Overview
Sony has revealed it’s new Cyber-shot RX1R full-frame compact camera without anti-aliasing (AA) filter. Which means, in theory that, you’ll get sharper images than the original RX1, but increased moiré in some situations. All other specs remains the same as older RX1. The RX1R will sell at the same price as the regular RX1, which is $2800. The older model will also be available.
Press Release
The new Cyber-shot RX1R full-frame compact camera is designed to satisfy even the most critical photographer’s desire for sharper, more detailed pictures and enhanced resolution. The model’s ‘R’ suffix denotes a further improvement in the pocket-sized camera’s already spectacular resolution.
In common with many digital cameras, the original Cyber-shot RX1 camera features a multi-segment optical low-pass filter (OLPF) in front of the sensor to suppress unwanted moiré and color artifacts. The enthusiast-oriented RX1R model removes this low-pass filter to realize the full resolution potential of the image sensor and bring new levels of realism to landscapes and other finely-detailed subjects.
Additionally, to take advantage of the OLPF removal, the camera’s processing functions have been optimized to maintain image sharpness without compromising lens/sensor performance.
While weight and dimensions remain the same as the ground-breaking DSC-RX1, the special edition RX1R is also now compatible with TRILUMINOS Color technology, allowing for the ultimate image playback experience on compatible BRAVIA televisions.
Pricing and Availability
The new Cyber-shot RX1R models will be available next month @ $2800.

Features
High-performance lens that offers a field of view similar to that of the human eye, covering a wide range of scene types
The lens has a fixed focal length of 27mm (41mm in 35mm format equivalent), offering a field of view similar to that of the human eye, capturing each scene as precisely and naturally as you see it. It includes a glass moulded aspheric element which reduces image distortion as much as possible. You can explore different ideas dependent on the scene you’re shooting, e.g. using your own footwork to adjust the distance between yourself and your subject, or by changing the shooting angle, enabling you to enjoy a broad range of photography.
Outstanding resolving power for sharp and clear images
The advanced optical design is coupled with FUJINON’s proprietory HT-EBC Coating that brings a large amount of light onto the camera sensor to draw the maximum performance out of the X-Trans sensor, thus achieving outstanding resolving power for sharp and clear images.
High-speed autofocus
The lens incorporates an autofocus design that uses a high-torque coreless DC motor to shift all of the front lens elements (5 elements in 4 groups) to achieve a fast AF speed. The quick AF response is one of the fastest amongst single focal length lenses on APS-sensor mirrorless cameras.
Premium-quality focus ring
The high precision focus ring is made of metal, and requires delicate operation during manual focusing. The materials and the design ensure a comfortable feel and exactly the right amount of torque when rotating the ring.
Bokeh effect for isolating a subject
The use of a seven-blade round diaphragm means your subject is isolated with beautiful bokeh in portraiture with a shallow depth of field, or for close-up photography of stunning dishes or small accessories.
NB: FUJIFILM X-Pro1 and X-E1 Owners
The FUJINON XF27mmF2.8 lens does not feature an aperture ring in order to keep it compact and lightweight. When using this lens, please update your camera body’s firmware to enable aperture adjustment via the camera’s command dial. Download firmware here

Joby Gorillapod Focus and Ballhead X Review
Joby Gorillapod Focus and Ballhead X
The Joby Gorillapod Focus is one of the sturdiest tripods from the Joby yet. Designed for carrying a significant amount of load the Joby Gorillapod Focus is ideal for DSLR camera systems or camcorders that weigh up to 5 kilos. The first thing that you will notice when you unpack the Joby Gorillapod Focus is the sturdy ball joints that are the hallmark of this tripod. The ball joints are tough and are very well made allowing you to twist and turn the legs to any angle you choose to. The greatest advantage of a tripod that allows you to adjust the angle of the legs and or turn them around is the flexibility of shooting angle that you get. This is impossible to attain using any other tripods.
The base plate / camera plate of the Joby Gorillapod Focus comes with a ¼” tripod screw. It allows you to use the tripod straight out of the box without the need for any additional ball head for mounting your DSLR, compact camera or camcorder. There is a 3/8” adapter, should you choose to use that size for your specific needs. Either way, all that you need to do is to place the camera using the camera screw and you’re ready to shoot.
Also provided with the Joby Gorillapod Focus is the Ballhead X, a sturdy design that is compatible with most quick release plates that are available in the market. The Ballhead X is machined out of high quality anodized aluminum and has a smooth finish to it. Grab one of these and it makes mounting your camera system on the Joby Gorillapod Focus that much easier. Additionally the Ballhead X is Arca-Swiss system compatible which means you can use it with your existing or any other tripod that is available in the market.
The detachable camera plate mounted on top of the Ballhead X is not exactly what we can call a lot of convenience. You will need to turn the screw on the side to detach it. Once you have done it the camera plate can then be screwed at the bottom of your camera. Once the camera with the camera plate is mounted back on to the Ballhead X we can move the camera around and see how the panning and the tilting work. There are two screws on the side of the ballhead. The bigger of the two screws allow the ballhead to tilt (with the camera). This is ideal for taking portrait shots. The other screw allows the Ballhead X to pan and take a 360 ˚ perspective of any scene.
You have to consider that, it will not replace your conventional tripod. Use it when you can’t take or use your regular tripod. You have to be very very careful to make it shake free for absolute macro photography, specially with moderately heavy cameras like Canon 5D mark III & lens attached. However, for regular photography this guy is a champ. It can handle most professional camera set up, even with a 70-200 f/2.8 pretty well. A cable or remote release is a must to get best results out of it. So far, this is the only Gorillapod that will hold up a serious camera set up.
Over all the design, the ergonomics, the build quality and of course the price of the Joby Gorillapod Focus & Ballhead X is certainly great. It is a value for money product for any photographer. It is small & convenient enough to fits in any back pack. It will allow you to compose shots from really difficult angles and places where no regular tripod can hold a camera system still.
