Spider Monkey is a compact yet durable holster clip that easily attaches to any belt or camera bag loop allowing photographers to hang their most-used equipment for quick-draw accessibility. Combined with a series of purpose-built Spider Monkey attachments, the new line offers photographers a new level of workflow flexibility. To learn more about the Spider Monkey Accessory Holster, photographers can visit http://spiderholster.com/spider-monkey.html, and attendees of the WPPI Expo (March 11-13, 2013 MGM Grand, Las Vegas, NV) can visit Spider Holster in booth #330 for a hands-on demonstration.
The scalable Spider Monkey accessory system eliminates the need for photographers to carry an added shoulder bag by hanging their most oft-used tools right on their belt. The durable Spider Monkey Base clip and tab are built for long-term use, with the ability to securely hold camera accessories weighing about one pound including flashes, light meters and battery packs. The Spider Monkey Tab attaches to the accessory with a robust adhesive tab (which removes cleanly after use) and an additional Velcro attachment band for ultimate security. “Offering the same great benefits and flexibility as our Spider Camera Holster, the Spider Monkey accessory clip completely eliminates the strain that comes with the tangle of equipment bags and swing of neck and shoulder straps by safely holstering the gear you need on your belt,” said Shai Eynav, President of Spider Holster. “By transferring the camera accessories to the waste, we add a new level of accessibility to essential gear that allows photographers to get the best image at the right time, whenever needed.”
In addition to the holster clip, adhesive tab and the Velcro attachment loop which comprise the base Spider Monkey system. Spider Holster will soon be offering several add-on purpose-built items that will further enhance the functionality of the Spider Monkey, including a water bottle pouch, modular rain cover, and lens pouches for small to medium sized lenses.
The base Spider Monkey system, with holster clip, adhesive tab and the Velcro attachment loop will carry an MSRP of $17.00. Spider Monkey will be available for purchase at Spider Holster authorized dealers.

Sigma announces pricing and availability for 30mm F1.4 DC HSM, 30mm F2.8 DN and 19mm F2.8 DN
RONKONKOMA, N.Y., — March 8, 2013 — Sigma Corporation of America, a leading researcher, developer, manufacturer and service provider of some of the world’s most impressive lines of lenses, cameras and flashes, today announced the pricing and availability of three new lenses from its ART lens category, including two lenses for mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras and one lens for DSLR cameras with APS-C size sensors.
The updated 30mm F1.4 DC HSM lens will be available in late March for the street price of $499 in Sigma, Canon and Nikon mounts. The 30mm F2.8 DN and 19mm F2.8 DN lenses, which are available for both Micro Four Thirds and Sony E-Mount camera systems, will be also be available in late March for the street price of $199.
All three lenses are existing focal lengths that have been redesigned and quality-control tested with Sigma’s proprietary modulation transfer function (MTF) “A1” measuring system as part of Sigma’s new Global Visioncategory restructuring.
The original 30mm F1.4 from Sigma helped the family-owned manufacturer pioneer the large-aperture, APS-C format, standard lens category in 2005. Now, it boasts new optical configurations and an optimized focusing system. Both DN lenses incorporate telecentric optical designs and a linear, auto focusing motor that ensures accurate and quiet focusing for video recording. They have metal exteriors and a simply shaped focus ring, with varying textures to distinguish each part of the lens. In addition, DN users can choose between a black or silver finish on these lenses.
“These lenses are exactly what we envisioned when we announced the ART products in our Global Vision lineup,” said Mark Amir-Hamzeh, president of Sigma Corporation of America. “They enable extreme artistic expression with impressive versatility and optical sophistication, and we’re really excited to get them into our users’ hands. The new Global Vision lenses have been a huge success already – and we expect these new releases to continue that momentum.”
Here are more details on these lenses from Sigma:
- Sigma 19mm F2.8 DN – This high-performance, wide-angle lens has an angle of view equivalent to 38mm on the Micro Four Thirds system and 28.5mm on the E-mount system (35mm equivalent focal length). As a wide-angle lens with excellent mobility, it is ideal for studio photography, architecture and starry skies. Its minimum focusing distance is 7.9 inches and its maximum magnification is 1:7.4.
