The AF Nikkor 28mm f/2.8D is a bargain wide angle fast prime lens. At f/2.8 the AF Nikkor 28mm f/2.8D can shoot low light photographs with great color saturation. At only 205 grams the AF Nikkor 28mm f/2.8D is also one of the lightest of Nikon’s prime wide angle lenses. The widest aperture is f/2.8 but the lens can stop down to f/22 at the narrow end. It has a maximum viewing angle of 74° on the FX format and 53° on the DX format. The lens has a total of 6 lens elements arranged in 6 groups. The diaphragm of the lens comprises of 7 straight blades.

Nikon has provided a multi coated layer to this lens known as Nikon Integrated Coating (NIC). It reduces the flares and ghosting which are common with wide angle lenses.

The AF Nikkor 28mm f/2.8D has a close focusing distance of 0 .85’ only. Both auto-focusing and annual focusing is provided in the lens. However auto-focusing will not work in some of the cheaper DX format cameras. The AF Nikkor 28mm f/2.8D has a filter thread specification of 52mm and has a dimension of 2.6×1.8” (diameter x length). The lens ships with the 52mm front lens cap and a rear lens cap for prevention of dirt and dust.

The sharpness of the lens is something that leaves questions. However this lens is suitable for amateurs looking for a prime light weight wide angle lens at a bargain price.
