Stocksy United Stock Photography – Finally Fair Compensation For Photographers
Press Release:
STOCKSY TRANSFORMS STOCK PHOTO LICENSING WITH CO-OP STRUCTURE, FAIR COMPENSATION FOR PHOTOGRAPHERS
VICTORIA, BRITISH COLUMBIA (March 25, 2013) — Stocksy, a digital licensing co-op launching March 25, 2013, is a new concept in the world of stock photography: An online marketplace owned collectively by its photographer-members and dedicated to paying them the maximum fees possible for their work.
Founded by Bruce Livingstone, who invented microstock with iStockphoto—which he sold to Getty Images in 2006 —Stocksy was built out of his experience shaping the ground floor of the sector. Stocksy is a cooperative designed to respect the work of the artist and whose very system of shared ownership and profit sharing allows for real, sustainable careers for all participants in the marketplace.
Under its revolutionary model, photographers will receive a 50% royalty on each transaction and 100% on extended licenses; what’s more, 90% of all profits will be divided among members at year’s end. Photographers who are accepted into the co-op also receive equity and have a real say in how the business is operated.
‘We wanted to create a marketplace for photographers that was not only democratic, but fair and sustainable,’ Livingstone says. ‘There’s no reason these artists shouldn’t be able to earn a living from what they produce. We believe that through this equitable, participatory structure and a straightforward, transparent compensation system – combined with the knowledge of the marketplace we bring to the table – Stocksy will quickly amass the finest pool of photographic content on the Web.’
The Canadian-born Livingstone followed several divergent paths – including theology studies at the University of Calgary and drumming in punk-rock band The Bittermen – before starting iStockphoto in 2000. Initially it was a free service, but growing traffic required him to begin charging small, incremental fees to cover bandwidth costs; thus was microstock licensing born.
When Getty acquired iStockphoto, it also acquired him. But Livingstone saw that the democratization that iStockPhoto brought to the marketplace didn’t go far enough. More innovation was required to bring fairness into the equation.
The conception of Stocksy brings Livingstone full circle to the dawning days of iStockphoto – but this time, substantive royalties and member ownership are built into its design. ‘Photographers have never had this level of participation and control in the stock world,’ he says. ‘We believe Stocksy represents an opportunity to change the industry permanently – and for the better.’

Features
At the time of this writing Canon EOS 100D / Rebel SL1 is the smallest and lightest DSLR to have ever been made. Canon has successfully able to fit in an 18 megapixels 22.3 x 14.9 mm sensor inside a 116.8 x 90.7 x 69.4 mm body. It feels very small compared to even the smallest entry level DSLR that Canon has the 1100D. Further the weight of the body is only 370 grams as compared to the 1100D (450 grams).
The EOS Rebel SL1 has an 18 megapixel CMOS (APS-C) sensor, that performs very well in low light shooting environments with an ISO range of 100-12800 (expandable to H: 25600) for photos and ISO-6400 (expandable to H: 12800) for video. Canon’s DIGIC 5 Image Processor technology can render exceptional image quality and shooting speed up to four frames per second (fps).
The camera’s a new nine-point center cross-type autofocus (AF) system achieves fast, sharp focus. The new Hybrid CMOS AF II sensor, provides a wider focus area for shooting both photos or video in Live View mode.
To make the video capture easy, the EOS Rebel SL1 features Movie Servo AF for smooth continuous AF tracking of moving subjects. With the new generation STM lenses, such as the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM, the Movie Servo AF takes advantage of the lens’ stepping motor mechanism for smooth and quiet continuous AF. The camera can shoot Full HD movies in a number of recording sizes and frame rates, with manual control of exposure, focus and Live View options. The combination of Canon’s new Hybrid CMOS AF system II and EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens ensures noise free video recording.
The three inch Touch Screen Clear View LCD monitor II Allows clear and easy viewing even in bright environments & provides intuitive touch panel operation. Two finger touch gestures (multi-touch) allows easy zooming or changing images, accessing menu and quick control settings, and activating focus point and shutter release while shooting
The EOS Rebel SL1’s Scene Intelligent Auto Mode, can detects faces, colors, brightness, movement, contrast, distance and other factors and automatically adjusts and selects the correct exposure needed for the scene, ideal for users without advanced photography knowledge or experience.