- Sigma 30mm F2.8 DN – This high-performance, standard lens has an angle of view equivalent to 60mm on the Micro Four Thirds system and 45mm on the E-mount system (35mm equivalent focal length). This lens, which is perfect for casual and formal portraiture, documentary photography, travelogues and everyday shooting, includes a double-sided aspherical lens that enhances its optical performance. Its minimum focusing distance of 11.8 inches and its maximum magnification is 1:8.1.
- 30mm F1.4 DC HSM – With new optical configurations of eight elements in nine groups, as well as rounded aperture blades, the updated 30mm F1.4 lens delivers pleasing sharpness and beautiful bokeh. Its angle of view is equivalent to 45mm on a 35mm camera (which is similar to that of human vision), its minimum focusing distance is 11.8 inches and its maximum magnification ratio is 1:6.8. The lens’ optimized power distribution helps to minimize field curvature, prevent a loss of image quality at the edges of photographs and produce outstanding image quality. Its double-aspheric lens minimizes spherical distortion, astigmatism and coma, and its rear-focus system prevents focus-dependent variation in aberration. Together, the new optimized auto focus (AF) algorithm and rear focusing system ensure smooth and accurate focusing. The new 30mm F1.4 is also compatible with Sigma’s new USB Dock, which will enable firmware updates and focusing adjustments, and is expected to be available in coming months.

Kenoro Announces Nissin PS 8 Power Pack
Press Release
Multi-functional Nissin PS 8 Power Pack showcased at Focus on Imaging
Friday March 8, 2013: Kenro, the official UK distributors of Nissin Flash Guns, has launched a new all-powerful power pack from Nissin, the PS 8 version, with added features to provide more power and faster charging time for photographers.
Those visiting the trade show at the NEC got the chance to see the unit in action as well as learning about its all-new features through visiting the Kenro stand in Hall 9 Stand L2.
Compared to its predecessor, the core boosting circuit of the Nissin Power Pack PS 8 has been redesigned in order to reduce heat, and now uses high-strength plastic instead of metal housing for the body. As a result, its size is now more compact whilst not compromising on performance. For maximum versatility, belt buckles and a shoulder strap have also been incorporated into the pack for convenient use at any time.
Another key feature added to the new PS 8 version is its exclusive battery cartridge design. Introduced for the first time to a Nissin power pack, its design greatly increases the battery capability whilst also helping to decrease its overall weight, solving a number of key issues that can be encountered by using power packs. The number of flashes per charge has also been increased compared to its previous model, providing peace of mind that the PS 8 will go the distance.
Other new features include the addition of an LED indication lamp. When the battery level reaches 30%, it turns from “green” to “red” to “flashing red” to indicate the battery is nearly discharged, providing reassurance that the user will never be caught by surprise at an important shoot.
The sophisticated design of the new PS 8 now includes a USB charging socket which supports DC 5V output to provide maximum charging solutions for the photographer on-the-go.
Other features of the Nissin PS 8 Power Pack:
- Output sockets: Flash external power socket x 2 (same as PS300), USB (Type A, power output only) x 1
- Output voltage: DC 320V
- Flash Charging time: 0.5 – 0.7 sec (full power illumination)
- Battery type: Ni-MH battery pack
- Battery life (Approx): 550 times (full power output)
- Battery level indication: LED type (100 – 30%: green, Lower than 30%: red, Battery low: blinking red)

- Weight: 761g/27 oz (with Ni-MH battery pack)
Kenro managing director Paul Kench commented: “Nissin have taken every consideration of using a power pack into account to create the superb PS 8 version. Photographers need a pack that they can rely on and the PS 8 gives incredible reliability, thanks to the newly added features.”
The new Nissin PS 8 Power Pack is compatible with Canon, Nikon and Sony digital SLR cameras and is available now with a suggested retail price of £165 (incl VAT).

Nikon launches 16MP DX-format Coolpix A
Nikon Coolpix A
The Coolpix – A is an advanced compact Point & Shoot camera featuring a 16.2 megapixels APS-C CMOS sensor. It is in fact the world’s smallest digital compact that sports an APS-C sensor.
