Overview
The AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR lens encompasses many of Nikon’s state of the art optical lens technologies. A 5.5x telephoto lens must have some sort of optical stabilization to ensure that pictures shot while hand holding the camera are at all usable. Nikon has provided Vibration Reduction II technology that provides a possibility to use a shutter speed of up to four stops slower than usual even hand holding the camera. The lens has a maximum aperture of f/4.5 when fully zoomed out and f/5.6 when fully zoomed in. The minimum aperture is f/22 – f/29.
The AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR is designed specifically for the DX format DSLRs. It has a maximum angle of view of 28°50’ and a minimum of 5°20’. The minimum focusing distance of the lens is 4.59’. Nikon’s SWM (Silent Wave Motor) technology ensures that the lens is discreet when focusing with no sound of the focusing motor engaging. In order to compensate from the presence of spherical aberrations Nikon has used HRI elements in the lens. This does the same job as several normal glass elements can do together.
The construction of the lens consists of 17 elements including 2 ED glass elements and 1 HRI element arranged in 11 groups. 9 rounded diaphragm blades ensures that the lens provides beautiful bokeh. The lens takes a filter of size 58mm.Overall the dimensions of the lens are 3.0 x 4.8” (diameter a length). The weight of the lens is 530 grams.
