unique shooting style – looking down into the viewfinder to level the camera straight on the subject. It comes with an Eye Sensor that automatically turns ON/OFF according to the photographer’s action. The Eye Sensor AF (Auto Focus) automatically begins to focus when a user looks into the LVF, so no shooting opportunity is missed. An Eye Cup, DMW-EC1GU, made of elastic material is sold separately to enhance comfort in viewing either with the naked eye or glasses.
The LUMIX GX7 is a new breed of digital camera suitable for the Hybrid Photographer. It’s capable of recording full HD 1920 x 1080, 60p (60 Hz) / 50p (50 Hz) smooth, high quality video recording in AVCHD Progressive and MP4 with stereo sound. The practical full-time AF and tracking AF is also available in video recording mode. The cinema-like 24p video with the bit rate of max. 24Mbps or P/A/S/M mode provides richly expressive afterimage with exquisite image quality. The Digital Live MOS Sensor greatly improves motion picture quality.
The LUMIX GX7 incorporates Creative Panorama, Time Lapse Shot, Stop Motion Animation or Clear Retouch in addition to the popular Creative Control mode with a total of 22 fascinating filter effects
A new in-body Image Stabilizer is nearly as effective as the MEGA O.I.S. found in Panasonic’s conventional DSLM lenses, which makes it easier to take clear photos with mounted non-stabilized and classic lenses. The LUMIX GX7 is also compatible with Focus Peaking for more precise control of focusing. In Silent Mode, the camera switches the shutter from mechanical to electronic and turns all sound (AF operation) off while suppressing emission of AF assist lamp and flash with just a single setting for special shooting occasions. Furthermore, the LUMIX GX7 allows photographers to use a max. 1/8000 shutter speed for more impressive expression with high speed lens options.
Panasonic developed a new 16.00-megapixel Digital Live MOS Sensor for LUMIX GX7 that achieves both high resolution and high sensitivity image recording with minimum noise by utilizing cutting-edge Semiconductor Fine Technology to improve color saturation by approx. 10% and a redesigned on-chip lens that enhances light condensation to achieve approx. 10% higher sensitivity. Noise generation is minimized in both pixel circuit and digital signal readout circuit for better S/N ratio by approx. 25% and detail reproduction by approx.10% compared to the LUMIX DMC-GX1, making it possible to capture clear images even in low lit situations. The image processor Venus Engine features advanced noise reduction systems, including Multi-process NR (Noise Reduction) and Detail Reproduction Filter Process, which enhances the limit resolution. The combination of the digital Live MOS Sensor and the Venus Engine achieves max. ISO 25,600.
The Contrast AF System of the LUMIX GX7 excels in both speed and accuracy by exchanging digital signals between the camera and the lens at max. 240 fps. A variety of extensive AF functions including Low Light AF (-4EV), Pin-point AF and One-shot AF enhances usability to comply with a wide-range of shooting situations. In Pinpoint AF, picture-in-picture display is available and the magnification ratio of in-frame picture is selectable from 3x to 6x. The One Shot AF function can be allocated to the AF/AE Lock Button (AF/MF Switch Lever) for more flexible control over focusing.
The LUMIX GX7 incorporates high speed response desired for the digital single lens mirrorless camera, taking only approx. 0.5 sec* to get ready to shoot after startup. The LUMIX GX7 also realizes the high speed burst shooting at 5 fps and max. 40 fps using an electronic shutter. Also, AF Tracking enables consecutive shooting to capture moving subject in sharp focus at 4.3 fps.
At the same time, Panasonic designed ease of operation into the LUMIX GX7. Two separate dials on front and back offer direct control over aperture, shutter speed or exposure, which achieves smooth manual shooting. The Live View function is also digitally advanced, making it possible to adjust highlight / shadow separately with the front/rear dial. Three patterns of settings can be customized in addition to three patterns of presets. In addition, the Fn (Function) tab is newly integrated into the menu, which means a total of nine functions can be assigned (five in tab and four with the button).
The LUMIX GX7 integrates Wi-Fi® connectivity (IEEE 802.11 b/g/n) with NFC (Near Field Communication) technology to offer a more flexible shooting experience and seamless instant image sharing. All of these flexible shooting, browsing, and sharing styles are made possible with the LUMIX GX7 and Panasonic’s dedicated application software and the Panasonic Image App for iOS / Android smartphones/tablets.

Press Release:
PANASONIC ANNOUNCES THE FASTEST INTERCHANGEABLE LENS FOR THE LUMIX G SERIES CAMERAS
NEWARK, NJ (August 1, 2013) Panasonic today announced the LEICA DG NOCTICRON 42.5mm F1.2 lens, the fastest (1) interchangeable lens in the Micro Four Thirds standard for the LUMIX G Series cameras.
Previously, Panasonic has marketed interchangeable lenses meeting LEICA specifications, including the LEICA DG SUMMILUX 25mm/F1.4 ASPH. and the LEICA DG MACRO-ELMARIT 45mm/F2.8 ASPH./MEGA O.I.S. The name “NOCTICRON” was defined by Leica Camera AG for this lens type continuing LEICA’s legendary elements of large diameter, high quality lenses. The LEICA DG NOCTICRON 42.5mm/F1.2 achieves the fastest (1) F1.2 for a Micro Four Thirds interchangeable lens, becoming the first large diameter, high performance NOCTICRON lens.
Panasonic will continue to further advance its product development to meet the diverse needs of customers in the globally expanding Micro Four Thirds market.
