This $1000 wide angle – telephoto lens satisfies the needs of an amateur photographer looking for a single lens that gives a great range from wide angle to telephoto. With a 16.7x optical zoom range, the AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR does exactly that. Nikon’s Vibration Reduction II technology provides the much needed optical stabilization. In fact VR II offers up to four stops slower shutter speed than normally would be possible with the camera hand held.

Nikon’s proprietary Silent Wave Motor technology ensures that the lens is super quiet when auto-focusing. Nikon has provided both Super Integrated Coating (SIC), AS (Aspherical Elements) and Extra-low Dispersion elements, to ensure that ghosts, flares and spherical aberrations are suppressed to its maximum. Additionally Internal Focusing (IF) technology means the lens barrel is never extends during focusing. The presence of M/A technology allows the user to switch from auto focusing to manual with simply a turn of the focusing ring without having to flick a switch.

The maximum angle of view (on a DX format DSLR) is 76° while the minimum is 5°20′. A whopping 19 lens elements including 3 ED glass elements and 3 aspherical glass elements make up the lens construction which is arranged in a total of 14 lens groups. 9 diaphragm blades are behind the beautiful bokeh (soft defocusing of the background or foreground). The lens uses 77mm screw-on filter. The dimensions of the lens is 3.3×4.7” (diameter x length). Overall weight of the lens is 830 grams.
