At around $120, the Speedlight SB-400 (Amazon | Adorama | B&H) is an affordable system when you need something more powerful than the pop-up flash of your DSLR. The Speedlight SB-400 offers more power and more coverage than your built-in flash does. The guide number of the Speedlight at ISO 100, 18mm zoom-head position, is 21 m/69’. At ISO 200, 18mm zoom-head position it is 30 m/98.4’.
The Speedlight offers i-TTL (intelligent through-the-lens) flash coverage with compatibility for Creative Lighting System (CLS) for all cameras which come with it. on a DX format the lens coverage is 18mm. on a Nikon F6 the lens coverage is 27mm. the flash head tilt up to 90 ˚ with clicks indicating stops at 0°, 60°, 75°, 90°. Several flash exposure control options have been provided which includes manual, manual flash, red-eye correction, rear curtain sync, FV lock flash, slow-sync, red-eye reduction in slow-sync etc.
Using Ni-MH batteries the Speedlight SB-400 has a recycling time of 2.5 seconds. Again when using Oxyride™ batteries it is 3.5 seconds for the recycling time. Standard Alkaline batteries give a recycling time of 3.9 seconds ad Lithium batteries offers 4.2 seconds.
The Speedlight SB-400 also comes with a flash-ready indicator. It indicts if the power source is drained out, or if the camera system that it is mounted on is incompatible or even if there is insufficient light or the flash itself is overheated. The dimensions of the Speedlight SB-400 are 2.6 x 2.2 x 3.1” and its overall weight is only 128 grams.
