Canon EOS 1DX Mark II Scores 88 in DxOMark

Canon 1DX II DXO score

DxOMark has published their test report on Canon EOS-1D X Mark II. Unlike many other review the result of DxOMark is primarily based on sensor performance. The top position still belongs to Nikon D810 which scores 97. The Canon EOS-1D X Mark II scores 88 with very good low light performance. The Nikon D5 also stands in the same line but its main strength is in high ISO performance.

Canon 1DX II DXO scoreAccording to DxOMark..

“The Canon performs exceptionally well. Not only does it have a wider useful dynamic range at base and low ISOs than the Nikon, it’s not far behind the Sony, and that small difference won’t be noticed in use. The Canon sensor continues to offer a wide dynamic range at every ISO setting, improving on the Sony from ISO800 onwards, and falling only slightly behind the Nikon’s strong performance from ISO6400 onwards. Indeed, the difference at most is around +0.6EV. Canon cameras are known for high ISO noise performance, and the Mark II surpasses both the Nikon and Sony by nearly +0.5EV.”

SanDisk CFast can Corrupt Canon EOS-1D X Mark II Images

CANON EOS-1D X MARK IIIt has been confirmed that when shooting still images with the EOS-1D X Mark II digital SLR camera launched in April 2016 with SanDisk CFast cards, the following phenomenon will occur.

Phenomenon

If a SanDisk CFast card is inserted into the camera or a card reader, the bottom part of still images recorded may be corrupted.
This phenomenon is confirmed in images recorded in both the RAW and JPEG formats.

In the RAW file, the image corruption may appear in the bottom right corner of the image.
In the JPEG file, the image corruption may appear in the lower third area of the image.

Please Note:
Movie recording is not affected by this phenomenon.
Still images or movies recorded to CF cards are not affected by this phenomenon.

Cause

This phenomenon is caused by SanDisk CFast cards. The camera does not cause this phenomenon.

Sandisk CfastAffected Products

SanDisk CFast cards.

Image corruption may be experienced with the cards listed below:
The “xxx” at the end of the product number varies depending on the sales region.
SanDisk Extreme PRO CFast2.0 64GB (SDCFSP-064G-xxx)
SanDisk Extreme PRO CFast2.0 128GB (SDCFSP-128G-xxx)
SanDisk Extreme PRO CFast2.0 64GB (SDCFSP-064G-xxxA)
SanDisk Extreme PRO CFast2.0 128GB (SDCFSP-128G-xxxA)
SanDisk Extreme PRO CFast2.0 64GB (SDCFSP-064G-xxxB)
SanDisk Extreme PRO CFast2.0 128GB (SDCFSP-128G-xxxB)

Market Support

Although it has been confirmed that this phenomenon is caused by SanDisk CFast cards, to prevent the occurrence of this phenomenon, Canon is considering releasing camera firmware on the Web for a download service in early July.
We would like to apologize for the inconvenience, but we would like to ask our customers to refrain from using SanDisk CFast cards when shooting still images until the new camera firmware becomes available.

Workaround

It is our understanding that image files about 16MB or less recorded immediately before the camera’s power is turned off may become corrupted. Below are  the methods available to help avoid image corruption when powering off the camera:

The Camera can be powered off in four ways:

  1. When the power switch is set to OFF
  2. When the card slot cover is opened
  3. When the power is turned off due to the Auto Power Off setting
  4. When the battery is removed

The phenomenon can be prevented by performing the procedure below:

Before powering the camera off, please take extra shots*1 because the extra shots taken immediately before the camera is powered off may experience the corruption and not the images taken before the extra shots were taken.

*1 The table below shows the most popular file types used and how many extra shots are recommended.

File Size (Approx.) How many extra shots do I need to take in order to meet the 16MB or larger requirement?

<JPEG> M1:4.3MB 4
<JPEG> M2:3.4MB 5

Metabones Brings Native AF to EF Mount But there is a Caveat

MetabonesDpreview Warning

“We’ve tried out the new firmware on a Smart Adapter IV paired with a few lenses (Canon 35mm F1.4L II, 70-200 F2.8L II IS, Sigma 24mm, 35mm, and 50mm F1.4 Art) on the Sony a7R II. Phase-detect functionality appears to be limited to a very small central regions, which means lots of hunting if using off-center points, or Lock-on AF and Eye AF (both in AF-C) for non-central subjects. While AF in video is possible, it’s slow with significant hunting. At this point, with these lenses, we find this update largely useless, and found ourselves reverting to the ‘Green’ mode that was default prior to this update for best performance.”

