What is better than a 500mm f/4? Of course it is a 600mm f/4 if one is interested in the ultimate close-up shots for shy wild subjects then the AF-S NIKKOR 600mm f/4G ED VR is the best Nikkor lens that one can in terms of reach.
This monstrous lens needs a stable optical stabilization and Nikon obliges by putting its second generation Vibration Reduction II technology in it. In simple terms now it is possible to hand-hold the lens mounted on a Nikon DSLR system and use a shutter speed of up to four stops slower, than you would normally be able to do. If you’re into high precision tripod based photography then the lens has a built in sensor that can detect whether you’re using one and immediately disengage the stabilization system.
A handy M/A option allows you to turn the focusing ring without having to flick any switch and achieve better manual focusing precision. Of course a switch for transition between auto to manual (A/M) focusing is also provided.
Other technologies bundled with this $10,000 lens are Silent Wave Motor for keeping things quiet when auto-focusing, Nano Crystal coating with Extra-low dispersion (ED) elements and Super Integrated Coating (SIC) for reduced flares and ghosting when shooting wide open.
The lens has a minimum focusing range of 15.7’ and has a maximum angle of view of 2°40′ on a DX format DSLR. On a FX format DSLR the maximum angle of view is 4°10′. The diaphragm of the lens is made of 9 blades.
