A fast 35mm prime lens, the AF-S NIKKOR 35mm f/1.4G is a fantastic lens for weddings, events, travel photography, low light and when you want to take architecture shots. The key to the versatility of the lens is its fast aperture and the technology aspects that Nikon has bundled into this lens.
First is the Silent Wave Motor technology which ensures ultra silent focusing. Next is the Nano crystal coating which suppresses the amount of flares and ghosts that is so common with wide angle lenses shooting wide open in day light. The presence of M/A allows for faster precise manual focusing even with auto-focusing engaged. All one needs to do is to turn the lens’ focusing ring to engage manual focusing instantly.
Another technology marvel is the presence of Rear Focusing (RF) elements in the lens. This prevents the lens from extending while focusing. Only the rear lens elements move which means the barrel length never changes during focusing. The presence of Aspherical Elements in the lens means the ghosting and flares are suppressed.
The maximum angle of view on a DX format camera is 44° where as on a FX format DSLR is 63°. There are a total of ten lens elements arranged in 7 groups. The diaphragm is made of 9 blades. The minimum focusing distance of the lens is 0.98 which is pretty close. The lens has filter thread specification of 67mm and the diameter x length specification is 3.27×3.52”.