The new Effect Shot mode, automatically creates two different shots, one with a selected creative filter and one without. In addition, Creative Filters and Background Blur Simulation can now be displayed in real time during Live View shooting. Advanced in-camera editing and cropping functionality allow users to view and crop the image using the camera’s LCD touch screen and save the edited version as a separate file. Also included the new special scene modes presets like Kids, Food and Candlelight for more creative shooting option.
Canon EOS 700D vs EOS100D
The good
Very small, ideal for people with smaller hands. However this camera may feel too small for comfort in larger hands.
Live view shooting, for movies has facial recognition.
The 3” LCD touch-screen has a resolution of 1,040,000 dots and comes with auto / manual brightness control feature.
The Bad
Like all small (read entry level) DSLRs built around an APS-C sensor, the EOS 100D also has less than 100% viewfinder coverage. In this case it is only 95%.
The continuous shooting speed of only 4 fps is not going to win any prizes. But then this is not an advanced camera, designed for sports or action photography and should be respected for what it can do more than what it can’t.
No quiet mode, so forget discreet street photography or candid portraitures.
Uses the newly designed LP-E12 battery pack which offers only 380 shots when using the viewfinder. Number of shots you get when using live view is much less. Comparatively the 1100 D which uses the LP-E10 battery pack offers 700 shots when using the viewfinder.

Canon Rebel T5i/700D priced just marginally higher than the Rebel SL1 is a much better camera in terms of options, grip and overall ergonomics. The EOS SL1 may appear far too small for comfort for someone with big man hands. At a good $150 less the Rebel T3i is also a great option.
Should I buy it?
If you have small hands this is probably your first choice DSLR. The next best choice would be the still available 1100D. The 100D however has a better sensor with more megapixels. Available at Amazon | Adorama | B&H

Canon EOS 100D vs EOS 700D – First Look
Features
The EOS 700D also known as the Canon Rebel T5i in the US was launched within one year of the Rebel T4i. Both the cameras have the same tilty flippy LCD screen, 18 megapixels CMOS APS-C sensor and both feature the same 9-point AF system that Canon has come to be recognized with. However here all the 9 AF points are cross type providing better auto-focusing performance.
Expand Your Creativity with New Advanced Features
The EOS Rebel T5i provides amateur and advanced photographers looking to hone their creative and technical skills with a range of features that allow for crisp, clear images.Whether it is adding saturation to a vivid landscape or applying a unique, vintage touch to a portrait, users who want to express their creativity can experiment with different effects and settings, composing a shot, by using one of Canon’s seven Creative Filters. When the Creative Filters are applied in Live View, users can preview the filter on the vari-angle three inch LCD touch screen without having to shoot the image first. Effects such as ArtBold, Water Painting, Grainy Black and White, Soft Focus, Toy Camera, Fish- Eye and Miniature let users pick and choose how to best express their creative vision before or after the image is captured.
Enhanced EOS Full HD Movie Mode
The EOS Rebel T5i offers easy-to-use professional video capture. When users switch to EOS Full HD Movie mode, the EOS Rebel T5i offers the ability to shoot in 1080p Full HD video in a number of recording sizes and frame rates. With Canon’s Hybrid CMOS AF System and Movie Servo AF, the camera provides continuous AF for focus tracking of moving subjects by helping to reduce the camera’s need to “hunt”, resulting in a quick and smooth continuous AF. While shooting with one of Canon’s Stepping Motor (STM) lenses, such as the new EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens, the camera will only capture the stereo sound of the scene being recorded. For added flexibility, the EOS Rebel T5i also features a built-in stereo microphone with manual audio level adjustment to enhance sound quality.
The good
The 700D’s hybrid CMOS sensor has phase detection auto-focusing in live-view mode. This hypothetically should be much better than the standard auto-focusing system of the 650D. Which means auto-focusing during your video shooting or when using the LCD screen should be much better. In real life however the 650D and the 700D is not that different when shooting in live view mode.