Key features & specs
- 16.2 megapixels APS-C (DX) format CMOS sensor of size 23.6 x 15.6 mm.
- smallest compact Point & Shoot to have a APS-C sensor
- fixed focus 18.5mm lens (equivalent to 28mm on 35mm format)
- maximum aperture of f/2.8
- closest focusing distance of 1’ 8”
- Has face-priority in focusing which means it can detect faces and focus on them. saves an awful amount of time trying to focus on faces in a group shot
- shoots RAW in Nikon’s proprietary NEF format
- ISO sensitivity of 100-3200, further expandable to 6400
- 4 fps continuous shooting speed, with a maximum of 50 frames before the buffer overruns
- shoots video in full HD at 30p/25p/24p
- if very light (only 300 grams including the battery pack and memory card)
- dimensions (111 x 64.3 x 40.3 mm) are very small and the camera can fit in your palms (provided you have man sized palms)
- 3” LCD screen with a resolution of 921,000 dots. Comes with anti-reflection coating and 9 brightness control levels
The good
The Coolpix – A is a camera that has a lot of customizable buttons. For some one who is looking for a stand-in camera for his heavy DSLR the Coolpix – A is the right choice. Additionally the manual modes and the general layout of the buttons and dials are reminiscent of a Nikon DSLR, another reason why this is a serious camera.
Fixed focal length means you have less time fiddling with the zoom and more time to compose and click. The camera is actually faster considering that.
Has stereo mic for recording videos and a hotshoe for using additional contraptions.
The Bad
The 18.5mm fixed lens with an equivalent of 28mm on 35mm format is both an advantage an a disadvantage. Since there is no zooming feature the camera saves that extra few seconds where you try to get the composition right. However, if you love zoom you’re going to hate this camera because of the lack of this feature.
The lens uses contrast detect auto-focusing system and not phase detect meaning theoretically it is going to be a tag slow.
The camera is powered by the EN-EL20 battery pack and on a full charge only 230 shots are possible. If you’re gone for a while with no charging point, I suggest you carry a spare battery fully charged.
No optical or otherwise viewfinder, so all the composing has to be done via the 3” LCD screen which has a 100% coverage.
Similar Products
The Fuji X100s is definitely one camera that comes to mind in the prosumer compact category. The Fuji X100s looks definitely a Leica M9 and is very well built in comparison to the Coolpix – A. Additionally the Fuji has an Optical / Electronic viewfinder which the claim is quite bright. Also check canon G1x
Should I buy it?
The Coolpix – A is around a few hundred bucks cheaper than its nearest rival the Fuji X100s. If you don’t feel too disconcerted about the fact that the Coolpix is not built like a tank then go for it as it has everything that you would expect from a DSLR without the drag of the extra weight.

Phase One Announces IQ280, IQ260 and IQ260 Achromatic Ultra-High Megapixel digital backs
Phase One Announces IQ2 Series Digital Camera Backs Pushes Image Quality Beyond Megapixels
COPENHAGEN, March 4, 2013: Phase One, the worlds leader in open-platform, medium format camera systems and solutions, today announced the Phase One IQ2 series: three new full-frame 645 format digital camera backs with high-speed wireless connectivity and 13 f-stops of dynamic range, plus new options to meet specific photographic goals. Building on the IQ digital back platform, the first choice of many of the worlds leading photographers, the technical advances in the Phase One IQ280, IQ260 and IQ260 Achromatic go beyond delivering ultra-high megapixel resolution to introduce greater mobility and workflow flexibility for professional photographers.
Instead of trying to make our wireless connection a replacement for a wired file transfer, as others have done, our solution focuses on helping get the right image capture — whether that means perfecting composition or focus, or simply easing the challenges of capturing a hard-to-reach image from a remote location, said Jan H. Christiansen, marketing director, Phase One.
All IQ2 camera backs feature full-frame 645 format sensors designed collaboratively by Phase One and Teledyne Dalsa to deliver the worlds best image quality. In addition, Phase One IQ2 camera backs deliver a full 13 f-stops of dynamic range, which combined with meticulous calibration and careful hardware and software optimization ensures that the image quality is matched by no other camera.