Press Release

Metabones® Adds “Native” AF and Smooth Iris to EF Mount Speed Boosters® and Smart Adapters™ by Firmware

Vancouver, Canada, June 23, 2016:

Metabones® releases Metabones App 2.3, a major firmware update with the following additional features.

  • Eye-AF (A6300/A7 series).
  • Fast contrast detect AF for all E-Mount cameras.
  • DMF (direct manual focus) for E-Mount cameras, where the camera switches to MF as soon as AF completes. This is useful for checking AF accuracy when used with focus peaking.
  • Smooth iris for Sony E-Mount and FZ-Mount cameras and Blackmagic, JVC and Panasonic Micro Four Thirds Mount cameras.

Metabones® has already added fast EF lens autofocus to its Micro Four Thirds Mount Speed Boosters® and Smart Adapters™ last year. With this speedy advantage now extended to E-Mount, EF-Mount lenses are now capable of focusing quickly across the widest variety of mirrorless cameras with trusted Metabones precision and reliability.

The smooth iris feature slows down the movement of the electromagnetic aperture diaphragm so that video footage transitions smoothly when the aperture changes, with reduced tick noise from the lens. The latest Canon and Tamron SP lenses have special support for this feature and Metabones® makes use of it if the lens supports it.

Limitations:

  • E-Mount “native” autofocus features may not work with all lenses.
  • “Native” autofocus may be lesser in performance and/or accuracy compared to the original “Green” mode phase-detect autofocus for A6300, A7 Mark II and A7R Mark II.
  • AF-C and video autofocus may have unsatisfactory AF performance and/or accuracy. This is a limitation inherent in DSLR lenses, which lack the low latency required for making many fine movements in rapid succession during AF-C and video focusing.
  • Excessive hunting may occur if a small aperture is used with AF-C, video or “Liveview Display Setting Effect” turned on.
  • The first few autofocus attempts may result in false positives where the camera gives focus confirmation but the subject is not in focus. This issue goes away on its own after a few trials with most lenses.
  • No support for in-camera correction such as peripheral shading, CA and distortion.
  • Power consumption may increase compared to the original “Green” mode autofocus. We recommend turning off the “Pre-AF” option to conserve battery power. On A7 series cameras and A6300 the option is on page 3 under the “gear” tab.
  • Actuations of the electromagnetic aperture diaphragm and/or the focus motor of the lens result in noises which may be picked up by the camera’s internal microphone during video recording. Use of an appropriately placed external microphone is required for video work.
  • The aperture moves in 1/3 stop steps with most Panasonic cameras and 1/8 stop steps with other cameras, which may be noticeable in video recordings. Programmed exposure mode and shutter priority exposure mode should not be used for video. Lenses supporting “smooth iris” smooth out the transition but do not increase iris resolution.

The following lenses have been tested for “native” AF. Refer to Metabones’ web site for the most up-to-date list. Lenses equipped with smooth iris support are marked with asterisks. APS-C lenses are not compatible with Speed Booster®.

  • Canon EF 8-15mm f/4L USM Fisheye*

Butterfly in Slow-Motion with iPhone

It was early April, the time of butterfly mating. During this time of year they are very active. We know butterflies collect nectar from flower for sugar. But they also need water and minerals. Which they lick from moist soil. I came across a group of butterflies and decided to film them. I dropped my DSLR setup and set the iPhone in Slo-mo mode. iPhone 6 & 6s can record video at 240 frame per second @ 1280 X 720. You need to set it up in Setting >  Photos & Camera > Camera > Record Slo-mo. This feature is very useful to view our world from a different perspective.

iPhone Slo-Mo Setting

One of the key point here is the way you approach towards the butterflies. I moved towards them very slowly, otherwise it was impossible to be capture them from such close proximity (only 7 inch). The mobile was handheld and at ground level. You can see from the image below how close I was.  iPhone 6 has a 8 Megapixel back camera & the lens is 29mm (35mm equivalent) with fixed 2.2 aperture.

Key features

  • 84.5-460mm (35mm Equivalent)
  • Retractable Design & Quick Shift Focus
  • Weather-Resistant Construction

Developed as an interchangeable lens for use with PENTAX K-mount digital SLR cameras, this new compact, weather-resistant telephoto zoom lens provides enhanced autofocus performance and outstanding optical performance.

This zoom lens provides focal lengths between 84.5mm and 460mm (in the 35mm format)* to cover medium- to super-telephoto ranges. Thanks to its upgraded AF performance, it assures quiet, high-speed AF operation in still-image shooting, as well as smooth AF tracking operation during movie recording to minimize operation noise caused by focus and aperture shifts. Its newly designed, high-quality optics provide a minimum focusing distance of 0.95 meters, expanding the range of photographic applications. With the adoption of a retractable structure, it measures a mere 89 millimeters in length, making it easy to carry around. Coupled with its weather-resistant construction, this zoom lens assures outstanding reliability and durability even in demanding shooting conditions.