In live view mode it is possible to lock focus to a subject by tapping on the LCD screen.
The Bad
The viewfinder has only 95% coverage. Additionally there is no auto-focus illuminator lamp. When shooting in pitch dark the flash, if allowed will fire intermittently and try to find focus. No buit-in wifi as EOS 6D.
Similar Products
We don’t have to look very far to find suitable alternatives to the 700D. The model that it replaces 650D is no longer available but the earlier model 600D is still available and is still a great camera to buy. The other one is Nikon’s D5200 which is at this time the biggest rival for the 700D. The D5200 uses the same fancy auto-focusing system as the higher end model D7000 uses and also has 24 megapixels to boot.
Should I buy it?
Ideally the 700D should be one of the choices if you’re looking for an entry level DSLR. If you already own an entry level DSLR this is not something that you should be upgrading too. If you’re given a choice between the 700D and the D5200, ergonomically it can be a toss up and will all boil down to whether you’re a Canon guy or a Nikon guy. They are both good cameras and honestly I love the 9-point all cross type AF system. At the end of the day the decision is purely personal but if you’re going to invest in an entry level DSLR that’s good, choosing the 700D wouldn’t be a bad decision.

Exceptional Images and Fast Performance
The PowerShot SX280 HS digital camera is packed with a variety of impressive imaging features that help ensure moments are preserved in stunning quality. In conjunction with the PowerShot SX280 HS digital camera’s 12.1-megapixel High-Sensitivity CMOS image sensor, the DIGIC 6 Image Processor creates the Canon HS SYSTEM. This system is responsible for the PowerShot SX280 HS digital camera’s improved low-light performance up to ISO 6400, with minimal noise and maximum detail.
In addition, the PowerShot SX280 HS digital camera features advancements in Canon’s Auto Focus (AF) system with improved AF times and reduced lag over previous SX-series models. The responsive high-speed AF helps users to capture great shots as they happen, with reduced lag time. Adding to the camera’s diverse feature-set is High-Speed Burst HQ which allows for continuous, fast-action, high-resolution shots at up to 14fps. With incredible zoom capabilities, fast and responsive AF, stunning resolution and easy-to-use features, the PowerShot SX280 HS digital camera is the perfect camera for vacationing or capturing a morning soccer game.
Further advancements attributed to DIGIC 6 Image Processor can be experienced in movie mode, which records in MP4 format. For added flexibility, the PowerShot SX280 HS digital camera allows you to shoot video in a selectable frame rate of up to 60 fps or up to 30 fps resulting in smooth and rich 1080p Full HD video. Users will also notice improved image stabilization with Dynamic IS, which detects and can compensate for tilt and parallel movement (shift blur) to help create improved video clarity.
Simplicity and Convenience
The PowerShot SX280 HS digital camera offers a variety of easy-to-use features that help take the guesswork out of capturing captivating, imaginative photos. With Smart AUTO, the camera identifies an ideal image setting by intelligently selecting from one of 58 pre-defined modes. To combat blurry images, the PowerShot SX280 HS digital camera utilizes its Intelligent IS system, which draws from six different stabilization modes to choose the best IS for the current shooting condition. The Intelligent IS system, combined with Smart AUTO creates the camera’s Hybrid AUTO mode which helps create a beautiful and steady HD video clip (up to approximately 4 seconds) in Movie Digest mode every time a user shoots a still image while the Movie Digest mode is activated.
Adding to the camera’s diverse feature set, the PowerShot SX280 HS digital camera is also equipped with a built-in GPS receiver5, and when activated, data is recorded along with each image. Users can easily access the location where their photos were taken without depending on their often vague post-vacation memory. The built-in GPS receiver not only records the exact location of the shot, but users can create a visual log of their journeys on a map using the bundled Canon software.
To further help ensure that an image is never missed, the PowerShot SX280 HS digital camera comes equipped with ECO mode to assist with battery conservation. ECO Mode manages the 3.0 inch, 461k LCD screen brightness and turns off when the camera is inactive. ECO Mode can be activated for easy power preservation when an additional battery is out of reach or the moment is too exciting to put the camera down.