The 80 megapixel IQ280 puts Wi-Fi in a new perspective, enabling remote image capture and viewing of huge 80 megapixel images on an iPad running Phase Ones Capture Pilot App. It represents the pinnacle of image quality. With an ISO as low as 35, no other camera or digital back can get better silk-like images.
The 60 megapixel IQ260 offers unparalleled capture versatility, with exposure ranges from 1/10000s to one hour with virtually noise-free images. The 60 megapixel sensor at the heart of the IQ260 is a unique 645 format full-frame device found only in this digital back. It offers the widest exposure range opportunities on the market coupled with phenomenal image quality. And both the IQ280 and IQ260 capture raw images at 16-bit color depth per channel, enabling reproduction of scenes with ultra-smooth transitions.
The Phase One IQ260 Achromatic is a dedicated image capture device designed to deliver the highest-quality pure black and white images. It fully shares the IQ2 series unplugged assets. At the core of this system is a 60-megapixel sensor with no color filter array mounted, which means that no interpolation is necessary. Each and every pixel of the sensor is focused purely on capturing the finest details of an image. This digital back comes with no mounted IR cut-off filter, and the IQ260 Achromatic is capable of capturing image in three light spectrums: infrared, visible and ultraviolet — permitting photographers to experiment with a wide range of their choice of filters to create unique images for artistic and scientific purposes.
Capture Made Easy
All IQ2 backs include built-in accelerometers, whose input helps align images perfectly at the moment of capture. An intuitive virtual horizon offers a precise visual indication of an images roll and pitch; that data is automatically stored with the images and can be automatically corrected in Capture One software after import.
Rugged Build
IQ2 digital backs combine functional design with rugged build quality. Built of 100 percent aircraft grade aluminum, all electronic connectors and ports are protected with automatic retracting hatches or rubber covers to ensure that they work continuously even in the toughest shooting environments.
Capture One 7 Software
Capture One 7 is built on the world’s best raw processing engine and is included with all IQ2 backs, providing highly responsive precision tools to capture, organize, view, edit, share and print images for an efficient workflow and superior image quality results.
Availability and Pricing
The Phase One IQ2 series camera backs are expected to be available in June 2013; they may be ordered now through Phase One professional photography partners worldwide: www.phaseone.com/partners For a complete list of all the new Phase One IQ digital back features, including supported camera bodies, please see www.phaseone.com/iq2

Canon Developed A New 35mm High Sensitive Sensor For Video Cameras
TOKYO, March 4, 2013—Canon Inc. announced today that the company has successfully developed a high-sensitivity 35 mm full-frame CMOS sensor exclusively for video recording. Delivering high-sensitivity, low-noise imaging performance, the new Canon 35 mm CMOS sensor*1 enables the capture of Full HD video even in exceptionally low-light environments.
The newly developed CMOS sensor features pixels measuring 19 microns square in size, which is more than 7.5-times the surface area of the pixels on the CMOS sensor incorporated in Canon’s top-of-the-line EOS-1D X and other digital SLR cameras. In addition, the sensor’s pixels and readout circuitry employ new technologies that reduce noise, which tends to increase as pixel size increases. Thanks to these technologies, the sensor facilitates the shooting of clearly visible video images even in dimly lit environments with as little as 0.03 lux of illumination, or approximately the brightness of a crescent moon—a level of brightness in which it is difficult for the naked eye to perceive objects. When recording video of astral bodies, while an electron-multiplying CCD,*2 which realizes approximately the same level of perception as the naked eye, can capture magnitude-6 stars, Canon’s newly developed CMOS sensor is capable of recording faint stars with a magnitude of 8.5 and above.*3
Using a prototype camera employing the newly developed sensor, Canon successfully captured a wide range of test video,*4 such as footage recorded in a room illuminated only by the light from burning incense sticks (approximately 0.05–0.01 lux) and video of the Geminid meteor shower. The company is looking to such future applications for the new sensor as astronomical and natural observation, support for medical research, and use in surveillance and security equipment. Through the further development of innovative CMOS sensors, Canon aims to expand the world of new imaging expression.