Main Features

1. High-speed AF operation

With the adoption of a rear-focus system, the focusing lens is 93.6 percent lighter* than the previous version. By driving this focusing lens using a pulse motor (PLM), which is directly linked to a lead screw, this zoom lens operates faster — approximately 8.3 times** at its wide-angle end and approximately 1.7 times** at its telephoto end –and quieter than the existing model.* When mounted on the new PENTAX K-70 digital SLR camera body, it assures smoother, faster AF operation with dimly lit subjects, thanks to an improved AF algorithm that exchanges AF data between the camera body and the lens with greater precision. Operability of its power-assisted focus system during manual-focus operation has also been improved. Since its distance ring is designed to accurately detect the angle of rotation and swiftly react to a change of angle, this zoom lens can shift its focusing lens smoothly in response to distance ring operation.

* When compared with the HD PENTAX-DA 55-300mm F4-5.8ED WR.
** When taking a still image in viewfinder shooting, with the camera’s AF mode set to AF-S and for subjects positioned at a distance between 1.5 meters to infinity.

HD PENTAX-DA 55-300mm F4.5-6.3ED PLM WR RE2. Quiet AF operation and electromagnetic diaphragm control, perfect for movie recording

This is the first K-mount lens to feature an electromagnetic diaphragm control system.* When mounted on the new PENTAX K-70 digital SLR camera body, it assures smooth, high-precision aperture control during movie recording. Thanks to this state-of-the-art system, it shifts the aperture setting automatically and smoothly, even when the brightness level of the subject changes drastically in movie shooting. Coupled with the PLM mechanism, it also assures smooth AF tracking operation and exposure control, while minimizing the intrusion of focus- and aperture-shift noises during movie-recording operation. As the result, it produces more natural, true-to-life movies in locations such as a theater stage or a sunlight-streaked forest where the brightness level fluctuates considerably, and for such active subjects as athletes and animals.

* This lens features a KAF4 lens mount compatible with an electromagnetic diaphragm control system. In order to use this lens, the camera’s firmware must be upgraded to the latest version (except for the PENTAX K-70). Cameras compatible with this system are: K-1, K-3 II, K-S2 and K-S1. If this lens is mounted on a camera without proper firmware upgrade, its diaphragm control mechanism becomes inactive, making it impossible to obtain correct exposure.

3. High-quality images, with a minimum focusing distance of 0.95 meters

With focal lengths from 84.5mm to 460mm (in the 35mm format), this telephoto zoom lens provides approximately 5.5-times zoom coverage from medium- to super-telephoto ranges. Its 14-element, 11-group optics include an ED (Extra-low Dispersion) optical element to effectively minimize spherical and chromatic aberrations, while delivering high-resolution, fine-detailed images with rich contrast from the image’s center to its edges and minimal color bleeding at any focal length setting. In addition to the short minimal focusing distance of 0.95 meters, made possible by the rear-focus system, the lens barrel has also been designed to be free of extension during AF operation, making it ideal for a wide variety of applications, such as outdoor, sports and landscape shooting.

HD PENTAX-DA 55-300mm F4.5-6.3ED PLM WR RE

HD PENTAX-DA 55-300mm F4.5-6.3ED PLM WR RE4. Compact telephoto zoom lens

Thanks to its retractable structure, the lens is only 89 millimeters long. Since it weighs just 442 grams, it is extremely compact and handy to carry even in a limited space, such as a bag, making it ideal for casual, day-to-day shooting.

5. Weather-resistant construction

The lens features a dependable weather-resistant construction with 11 sealing parts to effectively prevent the intrusion of water into the lens interior. When paired with a weather-resistant PENTAX digital SLR camera body, it creates a durable, dependable digital imaging system that performs superbly in demanding shooting settings — even in rain or mist, or in locations prone to water splashing or spray.

6. HD Coating to optimize image description

The lens is treated with high-grade, multi-layer HD Coating.* Compared with conventional multi-layer coatings, this PENTAX-original coating assures higher light transmittance and less reflection to deliver bright, high-contrast images free of flare and ghost images, even under demanding lighting conditions such as backlight.

* HD stands for High Definition.

7. Other features

  1. ・Quick-Shift Focus System allows the user to instantly switch to manual-focus operation, even when the camera’s AF system is in operation.
  2. ・SP (Super Protect) Coating applied to the front surface of the lens to effectively repel water and grease.
  3. ・Rounded diaphragm with nine blades to produce a smooth, beautiful bokeh (defocus) effect, while minimizing the streaking effect of point light sources.