Canon Marketing Japan Inc. will be exhibiting a prototype camera that incorporates the newly developed 35 mm full-frame CMOS sensor and sample footage captured with the camera at SECURITY SHOW 2013 (www.shopbiz.jp/en/ss/), which will be held from Tuesday, March 5, to Friday, March 8, at the Tokyo International Exhibition Center in Tokyo, Japan.
*1 An imaging element (aspect ratio: 16:9) that supports the largest image circle size possible when shooting with a Canon EF lens.

PocketWizard Introduces PlusX Transceiver With Wireless Flash and Camera Triggering Capability
PocketWizard Announces Easy-to-Use PlusX Transceiver for Wireless Flash and Camera Triggering
So. Burlington, VT – March 1, 2013 – LPA Design, manufacturers of PocketWizard Photo Products, the world leader in wireless control of cameras, flash lighting and light meters, today announces the immediate availability of its new PlusX Auto-Sensing Transceiver
The high-quality PocketWizard PlusX is the perfect entry into the PocketWizard Wireless System with the same range and reliability of its renowned Plus line of radios. Whether new to off-camera flash or remote camera triggering, or a seasoned professional looking to expand their PocketWizard wireless triggering system, the PlusX is the perfect choice. And as the user’s technical needs grow, the versatile PlusX will continue to work with any other PocketWizard radios that a photographer adds to their gear box.
The 10 Channel PlusX uses PocketWizard’s patented “Auto-Sensing Transceiver Technology” which means it will automatically switch between transmit and receive as needed. Users just turn it on, connect it to the flash or camera and set the channel using its simple, rotary-dial. The PlusX automatically figures out what it needs to do to trigger remote flashes or cameras. Using the same side-profile design of the PocketWizard Plus III radio, the PlusX has an internal antenna to minimize obstruction and increase durability.
“The new PlusX transceiver adds to the legendary Plus reliability that so many photographers have come to trust on all their photographic assignments,” said Dave Schmidt, Vice President of Marketing at LPA Design, the company that manufacturers PocketWizard Photo Products. “Working on a budget should not mean sacrificing performance or reliability.”
The PlusX is compatible with all PocketWizard transmitters and receivers including PocketWizard-enabled photo gear from Profoto, Dynalite, Norman, Photogenic and Sekonic light meters. The PocketWizard Wireless System allows for total flexibility with whatever lights or cameras a photographer may be working with.
PlusX Features include:
10 Channels
With the PlusX’s 10 digitally coded Standard Channels, users can claim their own channel for exclusive triggering when working with other photographers at crowded events. Photographers can use different channels for different setups and select them simply and intuitively with the turn of a dial. And these 10 channels are compatible with every PocketWizard ever made1 set to Standard Channels 1 – 10. (1radios of the same frequency; in the United States, the PocketWizard PlusX operates on an FCC-approved frequency of 344MHz. In other markets it operates on a CE-approved frequency of 433MHz)
Backlit Channel Dial
Setting channels is as easy as turning a dial. The backlit channel dial clearly displays the channel and because the backlight consumes so little power it stays on all the time for convenience.
Internal Antenna
The PlusX features a durable, side profile design with an unobtrusive, internal antenna minimizing visual obstruction between the photographer and their subject. By utilizing an internal antenna, there’s no chance to kink or break it when on location. The total height of the transceiver and antenna is 4.2 inches, and it weighs less than 4 ounces, including batteries.
Easily Connected / Cable Port
On the user’s camera, the PlusX slides into the hot shoe with no cables required. For remotes, it features one do-it-all miniphone (3.5mm or 1/8”) sync port. The miniphone connector is much more reliable than a PC connection and every PlusX comes complete with a miniphone-to-miniphone cable, a miniphone-to-phono (1/4″ or 6.3mm) adapter for triggering the majority of modern flashes, and a miniphone to locking PC cable for triggering some remote speedlights or for using a PlusX on-camera when the user can’t put it in a hot shoe. Other miniphone connector cables are available for major brands of lighting equipment in a variety of lengths. Dedicated remote camera triggering cables are also available for popular camera systems.
Auto-Sensing Transceiver
With PocketWizard’s patented Auto-Sensing Transceiver technology, the PlusX Transceiver will instantly and intelligently switch between transmitter and receiver modes keeping setup as simple as possible. The PlusX may be set to transmit (Tx) only, when desired.
Auto-Relay Mode
PocketWizard’s Auto-Sensing Transceiver technology lets users trigger a remote camera in sync with remote flashes using only three PocketWizard radios: the one in their hands, a PlusX cabled to a remote camera, and the one connected to a remote flash. The PlusX cabled to a remote camera will receive a radio signal and trigger the camera’s motor drive, then switch to transmit mode and trigger PocketWizard-connected remote flashes, all automatically. The sequence can be started by simply pressing the TEST button of any PocketWizard Transmitter. Remote cameras require remote shutter release cables.
Status Indicator/Battery Life Indicator
The PlusX features a tri-color LED status indicator that serves two functions. When the PlusX sends or receives a triggering signal, the LED will glow red. During normal operation, the indicator will blink a single green blink meaning it is operating normally and the battery life is above 50%. It will blink a double amber blink when the battery is below 50% but above 25% and it will blink three red blinks when the battery life is below 25% and it’s crucial to replace the batteries.
Transmit Only Mode
There are times when a photographer only wants their radio to transmit, usually when two or more photographers are sharing a set of lights. By enabling transmit only mode, users can disable the receive mode and auto relay functions to make sure their radio is just transmitting.
Range and Reliability
PocketWizard Plus radios are known for their range and reliability. Although the PlusX costs less than other PocketWizard radios, users will still get the range and reliability they expect from a PocketWizard product.
Sync Speed
Ultra-fast microprocessors allow for reliable sync speeds of 1/250 seond for focal plane shutters and 1/500 second for leaf shutters.

Rambus ‘Binary Pixel’ Sensor From Rambus With Extended Dynamic Range
Press release:
Rambus Unveils Binary Pixel Technology For Dramatically Improved Image Quality in Mobile Devices
Breakthrough technology Provides Single-Shot High Dynamic Range and Improved Low-Light Sensitivity in a Single Explosure
SUNNYVALE, CALIFORNIA AND BARCELONA, SPAIN – February 25, 2013 – Rambus Inc. (NASDAQ: RMBS), the innovative technology solutions company that brings invention to market, today unveiled breakthrough binary pixel technology that dramatically improves the quality of photos taken from mobile devices. The Rambus Binary Pixel technlogy includes image sensor and image processing architectures with single-shot high dynamic range (HDR) and improved low-light sensitivity for better videos and photos in any lighting condition.
“Today’s compact mainstream sensors are only able to capture a fraction of what the human eye can see,” said Dr. Martin Scott, chief technology officer at Rambus. “Our breakthrough binary pixel technology enables a tremendous performance improvement for compact imagers capable of ultra high-quality photos and videos from mobile devices.”
As improvements are made in resolution and responsiveness, more and more consumers are using the camera functionality on their smart phone as the primary method for taking photos and capturing memories. However, high contrast scenes typical in daily life, such as bright landscapes, sunset portraits, and scenes with both sunlight and shadow, are difficult to capture with today’s compact mobile sensors – the range of bright and dark details in these scenes simply exceeds the limited dynamic range of mainstream CMOS imagers.
This binary pixel technology is optimized at the pixel level to sense light similar to the human eye while maintaining comparable form factor, cost and power of today’s mobile and consumer imagers. The results are professional-quality images and videos from mobile devices that capture the full gamut of details in dark and bright intensities.
Benefits of binary pixel technology:
- Improved image quality optimized at the pixel level
- Single-shot HDR photo and video capture operates at high-speed frame-rates
- Improved signal-to-noise performance in low-light conditions
- Silicon-proven technology for mobile form factors
- Easily integratable into existing SoC architectures
- Compatible with current CMOS image sensor process technology
The Rambus binary pixel has been demonstrated in a proof-of-concept test-chip and the technology is currently available for integration into future mobile and consumer image sensors. For additional information visit www.rambus.com/binarypixel
